An issue with windsurfing has always been the minimum wind force necessary to truly be fun. I could see foiling being great to ride in those areas where thermals are kinda weak, inland, on a lake, for a relaxing speedy day. A lot of people complaining here, but hey I'd take that and exercise while enjoying a beautiful view, over waiting for 5 beauforts getting a sunburn because the weather channel did not have it right. Have not tried it, but sounds interesting to me in that perspective. There definitely is a market for this. Last time I was in Maui, I saw Robby not long after his surgery, calmly go in the water while I was waiting for the wind to go up, without a harness taking off full speed. Made me definitely want to try it. But then, he is Robby and I am a mere mortal.

+DL: I see what you mean BUT :-). I learned and grew up at same time as Naish. We started on long boards and the sport evolved into sinkers and now slalom, bump and jump, allround boards with more volume, Formula, Race, etc. Boards are easy access now but not as technical - another story. Anyway. Plenty fun to be had on a longboard while waiting for the short board planing conditions and, as you say, its all excersise. I'm positive it helps. I'm regularly out on a long board while waiting for stronger conditions. I've been foiling also but its another sport and I don't enjoy it as much. Kite foiling is better but in essence foiling is best left to bigger craft. I chuckle under my breath now because whereas before the young guns in the club were always moaning about not enough wind; now they are still sitting with sodas at the same table, instead of spending time on the water, moaning about which is the best foil for low winds etc....!!!! One was event persuaded that he could go 3x the speed of the wind - right. Bottom line: They are still not out on the water enough. Watersports is a way of life and the best way to live it is to be prepared for the strong winds, take advantage of the longboards - there are some excellent ones out there - and enjoy the water. Ever tried free styling a long board ? OR. You can choose to join "the baggy shorts club" and drink sodas all day complaining about whats not right. Like all sports. If you hang around moaning and waiting for "that perfect day", you'll end up out of shape and helpless when it finally comes. True for Mountain Biking, Windsurfing & Kiting.

I think the key is to have fun on the water AND not to spend a lot of money on new equipment. I got the foil from Hong Kong cheap, modified to fit my regular windsurfing board box, regular tuttle box did not brake yet. Question: did I have fun learning ? ... YES . it is something new.

Is there any video where there is a beginner? Also, is there any video where they say - okay, this is 6kts or this is 10kts, we have a windsurfing board and a foiling board, there are exactly same sails and they compare / show results - both on water, next to each other - speed, maneuvring, etc? It looks cool, but these videos always look cool and easy.... and there's nothing to compare that with.

There are no such of videos because these videos would not look good for the product advertisement. You spend $2000 for the foil + $2000 for the board and still need to find out if there are any benefits of getting attached to water with a 20lbs stick. Frpgear offers a fin foil for $200 and you can see the difference on youtube videos with the foil and without it so you can decide to purchase or not

So what you're saying is that these videos are a JOKE and that JP foils (and others) are far too expensive ? If so, I think you're correct.

In my place "outer Banks, NC, USA" I have seen only one kite foil. Never JP foil while many JP boards. I have seen several FRPgear fin foils. With water depth variation 2-3 feet for miles JP foil would not be very practical. But 14 inch deep FRPgear foil works just fine. I have seen FRPgear foil going faster side by side with a foil kite.

Amazing how all these pro's always say that what they are riding on is the best. Why don't some of them ever turn around against their EMPLOYERS - Yip thats right: The people who pay them are the same pipple who make these appendices, sails and boards (I would NEVER have guessed) - So; why on earth don't we ever hear one of them say "this is a piece of shit". I wonder ? LOL.

Also consider that the riders who market those products are the ones who actually developed them and put a lot of work in. Obviously for them it's the best because they put their best work possible into it. They're also the ones who have to perform well on them in competitions so they better be good products ;-)

+NP: All the more reason for them to promote the sport instead of killing it. Show people how to begin maybe instead of poncing around in skin tight T-shirts trying to make it look as if they were all born with a foil stuck up their arse from the very beginning...

Considering these days' society of sensations awesome action videos are needed to keep the sport in peoples awareness. if we swap them for beginner clips windsurfing will rather loose interest I believe. I think there are plenty of beginner videos available and the point of these clips is to show what is possible on these boards/foils.

I think windsurfer looks ugly when on a foil. In our area these foils are not allowed close to beaches because it has been an injury. What is injury statistics on JP foils? Windsurfing used to be safe until it went 3 feet up above water on a stick.

Strange, so if there is one guy who injures himself on a football field, football is then prohibited on that field? The problem with foiling not price mentioned is that it so darned hard to master.

Is windfoiling less physical than traditional windsurfing like slalom, formula or wave riding ? At least it looks less physical and more a balancing act - but only from looking at foiling. What is the real answer ? Can someone shed some light please ?
@jpaustraliacom
@jpaustraliacom 3 жыл бұрын
Like with every sport, it is not easy before you know how to do it. Once you have the know-how and feeling, freeride foiling is less physical - no chop, smaller sail. "Slalom & Formula" this is performance windsurfing-foiling and you will need to go to your limits nevertheless with big sails and big foils.

@team3383 7 жыл бұрын
Its a shit sport unless you are going from A to B on flat water and a decently constant wind. Gybing is only available to the very fit and overly trained pros. All done for marketing. Horue have a video out where they would like you to beleive that they can jump and land and do acrobatics on their foils. Pity they always cut the landings.... They don't even admit to it when asked why !!!

Team33 I disagree you learn to gybe from very early on it just becomes harder and difficult when you have a large sail (5.7)

As soon as the air catches on the foil all lift is lost so instead of spinning out you just drop back onto the water and regain grip to come back up again

Best advice I got was to work on clew-first waterstarts and clew-first sailing. With non-planing jibes you generally want to shift your feet first and keep the sail powered through the turn, flip after the board's around. For planing jibes you carve, flip the sail, then the feet at the same time or later. From what I remember anyway... been kiting since 2007. Anyway, once I started getting comfortable with how uncomfortable clew-first sailing was, the non-planing jibe just fell into place. Other helpful advice was "bend your knees", and "look under the boom through the turn" (which helped for duck jibes). Good luck!
