I finally deep clean my filthy Porsche Boxster I bought for dirt cheap at Copart salvage auction. We do a full detail since it was nasty, and to my surprise it cleaned up like a brand new car. I drove this car back 1,000 miles after fixing it in the parking lot 20 minuets after buying it as a non running unknown mileage "junk" car that no one cared about. Unfortunately we find a couple more issues needing to be fixed.

It takes a second for the tensioners to pump up with oil, that's what the noise is on cold start. Most/all early boxsters do it.

Should also add that the tensioners are easy to replace and cheap. Supposedly it gets rid of the noise. Helpmediy has a vid replacing em and is also a HUGE resource for DIYing these cars :)

The rattle on startup is really common. It is due to oil draining out of the cam chain tensioners. You can upgrade the oil pressure relief valve to a 997 version which will improve it but ultimately you need to replace tensioners.

That start up noise is the chain tensioners. Perfectly normal at that mileage but get them replaced just in case.

Keep the wheels with the car, remember how excited you were when you found the spec sheet, and plan on keeping it with the car, keep it original and pass that joy on to the next owner.

If you leave it in gear and don't accelerate while going down, it won't consume a liter of petrol, but if you leave it in neutral, it will consume as much as it does at idle. So, for fuel consumption, it is much better to leave it in gear.

really, the throttle being shut when in gear is more of a benefit than running in neutral and idle with no running resistance.

As an owner of at 2002 Boxster S with just 29K miles, this is the type of "driver" I dream of! These 2.5 liter's were pretty bulletproof and with 2 row bearings did not suffer the IMS failures (although overblown at less than 9%) of the later 2.7 and 3.2L motors. Mine is clean as a whistle at 29K and showing NO signs of wear but it has had meticulous oil changes over the years. Cam chain tensioners are an issue as the oil channels get glunked up over time if they sit a lot, and they get lazy at building oil pressure but are easily remedied. But the 2.5L/5 speed combination is overlooked as a "base car". It's really better geared and actually brings out the best in the car. So much fun to drive a base Boxster at 9/10ths and enjoy what it's best at! In fact, I'm looking for one now as a driver...wanna sell? If you can afford the upkeep, this car can be bought for less than Miata money, which is amazing...be fearless and find a bargain, as you have! Great job on the videos and all the best!

A great find and thank you for saving it. One note, the convertible top should be cleaned separate from the rest of the car (different detergent). You didn't hurt anything with this one wash but over time it could damage the top. It looks great!

Excellent deal of a car there! Here in the Pacific Northwest we have plenty of car creeping critters, I have found using dryer sheets zip-tied around the engine bay have helped to keep them at bay. It's cheap too!

The top can be cantankerous. The handbrake has a switch that sometimes doesn't switch, pull it up and down a few times might convince the top to work. Also there are switches under the top lid, pressing on the lid in various places and an offering to the Porsche gods helps sometimes too. The top problem dash light often goes out after a mile or two as well.

Great content. Regarding the ticking engine noise upon original cold start after long storage at copart and before with former owner. You say it is still there for a second upon cold start. I wonder if you let it sit longer and oil drains (such as in a hydraulic lifter) that the ticking noise upon cold start will last a few seconds longer and then go away as before.

They all use plastic now. Bmw Mercedes and all American and Japanese cars. It's cheaper abs easier to produce. They last about 200-300,000 miles, so they will outlive most owners.

I’ve had that same gas issue, but going the other way, from Tempe to LV…. Literally coasted into gas station on I40 on fumes…. There just aren’t enough gas stations on 93

What a gorgeous car. You have made a lovely job of the clean up. I have been thinking of getting one for my wife. Second-hand and that sort of age. We have had a GM Vauxhall/Opel 2.2 Bertone convertible for the past 19 years having bought it at a year old. Still only 77,000 miles. We bought it as it was a full four seater that we needed as our daughters were still in booster seats. Now they are driving themselves and I'm idly looking for a great for my wife. A little off topic, but at 10:00 mins, that White Chevy in fornt of you is actually a rebadged Holden Commodore - designed and built in Australia by General Moters/Holden, and exported to the US. They were one of the most popular cars here in Australia until 2017, when GM stopped production. There was a Pontiac GTO built from the same base car. The top-spec Holden Commodore SS came with a 6.2 litre V8, paired with a 6 speed box. A ridiculously fun car to drive- sort of like a 4 door Corvette, only cheaper. Very nicely done! One thought, do with it what you will. I’m an ardent enthusiast, both of the cars-and many KZbinrs. That said , the world does not need another cold start video. Ever. Unless maybe a 275GTB 4-can or maybe a Bugatti 57s Atalante. Save your engines and your gas.
