Hey guys. Now i own both of these lenses... The body i use it with is EM-5 Mk III so here is my experience. Both lenses have about same level of sharpness and allow about same detail, both are water and dustproof. Olympus 12-40 F2,8 PRO + is faster + bokeh is softer + allows to use Pro Capture + MF clutch - slightly front heavy on EM5 Mk III Panasonic Leica DG 12-60 F2.8-4.0 + Has 5x zoom + On M5 Mk III feels almost perfectly balanced + Autofocus is perfectly silent, and zoom is much more quieter - this might be interesting for video +- slightly more visible vignetting at 12mm +- 9 aperture blades, but has "onion ring" highlights +- Focal lenght above 50mm allows for softer bokeh even with F4.0. This also allows better compression - F2.8 goes down really fast when zooming in. on 25mm its F3.5. - If you carry your lenses with reverse mounted lens hood, this one is quite impractical as it blocks zoom ring Now... why to purchase both of these lenses... I already had Olympus 12-40mm for 5 years and it is my primary lens. The zoom range is very versatile, and allows to use it for almost any purpose. Bokeh isnt the smoothest, but for portraiture its sufficient. Initially i was looking only for a backup lens - in case 12-40 will need a repair. I could go for another 12-40 but, later i realized that i dont own any travel lens which would also (at least partially) cover for my Lumix G X 35-100. So Olympus 12-45 Pro and Lumix 12-35 were both out of consideration. In most situations i would prefer to carry my main camera bag with Olympus 12-40 F2.8 and Lumix G X 35-100 F2.8. This, including flash and spare batteries weights only 2kg. But in case i would be more limited, Leica 12-60 allows me to use smaller camera bag - one body, one lens, small flash at

I own both with my G9. With the M.Zuiko, I loose zooming range and lens IS, but I gain image sharpness and constant aperture. So I would say : it depends on what you're gonna shoot. Handheld and moving operator: Leica. Tripod and/or video: M.Zuiko.

Don't forget that Panasonic/LUMIX offers two 12-60mm lenses. My G85 came with the non-Leica, "half-price" version -- 12-60mm f3.5-5.6 -- which has served me very well for photography and especially video.

Ha-ha, you two are great! Thanks for an entertaining comparison. Just so you know, my wife shoots Olympus and I shoot Lumix and we use the lenses from both brands interchangeably. (primes and zooms) That's part of the beauty of micro four thirds. :-)

I tried both lenses and decided to the 12-60mm. Optical there is not really a lot of difference, but I like Dual IS at Lumix and the 20mm at the upper end.

Great video. I shoot mostly Olympus but have owned Panasonic cameras from time to time. Currently, I have the E-M1 mk II, Pen F and Panasonic GX9 (which is mostly used with the old 20mm F1.7). I like them all, but will refrain from offering a biased opinion towards either because I’m far more familiar with how Olympus does things. I own the 12-40 but would certainly enjoy the little extra reach of the Panasonic.

That was fun video, pleasant to watch and instructive between 2 really kind friends! Few years ago, Panasonic was more centric for video and Olympus was the way to go for photography. But now both, the Lumix G9 and Olympus EM1 mark II can do very well in both fields. Funny fact is since Panasonic is more coming from the video side, their "Pro" lens are with variable aperture. The 12-35mm f2.8 or the 35-100mm f2.8 are not Panasonic "Pro" lens, more plastic feel. I just shoot this weekend a wedding with the 12-60mm f2.8-4 but I really wish I had the Olympus 12-40mm f2.8. That one stop is huge when taking photo in a room. The maximum shutter speed I could get at 60mm was 1/60 sec. If I had Olympus 12-40mm f2.8, I could had the shutter speed at 125 to freeze people while dancing. For video, the Olympus makes more sense as well. In my opinion, the extra reach you get from the 12-60mm f2.8-4 makes it a better street photography lens. But how does the 12-40mm f2.8 performs on Panasonic body with DfD focus technology? How does the 12-60mm performs on the EM1 mark II to acquire focus and film? How do theses lenses perform using Olympus lenses on Panasonic body using C-AF? How do theses lens perform using Panasonic/Leica lenses on Olympus body using C-AF? Any difference in colors or any focus hunting issues or photo/video degradation while mixing lenses from different manufacturers? How is the weather sealing performs while interchanging lenses from manufacturer? Overall, both are wonderful lens, hopefully they are fully compatible. Thank you so much for sharing this video!

Pluses and minuses. Every system, every body, every lens... It's all about compromises. At times the constant f/2.8 aperture trumps the extra 20mm at the long end. And at times the extra 20mm at the long end trumps the constant aperture. For things like weddings and indoor events where light is a scarce resource, faster aperture is a real plus.

