Very nice video. Very informative. I have been using the EM 10 II for 2+ years and I absolutely love it. I have only 3 grudges against it. 1. It doesn't take exposure from the focus point, even when spot metering option is selected. That's very frustrating... sometimes. 2. It doesn't have a mic Jack. 3. The AF can be really struggling at times. I still think that it is an excellent camera and I will keep using it until it dies on me. Thank you very much for your time and effort.

An excellent comparison, Peter - very enjoyable, thank you. One thing worth mentioning, I think, is that on the E-M10 Mark IV, Mark IIIs and Mark III (as well as the E-PL9 and E-PL10) the traditional full version of Live Composite does still remain, accessed the same way as on earlier models, even though they also have the simplified version under the AP position of the mode dial. That’s quite a surprise since most of the other AP mode features replace the traditional versions. Of course, the silent shutter mode makes a very welcome return to the PASM modes on the E-M10 Mark IV and Mark IIIs, plus the E-PL10 - though all three also retain the simplified version in the AP mode for anyone who wants it. These three models have a nice extra ability that only previously appeared on more expensive recent models in the range, starting with the Pen-F - the ability the use flash with silent shutter. In currently-made mirrorless cameras, that’s unique to Olympus (though the discontinued Nikon 1 and Pentax Q cameras could also do it). Top sync speed for silent shutter is only 1/20 on these and the Pen-F, but it can still come in handy (the E-M1 Mark II, Mark III, E-M1X and E-M5 Mark III are better still as they can sync up to 1/50 with silent shutter). All eight Olympus models I mentioned with this feature also allow you to re-enable the AF illuminator and beeper in silent mode if desired. Nice little additions, I find.

I always wonder even if we know that the newer Olympus model takes slightly better photos than Olympus' older model. Most people will be only seeing the final image in realtime and not have the other photo for a comparison. Plus you have the other factors that come into play when shooting that can affect image quality. I don't look at photos that I like and say that was taken with so and so camera and the f stop and shutter speed and lens mm was that I need to know. Great photos have been taken with film cameras for over 100 years + with various brands and very few times did iI need to know what camera snd the setup to enjoy the photos.

I will not upgrade! Its not worth it and in my eyes not a good move. One could argue if an upgrade from E-M10 MkII to a E-M5 MkIII or a E-M1 MkII was a good option. But upgrade from an entry level camera to another entry level type is not the way for me, unless my E-MII brakes down (in which case I will be done for good with Olympus).
@Swaggerlot4 жыл бұрын
I never had a problem with the grip, just the AF. So when I learnt that the Mk IV would probably retain the same AF I bought the E-M5 Mk III. After a month or so now, I love it and find it so much more capable. No problem with the E-M5 grip either, but I don't have large hands.

@NeekonMike4 жыл бұрын
I was choosing my first Olympus camera and initially focused on the small and light E-M10 II. Soon I realized that small can be too small - ECG-3 to the rescue! But... that means carrying dead weight for a combined price higher than a used E-M1. Many probably won't consider the E-M1 as an upgrade to E-M10 II - to me the viewfinder and grip (for less money) make it a no-brainer! Plus one gets PDAF and all the features improved in many firmware updates. If I wanted to spend ~$700 today I'd go for the E-M1 II, but for $239, nothing beats the original E-M1.
@NeekonMike4 жыл бұрын
I just ran into an unexpected limitation where the E-M1 can't match the newer E-M10 II - electronic shutter speed range. While E-M10 II can go to 60 sec, E-M1 can only do 1/8 s (and is also ISO constrained). Still, the E-M1 remains an impressive performer, and a testament to extensive firmware updates - first released without e-shutter, silent shooting was added later...

It depends if you need the new features. If you see that those are something that you do not need then do not upgrade.
@davebellamy48674 жыл бұрын
The mk4 top looks a lot like the mk iii. I really like the black finish of the mark ii that is smooth and not rough like the mk iii and presumably iv and the EM5s. It just looks gorgeous. I like the fact that they upgraded it to 20Mpuxel atlas last but I wouldn't replace my ii with a iii or iv. The old menus were a bit annoying but once you know where it is, it's OK. I also like the crappy resolution 640x480 video option which allows for recording of huge amounts of video on a reasonably priced memory card an gives a 4x3 ratio. How does the mark iv compare to the latest or earlier EM5s? I haven't got the budget but if I had, I might go for it.

Good video Peter I have the metal body M1 and thinking about an upgrade, what I want is better AF performance the Sony A6100/6600 Intelligent Eye-AF tracking - I use the Lumix Leica 25mm F1.4, better low light performance - ideally what I get at ISO800 to be available at ISO 1600, up-to-date EVF, not to bothered about going above 16MP, menu/mode wise I would like to set a minimum shutter speed and manual aperture and let the camera control the ISO for correct exposure, let grab you a coffee...I use the small focus point all the time...

