He was so humble. Julia Roberts told a story about how she was excited to meet him at the Golden Globes and waved at him from her table. He didn’t wave back. She ran into him later and asked why he didn’t wave back, and he was so apologetic. He didn’t believe that a star like her would wave at him, genuinely didn’t believe that she was waving at HIM, so he didn’t want to embarrass himself by waving back.

It's interesting how they are talking in this clip how James wasn't like Tony, a bit of a hippy, educated, music lover. So if Tony the Family man and Tony the mob boss weren't close to James, I imagine Tony in therapy was close to his real character. In therapy Tony was thoughtful, observant and self doubting. I remember one scene where he just proclaims, 'Who cares, I'm just some fat crook from Jersey.' Demeaning himself, he's a powerful mob boss, but views himself as nothing. While not as self deprecating, clearly James was this massive figure, big guy, intimidating and a huge star, but he was super humble, didn't think of himself highly. It's an interesting dichotomy, perhaps one Chase took note of.

Michael Imperioli nails it here when he mentions cinematic quality. Every episode of the Sopranos felt like a movie, not a television show. There were 86 episodes and it was as if it was an 86-part movie series.

Yep. I also think he humbles himself next to Gandolfini when he also did an amazing job of growing into and building his character. I didn't like him when I first started watching the show but he does an amazing job alongside Gandolfini. "We-we're with the Vipers!!" LMAO

My aunt went to HS with Mr. Gandolfini. Apparently they were good friends in highschool too. When she got a bit older she would host a breast cancer gala every year. Gandolfini never missed the gala and donated every year for 15 years. Prayers to him and his family he was a great man and actor.

Later on? He was always portrayed as a drug addict, well into the 2nd season. You can arguethat he was one since season 1, when he was in the hospital scene laying down in bed, just constantly pushing for the drip type of pain medicine. Than you had his drug addict friend Brandon, showing us that he's exactly who he hangs out with.

I decided to go get it a couple weeks ago, and I see they have "grab bags" now, where it's a bag you can't see through that you'll pay $10 for, and get like 7-8 dvd's(they likely need to clear out shelf space from items that aren't selling) I know for a fact it's in one of those bags...... The greatest TV series of all time. I love Breaking Bad, Entourage, Game of Thrones, The Wire and many more, but for me... nothing comes close to The Sopranos. I do agree that Soprano's was the greatest and opened the doors to a new era of television which is still chasing elements of the series to this day. Don't get me wrong, it's a good show, I enjoyed it, but it's filled with over exaggerated cliches, like the cartels, the twins, unrealistic scenarios, the characters don't even speak real Spanish and in general it feels more caricaturesque while The Sopranos makes you feel you're watching real human beings.

The way the character development was so good, the most minimalist characters could even have their own plot and they sometimes did. The time Chris and Tony robbed wine from a truck, for example. Chris was battling an addiction but was still there for the ride. The pizza Anthony left. The neighbors. Gosh there were too many things to list.

As great as Gandolfini was, a lot of credit is owed to these two guys as well. Michael Imperioli is a really clever dude and absolutely smashed it as Christopher; top 3 best performances on the show, in my opinion. And Steve Schirripa more than held his own in a couple of crucial scenes with Gandolfini, especially in the later seasons. Best cast ensemble ever on a show.

I think Gandolfinis ability to to show Tony's menacing nature and his vulnerability with such equal mastery was one of the main things that made him so appealing, at least to me. Hes The Man, respected and feared by some bad dudes. But at the same time, his charming little smile, his displays of affection, even his temper tantrums are child like and innocent in a way. Such a great character and James Gandolfini portrayed him in such an amazing dimensional way.

And the writing was fucking incredible too. Some of those one liners by Junior, Paulie and Sil had me howling. Imperioli crushed it as the drug addict heir apparent. Not to mention the women who weren't just beautiful stand-ins but strong and passionate with great presence and feel for their roles. Just one of the greatest television of all time!

Almost every interview his co-stars say Jim was their mentor, their leader….his generosity as far as helping people out financially and in work of acting left a huge imprint on those people. RIP Jim and Tony. The Best.

I cried when I heard Gandolfini passed. My wife asked me why and if I knew him, but I didn’t. I met him one time at the Bob Hope USO at LAX when I was there to see my son off to his duty station. Gandolfini had popped in to say hello. I spoke with James for maybe 3-4 minutes and he made me feel like we had known each other for a long time. An absolute genuine and friendly guy. I’ve never became emotional or cried over a celebrity passing, but James Gandolfini was an exception.

I love the sopranos but "OZ" was the first of one of those shows to be fair. But Sopranos was the most famous of the 90s HBO shows. Gandolfini was the best on camera and off. R.I.P James Gandolfini

What I loved about the Soprano's, is that Tony had a normal side as a Dad like all of us putting up with the shit of teenagers and that sometimes nagging wife and his everyday home life. Best show of all time in my opinion.

Exactly it’s very humbling to kno u see a big strong, money-making gangster who at the same time is dealing with regular family bs that even cripples him at times ( anxiety) and seeing how the most insignificant things like family relationships with his kids, wife, mother and sister just affect him . You know if the ppl he killed and messed with where flies on his walls they would be so happy to see how unhappy and depressed he is they’ll be like karma is a bitch, huh? That’s why he didn’t want anybody to kno that he was seeing a shrink. He didn’t want to ever be perceived as weak cuz then it cut off his money train but his family knew the real Tony and knew how to get under his skin. His shrink at the end kicked him out of her practice for being a sociopathic narcissist and seeing he’ll never change but how could he if his family always belittled him ??? It’s like Paulie ain’t nobody really cared about him when he wanted to vent ppl would shut him up and go away. Same with his family. He’s mom, sister, kids and wife never appreciated him for the love he gave (which he did).

I had the pleasure of briefly meeting Steve & Michael at a Tradeshow in Philadelphia back in the early 2000's. They were signing autographs & getting pictures taken with attendees at the old Adam's Mark Hotel off route 1. It's so cool looking back on that now while watching this Joe Rogan clip. At the time I knew The Sopranos was big. Now in 2021 I know for sure that it's EPIC. These are some good dudes, and yes Gandalfini will be forever missed.

I watched Sopranos over the course of 2 weeks like two months ago. I didn’t even know James had passed away til i saw this. He absolutely murdered this role. He did amazing and portrayed a complex and extremely flawed character that is a critique of many things. Like Chris’ actor said “great actor, great part. “
