Started making an eye ball and shaded it in with alchohol markers, when I took a step back it looked like an island surrounded by water with more land surrounding it. A superimposed treasure map was just the finishing touch it needed. One thing that I like to do is add squares (or a graph I suppose) over the map, with each square representing a day's travel. Helps keep player travel a bit more accurate, and if you're like me you can always break the 'rules' a bit and jump them ahead a day or two if you ever get bored of your players doing nothing but walking for 30 minutes.
