The Panasonic GH5 has gotten a lot of attention among enthusiast filmmakers in the last couple of months. After three years of heavy use, it was time for me to replace my GH4. I’ve been shooting with the GH5 now for about a month and these are my thoughts on who this camera is for, and who it may not suit as well.

Curtis, you mentioned that if you want to get a "creamy background" you need a bigger sensor but forgot to mention that you can use the SpeedBooster Ultra and XL on GH5 for an incredibly shallow DOF. Furthermore, currently the Speedbooster and MFT works beautifully with AF and Stabilization on EF Lenses. I was holding my Canon 85mm F 1.2L handheld on my GH5 with XL speed booster and was blown away by the image and stability!!! It's simply incredible! GH5 is hands down the best camera for the buck on the market at the present time! Thank you for the review!

Good point. I need to have a look at the newer speedbooster. I had the original m4/3rds to Nikon version and found it to be a little soft. That was fine if I wanted that look, but not always what I was after. I'd love to see what you can get with the 85 f/1.2!

I use the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 with the Metabones XL on the GH4, and the image quality is superb with nice bokeh. The only problem is the clicking sound of the servo motor while auto-focusing, which is audible even with an external mic, which makes the lens unusable for videos.

Hi magnus547, thanks! Over the years, I've used whatever I could scratch together. Currently I'm using the GH5 and Ursa Mini Pro. I have a couple of native m4/3 lenses (12-35, 45mm) and for the Ursa, I'm using older Nikon lenses with manual aperture rings (105 f/1.8, 50 f/1.8, 20 f/2.8, 80-200 f/2.8). I'm a bit of a sound junkie so on the sound side I use one of the following, depending on the job: Sound Devices 633, Zoom F8, Zoom F4 with F-Control, and a variety of microphones. My two favorite are the Audio Technica AT4053b for indoors and the DPA 4017B for outdoors.

Thanks for your perspective Curtis! I notice it in your shots too, but I'm having a lot of jello when using the sensor stabilization,, which makes a lot of sense too. It's the same kind of distortion the warp stabilizer would create. What's your thought on that?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 жыл бұрын
I think a gimbal is still a necessity when moving the camera. I'm planning to keep that Zhiyun Crane (if I can get it back from my friend who's had it for the last 6 weeks). Where I think the IBIS can work without a gimbal is when standing stationary and carefully moving the camera. When walking, even the excellent stabilization has a hard time compensating for that much movement.

Hey Origins Garage it would seem that the bearing in the gimbal handle is what separates a reasonable quality stabiliser from the others (ie Glidecam). If you don't mind me asking how does the bearing on the Yelangu seem? And the overall build quality? For 80 bucks I'm thinking about taking the risk too! Appreciate any feedback you might have...

Nice professional, calm tone. Appreciated. I just got the G85. Some similarities. I solved the vlogging auto focus challenge by 1, using Tracking. Works perfectly if you are not pointing the camera at other things. Secondly, a higher quality lens like the 7-14mm auto focuses perfectly and fast.

Hey Curtis. Good thoughts/info. Couple of things. What's the minimum ISO for vlog? Is it 400 same as gh4? And your comment about M43 not allowing blurred out background. I'm sure you didn't mean that quite how it sounded. And I'm that sure you know you can match full frame DOF/FOV and image noise once you have done the full equivalence properly. (Adjusting focal length/aperture/ISO) But, If you are not aware of how to match That "Full frame look" Maybe have a look at a video I put together. Titled- "Depth of field and crop sensor misconceptions" It's a bit long winded. But I go into the science of what's going on inside the lens/camera. And exactly how to get the exact same FF look on m43. I hope it helps.

@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 жыл бұрын
+CZsWorld if shooting above ISO 1600 or 3200 is something you do regularly, there are better options. My Sony a6000 and Nikon D750 both do a little better than the GH4 at 3200 ISO. That being said, I have found that it is rare for me to shoot above 3200 for my work. If I need something super low key, I keep it at ISO 1600 in most cases and then apply a touch of de-noising in post.

