@CaptainJCRage7 жыл бұрын
Oh don't get me wrong. I love the X-T2. I think that fuji is doing a fantastic job and if canon and nikon doesn't innovate and push the mirrorless technology then they will be left behind by Fuji, Panasonic and sony. I've been shooting nikon for almost 20 years now and now that I have the X-t2 I use my nikon glass on it. my other Nikon DSLRs are just sitting inside the dry boxes most of the time. It's not as fun to shoot anymore compared to the Fujis who by the way listens a lot to its customers!. cheers

@truecuckoo7 жыл бұрын
Zed ProMedia Yeah it is quite amazing. Especially that magical stabiliser. I'm using a 6mm kowa lens sometimes. It works perfectly with the stabiliser! The only thing I hate with this camera is the colours. I think it's inconsistent with the white balance, and there's constantly something odd about the skin colours. Some odd greens and stuff. I'm used to grading, but I was hoping to find a setting where minimal grading is needed.
@LeeZavitz7 жыл бұрын
cuckoomusic This might be unconventional but I usually lock my White Balance to 5200k. It almost works in every scenario and you don't have to worry about it ever changing on you. The only time I would change it is under super orange tungsten lighting. But so far I like the colour science more than Sony and that's what I'm use to working with. I checked out your channel and watched your video where you adjusted the shadows. It looks pretty cool. Not many cameras would let you change that stuff while filming haha. Probably why the audio went out of sync.
@truecuckoo7 жыл бұрын
Zed ProMedia aha. I'm coming from a Blackmagic Pocket background. So I'm also used to locking the white balance. I Usually lock it at 4500 I think, and never changing it, and grading Log. I also like the colour slightly better than Sony, (which I think looks too lifeless out of the box). I think I'm gonna have to check out vLog after all. Having those whites blow felt like a step back from shooting in log...

Side note, I use manual focus for my main projects as well but I did find the AF to not be as bad as the results you seem to have in here. I'm using the 12-35 2.8 ii Panasonic lens and I actually get pretty good results with the AF for vlogging. One tip I found online that I've been using is to have the AF speed fast, but the responsiveness set to slower. It doesn't jump around as much and the results have been great. You can check out my result vlog for results (that's not a shameless plug, but if you wanted to see the results). Either way thanks your video, the footage you shot with it looks fantastic.

Well done, Lee! The video colors look really nice out of the GH5 - we're testing the camera right now, too. Activating VLOG-L via snail mail was a little bit ridiculous for sure. can you comment on manual focusing with the panasonic native lenses. I heard the fly by wire focusing is a lot more difficult. Did you have any problems or difficulty pulling focus with the 42.5?
@Marvin_PA7 жыл бұрын
A fair review. I think it will be interesting to see what comes out of the collaboration between Max and PhotoJoseph. Hopefully they'll come up with some definitive options for set-up & lens to get decent AF. I think your most poignant statement was that you went off and produced great footage. So in your case AF isn't critical but for some it is, but for most of us all the other way cool features make it a great camera choice.
@LeeZavitz7 жыл бұрын
Marvin_PA yeah I'm curious to see what they come up with. I have a feeling not all lenses work equally and that's why my camera really sucks at focusing. No matter what settings I try my results are similar. I only have one native Panasonic lens so I might go rent another just to make sure. Or maybe my camera is flawed.

BTW, it took me about 2 days of tweaking, but I am now shooting with a wide range of lenses, across a range of common environments and conditions with good solid focus that is pretty fast to quite fast in most instances, and I haven't seen a lost, drifted or mis-cued focus in 2 days now since finding useful sets for my lenses and requirements. Unfortunately, they give you such a degree, number and range of focus and related customization options without any default sets that it pretty much requires that you optimize it for each different shooting types/lenses/conditions/requirements that you have. Once you have, it works nicely-- sometimes better than any of my SONY's or Nikon's. Several of the types of focus issues you showed there are definitely not a matter of contrast verses phase detection. Simply, it is a matter of settings options, which could definitely be improved with a firmware update, and made simpler with some useful configuration settings optimizations and defaults-- preferably in that same firmware update. It is possible that you, and some others, have a lemon, but all I can say is that there are settings optimization that make modes like Face Detection really sing. I have to really skew multiple settings options quite a bit to get that FT mode working as poorly as the dreadful experience you showed. To be clear, I am sure you tried a bunch of option nominations, but there are a dozen settings that interact with each other (as well as external factors) to optimize focus; of which the speed/sensitivity are just two of many. In other words, if you had one or more things set sub-optimally for the Face Tracking, you could try every combination of the speed/sensitivity and see nothing but bad focusing. Also, in low (really low) light or completely flat contrast (very flat) the contrast detection works poorly. However, that is obviously not the issue you were having, based on the video environment you showed. I am used to complex software and hardware development-- sometimes with extensive levels and types of variables and interactions that need to be tested in both simple and complex combinations, sometimes adding-up to many thousands of permutations, which I have to create testing/validation plans and execute them (thank god for testing automation methods for those types of things). So, compared to that, this was at least a bit more straightforward (created a 12 x 5 x 8 matrix and tested against it in the three major types of indoor and outdoor settings I required). Panasonic can, and hopefully will soon, make this a lot easier and quicker for all of us with presets and revisions to focus curves and such; but until then, thankfully there are a lot of people looking into all of this. However, if in what I expect is the unlikely event that we don't see good videos on this in another week or so, I am thinking of doing my own in-depth YT video on how to test and create your own optimized presets. In any event, good luck and have fun!

