Anyone interested in the GH5, but is worried about the lack of great continuous AF, please know that there is a super awesome hack to make the AF twice as good. All it takes is a simple setting change (shutter speed) and it does wonders. There are several videos out there explaining exactly what to do. Check out Yeowda Yeo's video first as he was the genius that figured it out in the first place. Not an engineer at Panasonic. Hopefully Panasonic recognizes him for his discovery, but until then, give the dude props and credit well deserved.

The Panasonic gh series are also great for real estate photography. A friend of mine uses it for his real estate business. He shooted with other camera's but always got back to the gh series. Whole pictures are sharp not only parts. Even the GH 3 is great.

The videos at the end doesn't seem so bad at low light. Some light noise removal in Premiere, FCPX, etc can fix this too, wouldn't be perfect but it's also not a big deal. All other complaints can be updated in future firmware updates.

Leaving aside the fact of being masters or inept in using manual focus, the technology is so consolidated and tested with amazing results in an endless number of cameras. In this case, what I can think of is a not perfect process of product development and testing. In my opinion, after years of shooting videos in all conditions, there are situations I prefer to focus manually and others in which I prefer the camera do the job. In this case I have to care of one less thing and pay attention to the scene. But there is a good video by Gerald Undone that gives a lot of information on the AF and how to get better results from the GH5.

I found this to be a great and forthright review. I currently use the GH4 and despite the fact it is a great camera, I have problems with the way it handles continuous AF. I am planning to buy the GH5 and was hoping the AF performance on that was better, but based on reviews from people like Max, Photo.Joseph and many others, I think the AF problems are still there. Like you, I am hoping it can be fixed with a firmware upgrade.

Wait for their new camera that they had covered at NAB. Looks like a S35 sensor in an AF100 type body. I want to get a gh5 but with my clients they are the type to question what I bring to shoot which sucks. I brought my Arri Amira to shoot a marvel commercial( just a talking head of agent Hill) and they questioned that. Same thing happened on an HBO 24/7 boxing shoot.

Just like the old days with still shooters and Hasselblad. Idiots that didn't know photography would insist on seeing a Hasselblad- like the camera did all the work. It reminds me of an old joke. A photographer is showing his work to a friend who proclaims, "Wow! These are great pictures! You must have a great camera!" A week later the photographer is having dinner at said friend's house. Upon leaving, he exclaims, "That was an amazing dinner. You must have a terrific oven!"

In documentary film shoot situations where the subject is constantly on the move and beyond the scope of manual focus because of the time factor, autofocus inevitably gains importance for even the pro. Other exemplary features of a camera cannot replace the essential requirement of good effective autofocusing.

Things that stood out for me most: There were scenes, particularly of the toddler on the playground where the camera was simply never in focus. I'm assuming auto focus was used there, but it never focused on any part of the scene. The image stablisation caused moving objects to ghost in and out of existence. A bird ran into the scene, turned, and instead of running away, just faded into nothingness (10:55). Also multiple times between 11:00 and 11:30, traffic moving along the road jolted from spot to spot, more like watching a time lapse than a video. Granted this was not the focus of the scene, but if you're shooting wildlife and background items are appearing and disappearing, teleporting from one location to the next.. not a good look.

Hi, another beginner-learner's question. Should I purchase white and middle-grey cards in order to aid setting white balance before shooting? How does manual WB work on the GH5? Also, is it worth also getting a black card, as well as the white and middle-grey, and why? Anything else worth considering?

Supermandan yes a set of white balance cards are useful. Again, not familiar with avid, but most editors have a option to just click on the white color and set the balance in post. You can also use the cards to set custom white balances (up to 4 custom white balances) in addition to your pre-set ones. I personally don’t use white balance cards too much unless I’m shooting with a multi cam set up.

Hi there, a few more questions. 1. I'm hearing that the GH5 has V-log-L, or something like. Please explain. 2. What is a LUT? When to use it in conjunction with v-log? Etc., etc.. I have no idea. 3. I have Avid MC and so would be running the footage through this. Every online tutorial seems to reference Premier Pro. Do I need to take anything into consideration? Is colour grading still a standard operation using MC's colour grading tools? 4. How to convert IRE to another system, say, F-stops (I don't know if correct phrasing of question)? 5. Supermandan np! I’ll do my best. 1. V-log is a dull picture profile that requires luts and color grading in your editing program. It cost 99 bucks in addition to the GH5. 2. A lut is a “look up table” it basically makes your footage look a certain way or a type of “style”. You use the lut to make your V-Log footage as desired. I think of luts almost like a filter in a sense. It gives your footage a unique look defined by the “look up table”. I have never used the avid editing program. I use Final Cut Pro. Lots of people have lived premiere for years!!! But now, look around, everyone is switching back to fcpx, it’s a one time 299 fee, but at least you don’t need to pay a monthly subscription like premiere. 4. I need to refresh myself on IRE... 5. DSLRShooter has a guide on the GH5, I think he may charge for it but probably worth his time.

