I am a sucker for Damascus and I love how you take shots at different patterns in the steel. It was one of my things was to learn how to do this but I was a computer/network engineer now retired. Recently had what is called an “internal amputation” of my right leg due to a failed hip replacement that became infected. So while I continue to recover lying here I love these videos. Great job young man. Keep experimenting!

You should try crushed W's for your feather stack, before splitting, I think the feather looks better IMO. I also used a splitting wedge for my feather Damascus, and spraying it with WD-40, helps with releasing the piece from the wedge for me, also the duller the wedge, the more layer drag you achieve. The sharper it is the more cutting you actually do. Nice work!

There are recipes for a lube to dip your splitting blade in to help with the sticking. It's usually some type of oil and powder graphite
@JPsBladeworks2 ай бұрын
I had some i rigged up when i did an axe for the Viking challenge a while up that i looked for mid cut and that helped out a bit. I believe it was from some graphite type lube i found at harbor freight and some dawn dish soap i mixed together. I made it last minute from a video i found and it works pretty decent.

The handle is absolutely stunning, and goes so well with the darkness of the blade! I think the blade stands out, almost like tiger stripes. Love it. When you saw Ws or Cs, what are you referring to? Thanks.
@JPsBladeworks2 ай бұрын
Im referrering to turning the billet 90 degrees when im forging it and resquaring it. That causes the lines to bend into a c shape. When you cut and stack it to increase the layer count the Cs fuse and become Ws. It adds more complexity to the pattern instead of just the straight lines.

We do what we can as long as you are having fun. I'm not one to look down on people who do things different ways because I know I can get just a good a knife or even better just stock removal vs forging and I know there are many people out there who can do things I cant.

All blade Smith hate hand sanding. Thank good this isn't the stone ages and orbital Sanders work really nicely. That's what is use. Hand sanding makes your hands very rough and my wife hated it so she got me a hand orbital sander and it cuts my sanding time down to 45 mins.
@JPsBladeworks2 ай бұрын
Denis Tyrell came out with a sanding machine that cuts down on time and really saves the hands. When he came out with it I didnt have the funds for it but now im starting to consider it because it is one of those things that is essential but also really kills my arms and fingers. I like to work smart not hard but working smart and hard is way better.

That looks BEAUTIFUL!!! WOW! I've never seen this feather pattern before, and I LOVE IT!! I ESPEICALLY love those thick lines, and how they contrast with the bunch of thin lines. I think you said that thios feather pattern typically doesn't have those thick lines, so it would be just a whole bunch of the thin lines, huh? I imagine that some of the thin lines would merge together in spots, like we see happening in between s couple of the thick lines.... that would probably look cool, but I think I would end up liking this more. And that handle looks fantastic too! When you said something about adding some "W's" or "C's" you mean in the straight lines on either side of the point right? What do you think about doing a W pattern in the THIN lines but not those thick lines?
@JPsBladeworks2 ай бұрын
I think it would look better with the Ws because it would give it more movement and more contrast. Ive seen many like this and i like the look.

When cutting the billet to achieve the feather pattern, might it help to use a lubricant? Torbjörn Åhman uses a graphite-molybdenum-soap mix, I think, that he uses for hot punching and similar operations. Have a look at his video. It might help with the wedge sticking
@zacharykelly74342 ай бұрын
@stormdrifter7904 I was thinking the same thing. I vaguely recall Alec Steele I think mentioning using beeswax in one of his og hammer forging videos

Just a note, all wood dust is nasty stuff. It can be super fine and sharp, and is super abrasive - not a nice thing to breath in in large quantities.