Great overview, your audio quality is top-notch. Do the 1st generation 12-35 f/2.8 lens work well in 4k video recording mode? Panasonic's page advertises the 2nd generation as "designed for 4k video", so I'm not sure if the 1st gen is good for that. Thanks!
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks TechLineHD! Yes, most of the shots aside from the talking head clips were shot with the 1st generation 12-35. The second generation version of the lens evidently has a continuous aperture. I haven't used the new one yet to see how it compares.
@TechLineHD
@TechLineHD 7 жыл бұрын
thank you for your answer! Currently, I use 14-140 Kit lens on my Panasonic G7. Do you think that upgrading to the 1st generation 12-35 lens will make a difference in 4k video quality?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 жыл бұрын
It will certainly give you wider apertures to work with which gives you more options. It won't have nearly the telephoto reach. I haven't used the 14-140 but the 12-35 definitely seems like a step up from most other kit lenses I've used. Good and sharp, no color issues that I've noticed, distortion is well controlled. It is definitely a core lens in my kit.

@3:06 What do you have as a 'mount / carrying kit' for your GH4 (and is there something similar for the GH5)? What I found with mine 'in the field' was there was no way to hold it easily while walking around (fine when shooting); but something like the top handle you have could really help.

Hi Aramis, thanks! I must confess that I don't have any lenses in that range. My "long" lens is a 45mm prime which I use for talking head shots and when I want a little reach. However, if I were looking for a lens in that range, I'd look at the Panasonic 14-140 on the more budget end and on the higher budget end, I'd look at the 35-100: 14-140: amzn.to/2qqlj2B 35-100: amzn.to/2qPc0Ks Yes, this is Utah, up in the mountains near Park City. Good luck!

Thank you for a very informative overview. I have a GH5 on order (due end of July) and have been shooting with a GH4 for the last year. I have just sold my Canon XF305 as weight and bulk was becoming an issue for me. One very important point you haven't mentioned, is the micro 4/3 cameras (and DSLRs) are not permit cameras, you can shoot in most public places and will not be stopped by some "jobs worth" bureaucrat. I got tired of being stopped from filming on several occasions when using my Canon or Sony EX3. With adapters I can also use all my Nikon lenses on the GH4, these are great for manual focus work.

Great informative video. EXCELLENT POINT about the V Log delivery. I hope Panasonic does take that into consideration. One thing to consider is that there is no way to Deactivate the V log code. While you're going through the install process on the Panasonic site, the purchased V Log code gets registered to the exact cameras serial number. If you have an defect with the camera and you have to return it, with the intention to get a replacement unit, you have to go through the whole process of getting a new code shipped to you again for the new unit. That's a bit of a pain, not to mention not very eco friendly to be shipping a box with a code written on a piece of paper. Please Panasonic, if you're listening, reconsider this delivery method.

Thank you Curtis, I've learned a lot from your content over the years, keep up all the great work! About the V Log process, I've watched dozens upon dozens of reviews of the GH5, and I feel like you're the only person who has brought this point up. I've owned several different brands of cameras in my time and I've never experienced any process like this. The installation of V Log became my biggest first impression criticism about getting started with the GH5 ecosystem. Ultimately it was a very click bate awkward user experience. It's a minor criticism though. Besides that, I love the GH5.

I agree with not being able to deactivate V-Log L. I had that issue with my GH4. It had it sitting on my tripod one day, it fell when the wind blew it over and it cracked the mount and front of the camera and my insurance would only cover the camera if I returned it to them and was given the money it would cost to get a new GH4, so I lost my V-Log L and would have liked the option to deactivate it first so I could have reused it on my GH5, but had to get another V-Log L for it.