Supermandan lut don’t come with the v-log, but you can literally make your own a variety of ways. OR you can buy lut “packs” that include several luts made by other people who usually sell them for rather cheap. I normal lut pack can be 5-20 bucks.. I’m going to look into Avid! Never knew that was the standard! Maybe I should be using that! Ha!

Yes. Even here it is clearly visible hunting, and micro-hunting of continuous video AF. Is it a deal breaker? Hmm, as Griffin Hammond, a Panasonic ambassador, recommends just forget about Continuous AF, switch it off, and you will be a 100% happy user of the GH5.

If you use one of your own custom settings, and yet in the moment you need to change one variable, then: a) can you do this?, and b) when you later return to that one custom setting, will it revert to all of your original choices? In other words, is there flexibility in the moment, while later stability to always return to something you have pre-arranged?

Supermandan good question. You can move to one of your pre-set custom settings. Once there it will be set to what you set it at prior. You can adjust anything you want freely. When you got out of that custom setting and back in, it will go back to the original settings you have it set to. So yes, you have flexibility in the moment, while later when you go back it will be your original settings. Hope that made sense

Do you like the a6500? I'm going to grab a GH5, but I also want to grab a Sony camera with a bigger sensor and better low light performance. I'm trying to decide if the extra money for the a7sii is worth it. I know the a6500 takes better stills, but it has more/smaller pixels so it's not quite as much of a low light beast as the a7sii. Have you had over heating problems or problems with battery life? I really like the images from the a6500 for the price. Both the video and the stills are beautiful. I'm trying to talk myself out of going with the a7sii. I don't really want to spend that much money on a second camera. Have you enjoyed using your a6500?

Breaking Elegance I know the a7rii is really killer for stills. I'm not much of a stills shooter though. Don't get me wrong, I like shooting stills, but it's just a hobby for me. Video is my bread and butter. I prefer the video features of the s line. To me it seems like the a6500 is the best of both worlds for less money though. I've been trying to find people who own it to get their opinion on it. I'm definitely leaning that way. I could afford the a7sii, but if I save the money I could get some nice glass instead. If I talk to a few a6500 owners who like it I'll be convinced.

I know the low light of the GH5 is garbage compared to the Sony- but I can't have any lights on the camera which means I need to have it placed before anyone arrives..so non stop recording for at least 1.2 hours. Hey great review! I was just wondering if you wouldn't mind sharing your Premiere Pro Export settings. Your video shows almost no obvious compression. I've been struggling for a while now with mine. My footage always looks way worse when uploaded to KZbin and shows tons of artifacts/distortion. I've tried every setting possible and no changes. I do h264 and I've tried everything from 12mbps to 50mbps with no change. Thanks for the future help!

Awesome video! When you are filming can you click an object on the screen to make it focus there? I film hunting outdoors with a ton of moving, hand held clips, and usually the animal is moving a ton. Would this be a good camera for that?

Zach Herold thanks! Yes you can tap on the screen where you want it to focus. You can even control it via the app and tap on your phone to set focus. However, the GH5 is not known for the best auto focus. So if the animal starts to move closer or further, it’s hit or miss when it comes to focus.

Hi, another question (I'm relatively new and yet brimming with questions). I want to do a 24hr landscape time lapse. Several points. One, there are power and storage issues. Any suggestions? Two, if I put the camera in auto ISO mode, I take it the camera will make the appropriate adjustments throughout the session? Three, what's your view on polarising filters? Four, anything else to consider?

I’ll do my best! 1- you can do things to minimize power use, like turning off the back of the led screen while doing the time-lapse. Or, they also sell “dummy” batteries for about 20 bucks that you can connect to like a USB power battery or directly to AC wall plug in. 2. Auto ISO will work, but I would suggest Aperture priority (basically works the same way but will keep your focus area the same) Also, you probably want to use manual focus, so that way the camera doesn’t mistake something else for trying to be in focus. 3. Polarizers... I have some, don’t really use them. I do use ND filters for sunny days when shooting video or need a longer shutter speed. What will you be time-lapsing?

Supermandan you have some good questions!!! V-log is not a option while taking photos and to tell the truth, I’m not sure why.. I think the similar option would be to shoot “raw”. V-log is a extra 100 bucks, not included with the GH5. I only use v-log when there is a lot of dynamic range (dark darks and light lights)

what settings did you use for your photos? I've searched around for what people are using for photo settings and all i can find is everyone talking about is being able to pull from the 6k.. which is 18mp.. how do you access the 20mp? cause i thought your images were good!

Ok looks like you've had this a few months now. It seems like a great entry level 4K camera without buying a cinema camera BUT those of us with Canon lenses want to know if we need to buy another pile of lenses or use some sort of metabones adapter etc. Also how do find the post flow. Do you transcode everything prior to editing?
