I`ve always respected her. I`m not a racing fan but channel surf and watch sometimes. She is a driver not a racer by her own admissions. Saw her get tangled up in a wreck and got shoved straight into a wall in the infield. 5 minutes later she`s talking to a commentator. She showed balls. She really hit the wall hard.

I pulled ambulance duty at a lot of stock car races, and the drivers are so adrenalized that they pop out the window after smacking into the wall and don't feel a twinge. Until maybe 2 hours later, after all that adrenaline has worn off.

I wonder how many of the people on here criticising her as a driver are even into motorsports, yeah she was no all time great but she was decent enough to keep a ride and qualify mid field most races, all the people calling her a horrible driver couldn't come close to driving as well as her. Do you realize the talent it takes to race in IndyCars and NASCAR, if it was so easy considering the love she got from sponsers, race teams would be hiring women left and right to drive. She did win a race in IndyCar and she never struggled to qualify I either series, that puts her ahead of at least a third of the field right there, even if she never got a win in NASCAR. Look I get it, she got sponsorship deals that other drivers of hee same talent level probably would not have because of her being a women and attractive but it does not make her a awful driver. Just lucky and using what she has going for her to get sponsors something any other driver in her shoes would have done.

After all, lighter means less fuel consumption and less energy to accelerate. - My thought was: "Lose weight big guy." 2. I am still seeing top 10 finishes (at least some in her career). As far as not earning her position, if she races and qualifies for the race and is able to finish the race.. Then she is competing. Sure, her gender does captivate sponsors and i am sure got people taking a second glance at nascar but.. what does that have to do with her not earning her race position ( i assume being a driver). I don't really know that much about the racing community and i assume there's "well, the guy she beat out the job for is a better racer but b/c her $ on her being a women is more marketable, she won the job." I guess you could make that argument for any job, "yes bob is a better candidate then jill... but Bob is a dick." Plus jill is good looking.. HIRED! WHoooooooo welcome to murica!

If women were made for racing we'd have found out by now, they do not have the natural aggression of men, the courage of men or the split second timing of men they are far more indecisive than men on average and at 200 mph that matters.....the total points for women in F1 is the almost laughably impossible sum of....half a point. They need to stop blaming men for the fact of being born female. 20.000 years of warfare, hunting and sport explains why men and women are different..

This is the truth right here. It's not the fact that she is a women it's the fact that she was a sup-par racer that got promoted above others because she is a women who was willing to use her looks to advance her career. Yes sex sells and many teams need company's sponsorship to get by but considering that racing is a sport many of a the fans want to see the best of the best out there competing. Go Daddy wanted Danica as their spokes person and so would back her with huge amounts of money so that some teams just couldn't say no to signing her. What a lot of people have to understand is that happens all the time in elite sports all around the world. Some athletes excel at a sport and are promoted because of their talents and some athletes are promoted because of backers that want to see them competing at the highest level. When a sport is so lucrative that money out weights the competition this will always happen. The greatest example is in F1. There are drivers in that championship who are backed by millionaires, multi-national companies and even countries governments. They don't have the skill level and talent of other drivers but because they can bring millions of dollars to a team they are signed. There are also talented drivers that probably should be driving in F1 but for what ever reason they can't get the backing to get them into a team. It sucks and in my mind detracts from the competition but when money is King it will always happen.

Danica's biggest mistake was moving from Indy to Nascar. She was pretty good (far better than average) in Indy however her greed and ego led her to Nascar where she really faltered and sullied her reputation. I think the public would have a completely different opinion of Danica had she stayed in Indycar where, given the right equipment, she had the ability to be competitive. After all, she spent her entire career racing open wheel and had the most experience in that category. Nascar is a totally different beast and requires a different skill set from a driving pov.

@MikeTXBC

There actually is a fair amount of physicality in a race car. Those cars don't have all the amenities (such as power steering or AC) that normal cars do. So you really have to turn the wheel hard, the seats aren't particularly comfortable, and by the time you're done you'll a complete ball of sweat. There's a reason drivers often need help getting out of their cars after they've finished numerous laps. Is it as physical as football or basketball or soccer? No, it's not, but it's also not as easy or simple as driving a normal everyday vehicle.

It's just not that simple. Drafting open wheel cars at over 200 MPH is extremely dangerous and very hard to do. Anyone who demonstrated the skill and bravery to compete and win in Indy cars is in a very exclusive club. At that level of competition, winning or not winning comes down to very small differences in your car, your set up, and timing your moves.
