JPO | Happy Birthday Tchaikovsky! | 1812 Overture | Cond. Michael Hankinson

This week we celebrate Tchaikovsky’s birthday, born on 7 May 1840. The JPO’s performance of the 1812 Overture was recorded at the Linder Auditorium in October 2003, under the baton of Michael Hankinson.
The 1812 Overture went on to become one of Tchaikovsky’s most popular works, yet Tchaikovsky himself was dismissive about the piece, written to commemorate Napoleon’s retreat from Moscow. Although he did not understand the popularity of it, Tchaikovsky could scarcely fail to notice that it was a work that audiences craved. It remains a crowd-puller worldwide, almost 140 years since its first performance!
