We hope that you will enjoy this week’s At Home with the JPO, featuring Barber’s Adagio for Strings, performed by the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of the Dutch conductor, Arjan Tien. The performance was recorded in August 2004 at the Linder Auditorium.
Barber's Adagio for Strings is one of the most recognisable pieces of classical music in the world. It has become America's semi-official music for mourning, used at Franklin Delano Roosevelt's funeral and after JFK's assassination… but somewhere along the way, it went from an anthem of sadness to one of great joy!
