Having the correct tools makes all the difference. Those " ice tongs " for the idler roller is the Cats Meow ! Bolts sure live a hard life on those track frames. Thank You for the time and effort to share all this Jeff. Best Wishes to everyone at Anderson Construction. #JeffWins

Sometimes, on those bolts that are broken down in the holes, you can take some pipe, stick it in the hole and then use the stick welder. Put the rod inside the pipe and weld it to the broken off bolt. Then throw a big ass pipe wrench on it. Like anything else, sometimes it works good other times, it doesn't.
@JpaydirtАй бұрын
I'm afraid there rusted bad from all the water I work in, that's a clever idea though, I'm going to try it
@robertquast9684Ай бұрын
The nice thing with welding the bolt to a pipe or a nut if it’s broken flush is it heats the bolts when it cools it helps loosen it

Your Detroit is definitely a 53 series! All 71 series governor’s. are driven off of-the blower. 53’s are driven off the gear train. Along with air box covers, valve cover bolts, etc. They also sound entirely different, but that’s a subject for a different time.

broken bolts in the track tension shield.. have your son drill holes thru some bolts that fit those holes to use as drill guides. several sizes..
@billcovert3473Ай бұрын
The 53's have the screws, the 71's the palm bolt center of valve cover. Just some trivia, they have a distinct sound. I you watch HBO's "The Pacific" you can hear that distinct sound on the landing craft exiting the LST on the invasion of Peleliu. The two strokes got their start as 6-71's they called them Grey Marine" in WW2 landing craft. I think I am close to being right.

Jeff it sucks not being able to see your weld. Check and see if you can find a bi-focal lens’s for your welding helmet, I got one for my helmet and it made a big difference in how I can see my weld. Good luck.
@robertquast9684Ай бұрын
That is a lot of heavy hard work. I am surprised you don’t burn up your yellow work gloves while welding. I always seem to cook my leather gloves
@curtisjenkins1119Ай бұрын
Might help if you apply some heat before you weld next time (propane weed burner) it won't crack your welds as easy. Just my 2 cents.

Is there no recoil spring on a D9 or is it contained within the track tensioner?
@JpaydirtАй бұрын
it's inside, takes 45 tons to compress it and put the center bolt thru, then the fun part is when you put it inside and install the cover then release the tension so it can operate
@jeffbryda5789Ай бұрын
Jeff what all are you replacing on these track frames? You going the whole 9 yards with new tracks, sprockets, etc?
@JpaydirtАй бұрын
yes, I went to Minnesota last year and bought a brand new set of CAT tracks for 15K, bought the rollers a month ago
@lloydgeransky7714Ай бұрын
Do you weld tabs on roller bolts and guard bolts to keep them from coming loose?
@JpaydirtАй бұрын
no, I do weld the guards though so they can't wiggle and loosen the bolts

@mejorgyАй бұрын
Jeff….I know this is a personal question, but how much do you anticipate the rebuild for the track assemblies will cost? I’m thinking 30k. How close or how far off am I?
@JpaydirtАй бұрын
16k for the rollers and 15k for the tracks, then the seals and bearings, bolts, nuts etc.