Hey Curtis, I like your videos a lot. I recently got a gh5 and I'm having trouble with the audio. It seems that at -12 it still peaks a lot in moderately loud environments. It's not that big of a deal but I'd like to occasionally have decent scratch audio. Did you run into this problem?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 6 жыл бұрын
Hi datalaforge, Yes, the GH cameras (not just the 5 but also the 4 and the 5s and probably those before) have rather hot preamplifiers so it is hard to record anything that is loud. The limiter works pretty well but it would be nice if there was a wider range at the bottom end. If I need to record loud things, I'll usually put a VideoMic Pro on there with the gain on it set to -10dB

Thanks! Yes, I'm enjoying the Tri-8C quite a lot, more than I expected. I've been using the 120T a little more lately for the blue backdrop look to add some color contrast to the talking head clips. So I use the 120t as a key and the 120d or Tri-8C set to 6800K to create the blue cast (since the camera is white balanced to the tungsten colored key).

About -16 LUFS and Premiere Essential Sound The new panel essential sound in Premiere allows you to have loudness at -23 LUFS in one click. It cannot be changed, except when exporting the file to Audition. My question is: if I use that function and then I used your advice for consistent loudness at -16 (in the encoding process), would I affect my audio by using first -23 and then -16 LUFS?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Francisco, it should be fine as long as it is just limiting and normalizing in each pass, which is what I believe it does. I'll need to test it a bit more to confirm but if it sounds good, two passes of loudness to get to your intended target should not be an issue. Good luck!

Hi WK, I mostly use my Nikon lenses on my Ursa Mini Pro. I did have the original Metabones Speedbooster for Nikon F to m4/3 but I sold it with my GH4 as I didn't use it much. The original version was a little soft. I have heard from multiple people that the newer versions are much better and I've been considering adding one to my kit but haven't yet. I did very much like the continuous aperture ring and the small size. Good luck!

Hi Wayne, I'm also a Nikon D750 shooter. Back when I first bought the GH4, I bought the Metabones Nikon F to micro 4/3 adapter. It was ok but not amazing. I hear that the newer metabones adapters are better. Today, I rarely adapt lenses for the GH5. Hi UltrafiAV, I've been using OEM batteries and dummy battery to power my GH5 and GH5s. I used to use third party batteries for my Nikons but those batteries never lasted as long as the Nikon OEM batteries. They never damaged my cameras, just didn't last as long before their useful life ended.

At 3:20 you said that the HDMI output, outputs 4-2-2 10bit color.. but the GH5 records internal 4-2-2 10 bit color? so whats the point of recording with external recorder? I got confused
@DynamixWarePro
@DynamixWarePro 7 жыл бұрын
Well with an external recorder you can record up to 60fps in 10-bit 4:2:2 (Internally on the GH5 its 60fps 8-bit 4:2:0) at up to I think, 880Mbps (150mbps internally on the GH5) with Atomos recorders, plus you can record in DNxHR or ProRes which are much easier to edit and play back than than the GH5 10-bit videos, and you can choose a different bit rate instead of being stuck with one as on the GH5. Also with GH5, it records internally to h.264 which can have macroblocking issues, where as the ProRes or DNxHR which don't record in macro blocks so won't have any blocking issues. Another plus is that if your final output is in 1080p, you can set the HDMI output from the GH5 to downscale the 10-bit 4:2:2 (or 8-bit 4:2:2) 4K to 1808p onto the external recorder for sharper 1080p than recording in 1080p. Also you get a better and larger screen with an external recorder and with some like the Atomos Flame and Inferno recorders, you get an HDR display and at least with Atomos recorders (the only external recorders I am familiar with) you can get false color which the GH5 doesn't have, waveform monitor that doesn't take up as much of the screen as it does on the GH5 screen, LUT display, focus peaking (especially useful to see when using auto focus where on the GH5, you lose focus peaking when set to auto focus, only on manual focus do you get focus peaking. With an external recorder, you actually get better auto focus with the GH5 as it seems the GH5 autofocus may get better as it seems that the autofocus works fine until you press record on the GH5, then it doesn't work as well, but with an external recorder, you press record on it, not on the camera, so the autofocus should act like the camera isn't recording and work a little better.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 жыл бұрын
You can record to codecs like ProRes or Avid DNx codecs which are far easier to work with when editing than the more compressed H.264 that the GH5 records internally. Sorry for the confusion on that.