Those images are from 2006. Close ups of kittens ears. Printed on a glossy paper with Epson printer and mounted on a aluminium frame. It was done by a printing studio.

I have a G9, I use for video and stills, I understand the Oly is sharper and on a gimbal, you can't really use the IBIS. So, would that mean the win goes to 12-60? Because of the IBIS for handheld stills? I'm not really bias, maybe towards the money side of it. as the Oly is less money, not a lot, about as much as the difference is between the 40mm-60mm I suppose, your assistance on this question would be helpful. Want the 12-40mm but bought the 12-35 Pana before it was released. Then I bought the 12-60 as gives more range and becomes ideal for travel. And then Oly brought out the 12-100...… But the 12-60 Pana-Leica is a great lens on my EM1 MkII

The weakest point of the m4/3 compatibility is that Olympus is not supporting Panasonic aperture ring and Panasonic is not supporting MF clutch. If they can extend it even with Dual IS support on different bodies and lenses combination it will be more than awesome! Otherwise, both are great lenses and Panasonic series of 2.8-4 lenses is very interested, very compact and with high quality. Especially the wide angle is very good because you can mount filters in front of it, this is something we are missing in Olympus line-up now.

I bought my 12-40 separately when it first came out for the constant aperture. I didn’t like the recent new cameras from Olympus and went Panasonic but kept the Olympus lenses. I don’t use the 12-40 much in quite a while and basically live with the prime 25mm 1.8 on the G9.

To the funny part, why I bougt Metabones Speedbooster for Nikon F to m43. I have loads of Nikkor lenses, and one of them are the Mitakon 85/1.2. It's as sharp wide open as Canon 85/1.2, and used with Speedbooster, it will give a angel of view as a 60/0.85. It will blow your mind. If it's pitch black, and you cannot see anything, but with that stuff you can take a portrait photo ... and se the person.

I have a E-M1 mark ii and I have both lens. For video I prefer the Panasonic for few reasons: -Parfocal -Zoom ring -60mm -weight feels more balanced I don't mind shooting f4 bc I'm using lights. If I wanted fast performance I have a lot of fast primes T1 / f1.4 The Oly is a nice lens but for video I give it to the Panny Leica

Great Video Sir, as always! I have a question please guide me which lense should I buy for my OMD EM1 ii; Olpympus 75mm f1.8, Sigma 56 f1.4, or Olympus 40-150 f2.8? All of those lenses are great for portraits. I all comes down to what other uses you might have with the lens. The 75mm f1.8 is one of my favorite lens for portraits, but if you need more versatile lens I would consider the 40-150mm f2.8 lens.

Of course the best portrait lenses will be the 1.2 primes. The 75mm is a great lens but really only suits head and shoulders unless you want to get well back from your subject. The other 1.8 prime lenses still do good job and I feel sharp enough and cheap enough to get both the 25mm and the 45mm and there is even a trend now to do environmental portrait shots with the 17mm focal length (35 equivalence).The 45mm is a real gem for its size and probably the one I use the most for portrait but then I found I was using the 25mm the other day to capture a bit more of the background. The 40-150 Pro is great as a portrait travel lens, but you often are tempted to over zoom in. I guess its a dilemma deciding what lenses to buy and most of us end up buying quite a few lenses over the years, and I am happy to report that I use nearly all. I would really like to get the 1.2 Pro, but really expensive and I cannot decide whether to get the 25mm or the 45mm as I really need both focal lengths. For the moment I am keeping my wallet in my pocket

I am struggling to understand IBIS (camera?) and OIS (lens?). I have E-M1 ii and Lumix 12-60. Should I leave both on or switch the lens off? A video to explain why would be great. Usually when using lenses from other brands turn the stabilizer off from the lens.

I have the GH5 with the Olympus M Zuiko 12 - 40 mm f2.8 Pro. But I have problems focusing with the 12mm focal length. I can get a sharp focus at 12mm when the subject is close to the lens ~ 1 ft or .5 - 1.0 meters but when I get more distant like 7 ft I cannot get a sharp focus at 12mm. The focus wants to be all the way to infinity but it is not sharp whether I focus closer or not - even if I line up the red focus line in the middle of the infinity symbol. However if I focus at infinity and zoom in just a little to 14mm everything is very sharp. I cannot figure out what the problem is. I have the GH5 set on Movie mode and manual focus. The firmware in GH5 and Olympus is up to date. Why would I not be able to get sharp focus at around 7 ft at 12mm but get sharp focus closer or with zoom out to 14mm? I have tried focusing with the focus ring slide back (linear focus like your said) and toward me (wire focus) but nothing is sharp at 12mm at a distance. Close up is fine. When I increase the f stop at 12mm it gets a bit sharper than 2.8 - 3.2 but not really sharp. I would really appreciate any help with this. It is driving me crazy and I have spent hours and hours watching videos and experimenting to try to figure this out.