Cool! At least you have experience with it and have had a chance to see what works. I just dont have the time and honestly it seems ridiculous that you have to play with it and do different settings to make different scenarios work. I just want (face tracking, wide tracking and center) And with those scenarios I want to be able to change the focus shift speed and thats all. Thats basically what its like with Sony and It makes sense. You dont have to spend hours tinkering. Anyway thanks for the comment and sharing your info. I'll have to give it another shot.

Finally someone who understands that professionals don't really care about auto focus; we care about amazing footage. Don't get me wrong, auto focus is great on a gimbal, but typically I just stop down to a much smaller aperture, to increase my depth of field, when I have to track a moving subject. Unless something new and amazing comes out soon, the GH5 is my next camera.

@LeeZavitz7 жыл бұрын
What types of comparisons were you interested in? Please dont say autofocus haha. The XT2 wins
@TomRupp7 жыл бұрын
LOL, I figured as much the autofocus was better, but it is nice to have someone with hands on both to confirm it. I have an XT2 and love it, but I'm finding that my client work is going more towards video. I like that the GH5 has IBIS and I have a zhiyun crane for the XT2 but, I find it daunting to always setup since I need to break it down when traveling. Not doing anything like music videos mostly corporate and product work. 60fps is also on the list of nice to have. I think one interesting comparison that no one really does would be 60fps slow down out of the GH5 vs a 30fps slow down out of the XT2. Is the extra fps very noticeable in the slowdown smoothness? Ultimately trying to decide if I should put funds toward a GH5 setup or go all in on the XT2 video with an external recorder, proper slider, and better lighting. Thanks again, really value your opinion and appreciate the videos you put out!

m0nztam0nk Thanks, I think it might be a neat comparison. I was searching around KZbin and most of the comparisons are on much older cameras. However, I think the result will probably be the same in terms of smoothness in 4K.

I love your reviews, man.. I honestly would love to see a little more on the photo side with this camera though.. Im mainly a stills photographer.. but I do want to start doing more video.. however, I already own Canon equipment for all that, I also own an Olympus camera (and a Fuji Xpro2). So I have a few m4:3 lenses.. I already know the video is bad ass on this camera, and I don't care for the AF in video all that much, so that checks off the list, but if i were to toss this camera in my smaller bag that I take out with me w/ one or two lenses, if I wanted to snap some photos too, would it be pretty good? ya feel me? I've also considered upgrading my Olympus to the EM1 mark II as well.. I kinda want to know which would be the better buy i guess.. (even though I already know the saying, Oly for stills Panny for video..) but im not finding very much info at all about the still quality of this camera.

It's actually pretty good up till ISO 1000 and then Fuji XT2 pulls ahead. But honestly the Fuji Xtrans iii colour is still much much better imo. And the XT2 is just a much better camera for photography. That's just my personal opinion. I also like a shallower depth of field and you are losing that with m4/3. Thats where a fullframe camera will still crush apsc and m4/3

I am wondering how the GH5 sensor stabilisation works with different lenses, and will it work well with both a 10mm and an 85mm. The a7sII stabilisation options allow you to choose different focal lengths manually in the settings to match the stabilisation amount to a specific lens. So how the GH5 handles this? Especially because I will be planning to have fully manual lenses, like the Samyang 10mm and 85mm. Anyone has a GH5 that can help me out

so if im going to be using this for vlogging 40% of the time, is it really that bad the AF :/ ???
@LeeZavitz7 жыл бұрын
From my experience you will have a lot of shots focused on the background and not on your face. I dont know how it performs on newer lenses like the 12-60mm f2.8-4 but on the lens I have it wasn't very good. Watch some other reviews that use Autofocus I dont really have the answer to your question until I have more free time to play with Autofocus.

