After watching documentaries on Tyson, looks like Cus gave him a purpose. He was a nobody and believed he's always be a nobody, then someone took him in and told him he could be great. When he died, the ego set in and he got lost in it. I think he's always wanted to be a good guy, but everyone else's expectations of him, plus all the times he was fucked over turned him into someone he wasn't. Amazing to see his perspective about everything now.

And that's exactly what Mike means about how destructive ego can be. People delude themselves and lie to themselves and project some ideal of how they should be or should act so much that it becomes a detriment to their minds and lives. Ego and confidence doesn't do anything. Effort and competence do things. I appreciate Mike's honesty. He exposes the psyche behind this modern day issue we have with insecurities. There's nothing wrong with being scared. It's useful to be scared, it's a biological survival mechanism. But once you lie to yourself and suppress the truth of how you feel, then your mindset starts to go.

Nowdays, I feel shame for how much I enjoyed seeing and cheering Mike Tyson's fights in the 80s.... i couldn't imagine then, the price he would have to pay for that.

Defintiely not Cus hated government and stuff like that, you should read iron ambition it gives a better insight to who cus was. I think mike said in the book Cus was always at a state of a war in his mind he thought people were always after him. Cus was a fighter and also ex military and his family were very tough and experience a lot of racism for being italian immigrants. You should check out the book

METalGod66 true. He (Cus) grew up around a lot of mobster/gangsters. Shit, his gym was across the street from the “ Murder Inc” crime family spot! That alone, probably brought along a warrior/paranoia like mentality...

Mike Tyson vs Roy Jones in the late 90"s would've been epic.

That is an impressivily ignorant comment. Roy Jones got up to Light heavywieght. Mike Tyson was a unlimited super heavyweight. Do you think Roy Jones has a death wish?

One of the main reasons ppl like us try to shut it off and get away from this because it consumes you and you don’t like the person you are when you have a daughter it’s differently you don’t want her to see that side of you. Once you activate that mindset and tap in your fucked because the more addicting it gets the more it consumes you and you can’t shut it off so only choice you have is to adapt and fit in and know how to blend in society

Haha, Mike Tyson, amazing. Sounds like the biggest teddy bear out there but at the same time could kill most of us in the comments with punch or 2. amazing man. put himself through a lot. had a varied lifestyle, from poor, to rich and famous, to drug addictions jail, to a normal life. Mike Tyson was a weapon. still is. id say hes gotta couple good punches left in him that's for sure