Great work Curtis as always Curtis (finally watched the entire thing). You set the standard for reviews in my mind. Wolfcrow isn't far behind, but I like your style a bit more. Anyway, just wondering which converter you would recommend for EF lenses? I'm weighing up between the Metabones and the much, much cheaper (plus decent ND) Fotodiox ND throttle. I know you can't review everything, but where do you stand here? It seems like the ND throttle is a no brainer as it will give me built in ND. Also, is there a way to power these cameras via a wall socket? I've never owned a DSLR - so sorry if this is a stupid question!
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Douglas, thanks! I assume that the Fotodiox ND Throttle adapters do not have a glass element and thus do not provide the benefits of a focal reducer (usually an additional stop of light, wider angle of view, shallower depth of field). So I think the question comes down to priorities - is ND more important than the benefits of a focal reducer (like the Metabones)? I had decent luck with the Metabones. But I also see the value of an in-built ND filter for when I'm shooting outdoors. I'd personally go with the Metabones, but there's a place for the ND Throttle as well.
@douglasfairmeadow
@douglasfairmeadow 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Curtis. I'll have to weight it all up I guess. The focal reduction I don't mind so much, as I can shoot open and ND down if need be. But you're right about wider angle of view. M43 crops in quite a bit on my EF lenses.

Dynamic range plays a key role in being able to recover data that a lower dynamic range camera won't be able to. Its very much like in the audio recorder, to be able to have an analog limiter to be able to use the audio. Video with blowout portions is pretty much useless for professional work, so therefore a wider dynamic range is very desirable, even if a monitor will only show 7 stops to the end user.

I think this was a fair and accurate review. Some people expected the GH5 to be the perfect everything camera and they reacted very strongly when the auto focus in video was not what they expected. I have a GH4 which I love and get great results from. This was a very successful camera. We didn't hear a lot about its limitations for video auto focus. Why not? Was it better? No, the owners didn't really expect high performance auto focus. Their shooting styles were not impacted. I do a lot of event shooting where auto focus is a must. For this I use dedicated video cameras the Panasonic HPX 250 and 270. As you said, one camera is unlikely to be perfect for every situation and every person. Select the right tool for the job. Thanks Michalramzes1. The camera records to 16 bit PCM (like wav). The advantage of a separate recorder is that you can record isolated tracks and mix in post if you're recording more than two people at a time. If not, you can achieve pretty good results straight into camera.

How do you record on a external recorder, and shoot, if you are a one man band? When I record sound, I closely monitor input level with headphones.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 жыл бұрын
It depends on the piece. For me, the camera is almost always on a tripod and the talent is seated. So in these cases, I usually have a table, cart, or just my sound bag on the floor with the recorder and I monitor the audio and the camera at the same time. If the camera is shoulder or gimbal mounted, then I usually need a second person to help operate camera while I take sound.
@Beardedbraceface
@Beardedbraceface 7 жыл бұрын
How is the delay/lag on the HDMI output? The GH4 had a some noticeable delay on the HDMI output. I first noticed it when using it on a gimbal with an external monitor. You get used to it as it's about the same delay as something like a DJI drone, but where it REALLY becomes an issue is when trying to use the camera for live events. I thought I could use the GH4 HDMI out to connect to a projector for a live event for those sitting in the back of the audience. While it WORKS the video was noticeably out of sync with the audio from the PA system making it look like an old kung fu movie. Made it really annoying to watch for some people. This is one thing I never see anyone talking about, probably because it's a very specific use case. I'd LOVE a more realtime output from the GH5, but maybe I just need to get a different camera for that specific use.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 жыл бұрын
There is still some lag. It is not the worst I have seen, possibly just slightly better than the GH4, but that's from memory - my brother inherited the GH4 so I don't have it here for comparison. Definitely not broadcast ready as I'm pretty sure this would also look out of sync to a live audience.

