The gate stuff is cool but only works when the snare is consistent in volume and style. If it is sidestick combo etc I split the track and use 2 different instances.

in theory, it should work for bringing out specific frequencies in just about anything... just a matter of finding the right frequency that you want to accentuate in each tom.
