I am a sucker for Damascus and I love how you take shots at different patterns in the steel. It was one of my things was to learn how to do this but I was a computer/network engineer now retired. Recently had what is called an “internal amputation” of my right leg due to a failed hip replacement that became infected. So while I continue to recover lying here I love these videos. Great job young man. Keep experimenting!

Knife came out looking fantastic. The centerline of the feather damascus being off center, just look at real feathers, they're almost never centered. This just looks more authentic. The centerline of the feather damascus running to the tip, *chef's kiss* perfection.

Been on a habbit of listening to commentaries or stories with yt on background & work or do chores or play game, so in my opinion you talking while working or explainin the process helps a lot for me as well as for people who wannt try it themselves

I feel that by doing the commentary it helps people understand what and why i do it. Its a little scuffed because its unscripted but i like the feel of a conversation vs a monotone explanation if that makes sense.

You should try crushed W's for your feather stack, before splitting, I think the feather looks better IMO. I also used a splitting wedge for my feather Damascus, and spraying it with WD-40, helps with releasing the piece from the wedge for me, also the duller the wedge, the more layer drag you achieve. The sharper it is the more cutting you actually do. Nice work!

There are recipes for a lube to dip your splitting blade in to help with the sticking. It's usually some type of oil and powder graphite
@JPsBladeworks
@JPsBladeworks 2 ай бұрын
I had some i rigged up when i did an axe for the Viking challenge a while up that i looked for mid cut and that helped out a bit. I believe it was from some graphite type lube i found at harbor freight and some dawn dish soap i mixed together. I made it last minute from a video i found and it works pretty decent.

The handle is absolutely stunning, and goes so well with the darkness of the blade! I think the blade stands out, almost like tiger stripes. Love it. When you saw Ws or Cs, what are you referring to? Thanks.
@JPsBladeworks
@JPsBladeworks 2 ай бұрын
Im referrering to turning the billet 90 degrees when im forging it and resquaring it. That causes the lines to bend into a c shape. When you cut and stack it to increase the layer count the Cs fuse and become Ws. It adds more complexity to the pattern instead of just the straight lines.

All blade Smith hate hand sanding. Thank good this isn't the stone ages and orbital Sanders work really nicely. That's what is use. Hand sanding makes your hands very rough and my wife hated it so she got me a hand orbital sander and it cuts my sanding time down to 45 mins.
@JPsBladeworks

Denis Tyrell came out with a sanding machine that cuts down on time and really saves the hands. When he came out with it I didnt have the funds for it but now im starting to consider it because it is one of those things that is essential but also really kills my arms and fingers. I like to work smart not hard but working smart and hard is way better.

That looks BEAUTIFUL!!! WOW! I've never seen this feather pattern before, and I LOVE IT!! I ESPEICALLY love those thick lines, and how they contrast with the bunch of thin lines. I think you said that thios feather pattern typically doesn't have those thick lines, so it would be just a whole bunch of the thin lines, huh? I imagine that some of the thin lines would merge together in spots, like we see happening in between s couple of the thick lines.... that would probably look cool, but I think I would end up liking this more. And that handle looks fantastic too! When you said something about adding some "W's" or "C's" you mean in the straight lines on either side of the point right? What do you think about doing a W pattern in the THIN lines but not those thick lines?
@JPsBladeworks

Just a note, all wood dust is nasty stuff. It can be super fine and sharp, and is super abrasive - not a nice thing to breath in in large quantities. Why cut ot just to weld it back the same way?

your knife making skills on a scale of 1 to 100 are 99 x♾ +11 but your asinine math commentary really kinda ruins the whole thing in the end . like " Wow , a really great video RUINED by " 2+2 =22 ,followed by 2+2 = the square root of my dogs age in human years. a dolt makes a FABULOUS looking knife !!!! very impressive . ☮