Neistat's using the GH5 now for his vlogs and the AF-C nailed it the entire vid. Crazy how it works perfectly for some people but for others it's nigh useless.
@LeeZavitz7 жыл бұрын
Maybe its the lens I was using. I watched a couple of his vlogs and it seems to work alright for him. I wonder if he's using the new 12-60?
@Dreamreal12127 жыл бұрын
Are you sure Neistat is using the GH5? I thought he was using only Sony now after he ditched canon?
@LeeZavitz7 жыл бұрын
Derek Allegrini he switched to Sony 100% but his last few vlogs have been with the gh5 you can see the reflection of the flip out screen in his sunglasses. And you can just tell by the image quality. Af seems to work ok for him so he must have found the proper settings or it's just the wide angle lens he's using

Hi, I want to buy a new Panasonic GH5 for make "Real Estate Video Walkthrough" using a Stabilizer, and I worry that the GH5 may have problems with the focus on this type of videos. ¿ Can I use the GH5 ( + Metabones adapter + Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX-II 11-16mm f/2.8 Lens for Nikon Mount ), and keep a great focus while walk through the House or there are other better camera option in this price range for this type of videos ? Sorry for my english, I'm using google translator.

great video, I just picked up the 42.5mm 1.7 as well the other day for my gh5, sadly i had to return it due to a dead pixel. My new one should be here today with the 12-35mm II, and Ill do some tests on the Ronin to see how auto focus is. I was torn between the sigma 18-35mm and 12-35mm.
@LeeZavitz7 жыл бұрын
yeah so was I. I was actually thinking about the Olympus 12-40 as well because it has hardstops for manual focus. But I'm glad I got the Sigma 18-35 now that I know the AF isnt good in video.
@jasonlindquistmedia7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, ill see what it ends up lookin like on the ronin , but if it isnt up to par ima sell it get the sigma 18-35mm , maybe tokina 11-16mm.
@LeeZavitz7 жыл бұрын
Both are good choices. Obviously the Tokina is way wider. Do you use an electronic follow focus? I do and having hard stops is the way to go. Focus buy wire is so annoying.
@jasonlindquistmedia7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, do you mean like man. on the 12-35mm? kinda confused sorry lol. yeah hard stops i understand its the lens focus ring that has it so you hit the foucs points more accuratly?
@LeeZavitz7 жыл бұрын
Yeah exactly. The focus ring is synced with the cameras focal length properly where the focus by wire lenses are not. Makes it hard to manually focus.

do you think it is possible for them to update the AF system in later firmware?

I'm curious how the GH5 does taking still pictures. I think I already know the GH5 probably has the biggest video bang for the buck (4K60p; IBIS+OIS2; excellent remote-control app; etc.).
@LeeZavitz7 жыл бұрын
I actually played with some raw files and there is a decent amount of dynamic range I didnt expect to see. But I personally dont like the look you get from a m4/3 sensor so I dont know when I would really use the camera for photos. But if enough people ask I can make a more in depth photography review.

I would love to see a photography review. Everyone does video reviews because most of its exciting features pertain to video, but im a hybrid shooter so both are important to me. The GH5 looks great and I think im gonna purchase it.

no rolling shutter? no rolling shutter? please! I do vfx for a living and trust me.. it has rolling shutter.. great camera but still rolling shutter.
@thizinitgreatgimmedemcakes64527 жыл бұрын
I saw the rolling shutter lmao
@1MichaelRWeir7 жыл бұрын
I agree it does have it... but very, very little when compared to most other camera's out there! Most other ones are like 3X the amount of the GH5.
@LeeZavitz7 жыл бұрын
It has slight rolling shutter I just ment its not intense like all the other 4k cameras out there in this price range that dont have Global shutters. It gets me excited and I jumpped to saying "no rolling shutter" instead of "very little rolling shutter."
@izzfoshizz99827 жыл бұрын
Yeah seriously. I noticed it in his own example of "no rolling shutter".
@ConnorLipke6 жыл бұрын
Less rolling shutter + great IBIS makes it almost un-noticeable to someone just watching videos on youtube. It's not like you're whipping the camera around when making vlogs or even shooting b-roll(outside of in camera transitions)

As far as I understand it (I do not own a gh5), you get all 180 frames but i.e. stretched to 6 seconds if the output framerate is 30fps. So perhaps you can extract the frames as an image sequence to work with. Imho this could be a workaround, if you want to change the output fps.