Thanks for that. I'll have to experiment. I shoot only birds and insects and I want a fast turn-around, i.e. don't want to spend a lot of time in Premiere before I render it out. For 1080p video from my GH4 and GH5, I've dialed down the in-camera video and then applied an unsharp mask of between 90 and 120 and a radius of 1.2 and its helped a lot, especially with the slomo clips. What about 4K? Same thing you think?

You mentioned low light video. I video rock gigs with the GH4, the light is what there is and it is usually horrible. The ISO is whatever has to be used. The shutter has to be fast enough that movement is not blurred. And the camera must focus in poor light (some makes get a real problem with that). The battery lasts at least three hours if not four continuous shooting. And the back of the camera does not get scalding hot, turn magenta and stop shooting after 12 minutes like the E-M5ii does. I noticed you plugged a Rode straight into the GH5, with the GH4 I have to use an adaptor plug (TRS to TRRS) - Have they changed the mic socket connections?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jeff. I really like the GH4 and 5 as well. No, it is still a TRS input. The VideoMic Pro uses a TRS plug.
@jeffslade1892
@jeffslade1892 7 жыл бұрын
Curtis Judd - the GH4 socket is TRRS. The Pana MS2 mic is TRRS. If I plug the TRS Rode Stereo-Mic into the GH4 I only get one channel, the wiring convention is different. The Rode Video-Mic is mono. I cannot remember whether it parks its output on one or both camera channels. Rode do make two adaptor TRS/TRRS leads, only one works and sorry I cannot remember the part number. Due to the high volume of rock gigs, 90 to 135dB, I have the problem of having too much sound available and drop the level through a Tascam 4-track. Tascam and Rode use the normal stereo wiring convention, it is Panasonic that is out of step, I still need the adaptor from Tascam to camera to synch.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeff, when I plug the RODE VideoMic Pro with it's TRS plug into the GH5, I get the same audio on left and right channels. So it would appear that the GH5 has a TRS mic input. I seem to remember it was that way on the GH4 as well but perhaps I am mistaken on that.
@jeffslade1892
@jeffslade1892 7 жыл бұрын
I am certain the GH4 is TRRS. If the GH5 manual mentions the DMW-MS2 shotgun as an option then the GH5 is TRRS too. I expect it to be TRRS - the MS2 is TRRS. The Rode Stereo-Mic does not work without the adaptor. My first Stereo-Mic got damaged, possibly by the camera, it does power the MS2. The reason the Rode Video-Mic works is because it is mono. However the audio quality improves with the adaptor because it then feeds the correct 10k impedance, plus it becomes compatible with other external recording devices. The sleeve (S) on the TRRS is not the common but an input. I scribbled a note on the SC4 box that the R2 is probably the common. Correction - Rode do not make the correct adaptor, the Rode SC4 is *wrong* protocol. I believe we want an "OMTP to CTIA/AHJ" which I found on Amazon. I bought a load of these things until I got one that worked, the pic looks like the right one, but they're all fairly similar. Prior to that I made a lead up myself, unfortunately I've mislaid the diagram.
@jeffslade1892
@jeffslade1892 7 жыл бұрын
I found the diagram in a notebook - I cannot draw it here, so - Panasonic TRRS is T - left R1 - right R2 - common ground S - mic (i.e. shotgun, but this has a zoom capability by blending with L & R) The mic inputs seem to be 10k ohm to ground. I'm not sure how it powers the MS2 but the camera does power it. whereas Rode Stereo Mic TRS is T - Left R - Right S - common ground. The VideMic joins L&R The spacing is such that putting a TRS jack into a TRRS socket will short R2 and S together, which can produce strange results, the StereoMic goes mono when R2 and S are connected together (because S is mono input perhaps)