That is strange. Have you a possibility to test it with an Olympus camera? There might be some calibration problems. That is the only thing I can come up with.

If both of you are in front of the camera who is shooting the video? Some things of mild interest are which lens has more uncorrected curvilinear distortion and also color fringing. Plus if you fit the Panasonic lens on the Olympus body do you see a slow down in stills rapid burst rate?

Most of our videos are done solo, but sometimes we help each other to film. On this one we used a cold camera, so no one was helping us film.

It's always nice to have choices. Not so long ago the question was whether four-thirds would survive as a system. I believe it has survived, albeit in the form of mft + FT lenses + adapters like the MMF-3 - which I use. So, nowadays even more choices. For me, it comes down (pretty much) to whether you use a Panasonic or an Oly body to start with. I have an Oly body, thus the 12-40 f2.8 is my choice. But I own both Panasonic and Pana-Leica lenses also have others, like Sigma. The video here (for which many thanks guys) is nice to watch but ultimately inconclusive for me - this is not a knock on the evident hard work put in. If this idea of brand-comparison videos is going to continue, I'll put in the suggestion that a comparison of both lenses here with the Oly 12-60 SWD would be interesting. The 12-60 SWD is not mft of course and it's relatively larger, but it's still a good lens and by no means obsolete as an option for many (like me). Id even say the Oly 50-200 SWD/non-SWD can - more or less - go head to head with competing mft options but that's a different story. A video comparing the 3 as purchase options would truly be 'visionary' - Cheers

You could turn off the stabilizer from the body and only use the stabilizer in the lens.

We all know the Lumix is better haha. Seriously though I "only" use the Lumix version of this lens and it performs as well as I need it to. Its mostly used for situations where I often need more depth of field anyway so the faster aperture isn't really an issue although the better focus for video might be helpful :)

I absolutely agree, I like this lens very much! I prefer the longer reach over the faster aperture because eithe F2,8 or F4 is not really fast, either. If I really need fast, I go for a prime lens, but the versatility of the 12-100 is hard to beat!!

Thanks for this and other videos made with Matti Sulanto comparing Panasonic gear with that of Olympus. I started the M43 trail 10 years ago with the Panasonic GF1, Sold my Nikon D3 and lenses about 6 years ago and now use an E-M1 ii for Stills Photography and GH-5 mainly for Video. Along the way I have collected a good selection of the best lenses for both systems. So here’s the request (or opportunity or challenge)!! I still don’t have a comprehesive picture of what happens to image stabilisation when you use certain Panasonic glass on Olympus bodies and vice versa. There is so much conflicting advice on the web. As you and Matti offer a balanced view on the two systems how about making a definitive guide to cover this issue?

Just got a super good deal on a G85 with a 12-60(not the leica). Have an Em5 II with 12-40 right now and thinking of selling the olympus just to save money, more than anything. Not sure if I should keep the 12-40 or try to sell that and go for the leica to pair with the G85 :/ For an amateur like me, I'm thinking i'll not really notice the difference :P

I'm deciding between those exact two setups (g85 with 12-60 non leica vs Em5 II with the 12-40 pro). Would you mind sharing your thoughts on the two and how they compare? The Olympus set can be bought for 799 GBP at the moment, which is a great deal which won't last long I think

In MFT land, there are no cameras without IBIS. I think both lenses are great in their own way. And the best of all: Lumix users can chose Olympus lenses and vice versa - it can't get better, or can it? ;-) What you both forgot to mention: Both lenses are weather sealed (the Olympus one might be a bit better in this regard, but I guess it doesn't matter that much in practice).

Every lens with MFT mount is ok with any Olympus with MFT mount. There are no specific lenses to a specific Olympus body.

I've never broken a lens in my life... until owning the Lumix 12-60. I shoot a lot of fast documentary video work, and the plastic mount of the Lumix is a significant liability. A strong bump or unfortunate fall can break it right off. Same thing happened to a friend. The Oly is constructed much better.

This is the Leica 12-60 f2.8-4 and has an all metal mount and as such is very well built however there is also a cheeper 12-60 Lumix kit lens and that is the one I assume you're talking about as they aren't the same price or quality, the Leica kit version has a far superior build quality (perhaps the video could have explained that Panasonic have two different quality "kit lens" available) hope this helps 👍

Fun video I liked it. Question the Lumix lens had built in stably function. If you use it on the Olympus EM1MARK2 body can you also use the lenes stabilization as well to add to the built in body?

No, you cannot. If you have the 12-60mm lens, I suggest that you turn off the stabilizer in the body and use only the stabilizer in the lens.