Always like your good arguments Pro & Contra in this comparisons between the older/newer model. For me personally I will decide in next year whether to change my 5 MK II to Mk III. At our holidays in (hot!) Italy I noticed: the OMD 1 MK III ist very good but if I could carry around a lighter/smaller version (inclusiv lens) it would be nicer. And the newer one of 5 has 20 MP/Pro cature + ca. 50 gram less weight. So age beats and thats a great PRO for MFT!

Having said that, I use a GX80 for certain features, like panoramic stitching and auto-panning that the MkII does not provide, and I have unother full frame camera which has remarkable tracking autofocus. However, whatever the merits of the full frame [and there are many], I still prefer M4/3 to use in most situations and the E-M10MkII is my overall favourite, if not most used of all. As it happens, I have used the MkII today and only that camera.

Peter, I have two requests for features in a future firmware upgrade for the E-M10 Mark IV which perhaps, as an Olympus Visionary, you are able to highlight to Olympus? For the first time I can remember in any Olympus, if I configure the magnify function to a customisable button, it does NOT work in playback mode as well - only shooting mode. I've always found magnify on a button to be very handy in lower-cost Olympus models, as it can be a really quick way of "punching in" to a high, memorised magnification on a taken shot to double-check focus. Obviously the dial works (but requires quite a number of clicks as it always starts as the lowest magnification) and the touchscreen works, but hitting a button just twice is best for me and I simply can't do this with the Mark IV (even the Mark IIIs can still do it). It would be so nice to be able to use it instinctively the same way as my other Olympus cameras. The other thing is compatibility with the wonderful and tiny FL-LM3 tilt and swivel flash (available separately and supplied with the E-M5 Mark III and several others). The E-M10 Mark IV looks like it is compatible with this useful flash, as it has the extra contact in the hot shoe which normally indicates compatibility (I believe the power from the camera is sent to this flash through it). However, the E-M10 Mark IV does not recognise the FL-LM3, as it receives no power from the camera. I have checked two Mark IV camera bodies and tried two fully working FL-LM3 units with both and neither is recognised on either camera (but larger Olympus dedicated flashes with their own batteries DO work fully), so I am confident that it is not an individual fault (perhaps you can also try a Mark IV and FL-LM3 together?). The E-M10 Mark II, Mark III and Mark IIIs all work with the FL-LM3 flash - only the E-M10 Mark IV doesn't. So it would be great - as long as it is not an internal hardware difference and thus not possible to change - if a future firmware upgrade could re-enable compatibility with the FL-LM3.

I enjoyed this video as I do all your videos. One big reason for me that I would hesitate to upgrade from my E-M10 Mk I is the ECG-1 grip on my first generation E-M10. Even with this grip, I find the camera a bit too small (my only complaint). Will the Mk IV offer any such grip that you know of? Of all my FT and MFT cameras (!) the one with the perfect size and shape for my hands is the E-510.

Price-wise right now I don't find the IV is a good price. Where I am the price for the 10 IV + kit lens is 999 (USD equiv.). The E-M5 III body only is just a little more. Plus, the real killer is the price of the 10 II + kit lens, just 333 on sale now. If I were looking for such a camera the 10 II is a compelling option.

In the UK, the Mk IV is about 3 times the price of the Mk II at the moment. Either the Mk II is outstanding value for money, or the Mk IV is significantly over-priced....... and no sign of the typical selling price dropping (in the UK) yet, nearly 3 months on from launch
@ditto19588 ай бұрын
The whole “upgrade now!” thing with digital gear is seriously kind of a big scam. The sensor/processor combo is analogous to the film and processing in analog days. In the past, although film manufacturers did regularly introduce new films, huge game changer developments were pretty rare, and often decades apart. Many photographers kept to the same film forever, even when newer ones became available. They also tended to buy bodies and lenses and use them forever. You have to give the sales and marketing people a lot of credit I guess. Standing at arm’s length, it’s actually kind of impressive that they can get people to think they “need” to upgrade their Mark II to a Mark IV. While the latter does improve a bit on time former, looking at the big picture it’s a pretty trivial difference. Both the Mark II and IV are in many ways better than my E-300 from 2005. But guess what? I could drag the E-300 out right now and take pictures that, unless you pixel peep, look just as good as anything today’s cameras can produce. Bottom line? Buy what you want. It’s good to live in a world with so many choices.

One thing I’d like to mention (because I couldn’t work out how to comment on your blog page - my fault, I’m sure!) is that contrary to your hopes, the Mark IIIs retains the previous version of panorama mode (for assembly in software) - it doesn’t have the Mark IV’s in-camera sweep panorama feature. Otherwise it’s a great improvement on the original Mark III, at least for me, due to the extra features.