I was shooting on my 5dMIII with 24-70 tamron IS until it was stolen. Then I decided to go with gh5 - speedbooster ultra and sigma 18-35. This setup has almost the same DOF but the stabilization on gh5 is about twice better - my footage is a lot less shaky handheld it. The only downside is that the RAW (magiclantern) is still uncomparable better than the 422 10bit - I was able to play much more with the dynamic range than on the gh5 but working with the raw was a pain. I'm blown away with the 150Mbit 42210bit codec - the quality is outstanding - yet still not comparable with the raw when you need to push underexposed scene but if you are careful and properly expose on gh5 I do not see almost any downsides (of course the dynamic range is a little less). But the convenient of having only 150Mbit instead of 800Mbit on GH5 and using paid version of davinci which can play the footage almost in realtime - the postprocesing is a joy. I'm not a professional, only enthusiasts who does not like compromises - the gh5 is a perfect match. And one more thing - the 180fps (though only 1080p) it opens a whole new creativity for your videos (even the 60fps in 4k). I wanted to go with the sony a7XX but it is only 8bit codec which does not allow you to grade much and I love to do gradings. Maybe the next FF sony might have finally 10bit.

Great video! I am getting one of these camera's very soon. I don't know a lot about photography as of right now. Do you know a lense that would be good for shooting things close up, less than a foot from the lens? Thank's in advance, and again, great video, very informative!

Good tips. Is that where you live? Wow, it's really beautiful. Curtis could you do a video on the new DaVinci Resolve 14 with Fairlight. On how to improve dialog and general audio? Would be really interesting to watch that. Not many people have done that type of video on KZbin. thx

Hi Narek, thanks and yes, this is where I live. We love it here. I am planning to do probably several videos on the Fairlight features in the future. I haven't upgraded to version 14 yet as I have a few critical projects I'm working on at the moment. But will definitely have some things to say about Fairlight soon. Thanks!

I recently bought a GH5S, partly due to your reviews, thanks for that! :) Now I have a question regarding frame rate. I produce almost exclusively for online audience (KZbin) so people will watch my videos on 60Hz screens. I don't want the soap opera effect, I want the regular, movie-ish look, at least most of the time. So it would be obvious to shoot 24 fps but my question is this: does a 24Hz motion picture look good on a 60Hz screen? Isn't there some judder? What are your thoughts, Curtis?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Kelna91, I think it is fine. I shoot all of my videos that are posted here on KZbin at 23.976. They seem to play back decently on my 60Hz monitor. Does it look ok on your end?
@Kelna91
@Kelna91 6 жыл бұрын
@@curtisjudd It certainly does, yes. But again, I don't always see or hear the difference between "perfect" and "good enough". :) I used to record audio in mp3 and hey, it worked really well for me, LOL! I wasn't sure there isn't some theoretical limitation re frame rates that I'm not familiar with. Something you are or aren't supposed to do (like recording in mp3). Thanks for the answer, it is reassuring that all your YT footage is 24 Hz. Have a great day!

Thank you so much! I've been looking for a good all round review/commentary. I own (and love) my gh4! I'm a travel youtuber and do alot of "run and gun" shooting. Seems like the IS is much better then the GH4. Have you noticed any other issues with the IS apart from it using the battery a bit more? It's so tempting to upgrade just for that! Also I would be going to a lot of music gigs. I am interested in the the low light performance. Do you have any additional footage in that type of environment? I am also interested in hearing your thoughts about the size increase. Do you use any gimbals with the gh4 and gh5? Is the size an issue? I was thinking of getting the Beholder EC1. Thanks, keep up the good work and commentary! Learning loads!
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 жыл бұрын
+This Way Up World hi, the IS is quite good for handheld, non-walking shots but still needs a gimbal for walking so it is good to hear you're considering that! Unfortunately I don't have any concert footage with the GH5 but I find that in those situations, I usually don't need over ISO 1600 to keep the stage lighting from clipping the performers. In any case, the GH5 seems cleaner than my GH4 was in every situation I've shot so far. No problems with my Zhiyun Crane gimbal and the GH4 or GH5. Good luck!

Curtis, I don't think it's correct to compare capture DR and display DR stop for stop. As far as I know cameras capture a wider DR of a scene and then "compress" it into whatever color space the target display is capable of reproducing. Therefore, a higher capture DR is always noticeable regardless of monitor capabilities.