The EM10 Mark II was an upgrade to the Mark III. It has more features and a fine metal build. There is IMHO, not a significant difference to upgrade either camera. For a significant difference you move up in sensor size -- I would say Nikon, at this time, though some may argue Fujifilm which does have some fine lenses. Olympus does have fine lenses, and I will be keeping my gear, but come time to expand the gear once again, I will be moving on. Will also keep my Panasonic. These are all nice little street shooters - travel about snappers, and definitely look sharp. The MFT gear all looks sharp. If Olympus/JIP wanted to do something for a quick attention grabber, then make the PEN Fb model and sell it for $699 body - use the EM10 mark IV specs. The PL-8 is a great looking camera, and I got it with a lens for $349 and I think the final sales dropped to $249 or $279-something like that. The new plastic version is worth $499 at best, with a lens. Really, I think they've hit the wall. -Loren

I bought my MKII earlier this year for £279 brand new, so definitely won’t be upgrading anytime soon. Personally I can’t see enough reasons to outlay twice the price for very little difference. Yes there is 4 megapixels more, but in the real world that will hardly be that noticeable. You’d really have to pixel peep to see the difference. The only real improvement I can see is the grip. The MKII is definitely not the most ergonomically designed, and is unbalanced. But I bought the ECG-3 handgrip attachment and that made all the difference. It makes the camera slightly larger but it isn’t really an issue. It’s certainly better balanced with it in sits better in your hand. At only £60 it’s a lot cheaper option than upgrading. Personally I can’t see there being sufficient improvements to upgrade. If you are a first time buyer, then it is more logical to go for the newest option.

That is a good price.

The MARK IV is surely a better camera than the MARK II. But what keeps my from buying for the moment is the lack of the "Mysets" settings that I am using now in my MARK II. I am doubting about what to do? I hope Olympus will change this later in an upgrade?
@ForsgardPeter4 жыл бұрын
That is a big issue and not really why they have left Mysets and Custom settings out from E-M10 MKIII and E-M10 MIV out.

Economically, is the new camera worth twice as much as the old ? Not so sure. Yes in absolute term, there's technological progress between models (*cough*mkIII), but the price increase is stiff, all the more when the mk II is currently still sold and heavily discounted. Plus, I have a fondness for the mk II design which is the closest to the original OM-1 lines. If I were on the market for 20 Mpix and fast AF, I'd eye the E-M1 mk II which would bring customization and PDAF too for not that much more. Let's face it, the 10 mk II was an overpriced 599 $/€/£ camera when new, which has become a bargain now (kits prices circa 450 € with lens currently), and at 699 the 10 mk IV is simply out of touch with market reality. 17% inflation in 5 years is way above buying power increase during the same period.

Of course, I understand features and image quality but sorry : mk2 has got a metal cover, mk3 and mk4 plastic.

That could be a thing. I have had no problems with the material so far.

@@ForsgardPeter But I don't understand why Olympus uses this material. I know, the material doesn't create photos :). I don't understand because IV & III it's newer and should be better than older. The weight, in this case, it's not so big.

Well, I had the MkII and I have the MkIV - and I miss all the customizations available in the MkII (also the smaller AF point). I understand the aim of Olympus to make this "entry level" camera easier for beginners. But there could be a perfect solution to meet all needs: two different software versions, e.g. a beginner (B) and a enthusiast (E). The camera could be delivered with the B version, enthusiasts could install the E version. The E version would allow all the settings and customizations the beginner would be confused of. Yes, then two version lines had to be maintained - but so what, it is only the features that care about handling and usage. The core funtions would be still the same. I also do not see any conflict with E-M5, which has better AF, faster shutter speed, weather sealing,... Performance more and more is determined by software, that`s why mobile phones are so successful. Why not offering new possibilities with classic cameras?

Good idea and your idea is just the way camera manufacturers should think.

How crippled is the exposure bracketing of EM1Oiv compared to EM10ii ? I couldn't understand what you said about that. On my OM1Oii I shoot a lot of landscapes and architecture using 5 frames exposure bracketing in 1/3 stop increments. If I'm using my very strong Heliopan linear polarizer then I use +2/3 stop exposure compensation. If Olympus has crippled the exposure bracketing, then I won't upgrade. I'm getting really angry with Olympus removing-downgrading features in M10x and M5x cameras. Olympus will not sell me any more bodies if they continue sticking it to the consumer. Panasonic is somewhat better in this regard, but not great. I'm missing Canon and Nikon prosumer cameras (Rebels and 5xxxx) because Canon and Nikon treat consumers better in this regard. Probably Fuji too. Maybe Sony? I'm feeling very abused by Olympus because it seems like they have no loyalty to their customers. Panasonic is better, but not great. This makes me regret being an M43 user and I regret that I trusted Olympus enough to invest well over $5000 USD in their gear over last several years.
@ForsgardPeter4 жыл бұрын
It has less option. How big is the problem has more to do with what your are photographing. If you are happy with E-M10 MKII i would not upgrade.