Excellent and very fair and to the point review. The GH5 really is an awesome cam. Kyno looks like a terrific product as well. Do you think it transcodes as fast as Edit Ready? Great shots, by the way. Beautifully exposed and color balanced.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks William. Good question re: Edit Ready, I'll need to check that. I believe Kyno is more of a Edit Prep app with a variety of tools in addition to transcoding and metadata entry. It also has a de-noiser you can apply while transcoding which is something I'm interested to look at more closely.
@avarmadillo
@avarmadillo 7 жыл бұрын
I'll be interested to hear more about it. I'd consider purchase, but I'd like to know how its transcoding speed compares. Edit Ready is free if you ever decided to compare them. Edit Ready is not as extensive, but it does give you several options regarding transcoding. Did I mention it's free? I'd really be interested in the de-noiser. If it is any good that would be a valuable prep tool. I'm not happy with the audio tools in FCPX. Soundtrack pro was a fantastic app. It's been several years now, and I'm still angry that Apple ceased to produce it.

@avarmadillo 7 жыл бұрын
Actually, I remember now. It was free to begin with, but they did some kind of update that added features. And now they charge for it. But there may be a free trial download. But it works well as a transcoder---most of the pros who use it on EOSHD say it's faster at transcoding than FCPX pro, and faster than any transcoder they know of--but no one mentioned Kyno.

I love the GH5 feature arrangement for Custom Settings through a physical dial on the top, but can these be changed during filming?, or do I have to stop, then change the Custom setting & then start recording again? For example if I have 4K 60P set for C1 & 180 FPS on C2 could I move the selector during filming, to move from 4K to Slomo & then back again to 4K without damaging the camera? - I realise I’d have to “tidy it up” in the edit, or cover the transition with B Roll, but if the camera allows that, it would be incredible
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter, no, moving the mode dial during a video take ends the recording presumably because there are some settings which would not work (e.g., some of the configuration probably sits at the start of a video file and per the specification, cannot change mid file). I hope that makes sense.

When talking about stabilization -- the shot you have (walking behind someone on the road) seems to be hand-held while you're walking. I've seen footage where the GH5 performs some kind of self-panning (left/right) when in stabilization mode while walking. Did you not experience that issue?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 жыл бұрын
Not that I noticed but I think how smoothly one walks has an influence on that. My thought is that I'll still need my gimbal for walking shots.

Thanks Ferhan. I have Nikon lenses and the original speed booster seemed a bit soft when combined with my Nikon lenses (which I know are sharp lenses from using them natively on Nikon cameras). I think it might be a good time for me to try the newer version. Thanks!

I don't think you will have any issue with sharpness on the GH4/5 when it comes to video with the new speed boosters. If anything the footage can look too sharp and look rather video if you know what I mean, I find dialing the sharpness down within the profiles and even using vintage glass gives the footage a wonderfully more organic look, which in some situations can be ideal. Great content as always Curtis, all the best.

You mentioned some AF Modes are better than others for video. Personally with the GH4 I've found face recognition, tracking and 49-area are for stills, and that video will focus on what you point it at in 1-area or pinpoint. The movie "continuous focus" is apparently slower than AFC to provide smooth transitions.

Curtis, do you find that preamps on GH5 are a bit too noisy? I've just got it and kinda surprised that it's rather noisy. Even if I set my levels to -12 dB, I can still hear hissing via headphones. Premiere reports around -56 dB of noise in a quiet room with a Rode Videomic Pro (set to 0db). Is it the same for your GH5 or did I get a faulty unit?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 4 жыл бұрын
Hard to tell because it depends on how quiet your quiet room is. What I can say is that I would not rely on headphones and hearing hiss there as a test - that could easily be the headphone amp and/or the headphones creating self-noise. -56dB in a household room would not at all surprise me and be about where I'd expect it. At that level, I would suspect actual noise in the room vs. self noise. In my tests, I have a special room in the basement with sound blankets and with a good microphone, usually find a practical noise floor around -65dB RMS, maybe a little better with higher quality mics. But with a VideoMic, GH5, and a typcial household room, -56dB would not surprise me at all.
