The fainting so easily isn't even the problem tho. Onix is one of those "physically defensive" relatively low HP low Sp. Def Rock/Ground types like the Rhydon and Golem lines (exceptions are Tyranitar and Rhyperior in sand), so of course Beautifly could easily OHKO all of them with 4x Special coverage like Mega Drain at the correct level. Here's the kicker tho: Aerodactyl is ultra-fast and has acceptable Attack, Rhydon and Golem are slower, also don't have stellar HP stats BUT... at least they can do DAMAGE! I'd EVEN be happy if they switched out Onix' Attack with its SPEED (70 I think) instead of its 130-160 Defense or whatever it may be, that'd be overkill but 70 Attack? That would help it! Also 70-80 HP would AT LEAST make it PHYSICALLY DEFENSIVE! Like bro why? WHY? Why can this thing do absolutely nothing than take non-STAB normal Tackles and Pounds? Like come on Game Freak, you could've given this thing SOMETHING? Who writes the Dex entries anyways, the Professors' kids he sent on adventures throughout the regions? Onix is one of my favourite Mons and yes STEELIX is hyper-super-mega cool... Onix... You look so cool, yet Regigigas is more useful than you.

@@Elijah-hz9ls there's a video out there that explains it better than I will, but I can't remember its title nor who made it so I'll try to paraphrase it as best I can. The reason why Onix is the way it is, is entirely because it acts as a learning tool for new players. In a typical playthrough led by a kid who doesn't have the power of experience, by the time they reach Brock, they're probably still in the single digit category. It's been a while since I've played, but I believe the first elemental attacks learned by the starters aren't until around level 10 (I may be wrong, though). In any case, for a new player who's just kinda going through the game, tackle/scratch are the main moves they'd be using at that point. Then anything caught like the bugs, birds, or rodents on the way. Said things caught wouldn't really have anything useful by this time. All their physical moves are kinda useless against Brock as rock-types are resistant to the Weedles/Nidorans' poison stings and tackles/scratches (in Red/Blue, neither Nidoran learned double kick early enough). Onix was there as a defensive wall that made the player think of alternative strategies. Its attack stat was made to be weak as the developers still wanted to give the player a chance to win. So around that time, players would notice those other moves like vine whip and ember. They would then learn that some moves work off of different stats and some Pokemon are more vulnerable to them, even if they could be resistant (such as Onix taking damage from ember). TLDR: learning opportunity for new players still in the single digits.

36:03 "I don't know if I can count on that" Surprisingly enough, you can. There is a group of NPCs with good AI that on the second turn will either boost its stats or heal, Lorelei is part of that group and she will have Dewgong use Rest on the second turn about 80% of the time. I thought you knew that when I saw Dig alongside Earthquake on Onix's moveset before you deleted, because delaying the first turn with Fly or Dig and have Dewgong rest while my Pokémon sets up is a strategy I used in my Pidgeotto run.

Lorelei's Dewgong has a 50% chance of using Rest (who has always a Psychic move except in GO) on Turn 2 (should be Turn 1 but Gen I). How the 80% Rest chance come from? Against Nidoking (pokemon used in RB Speedrun and has the WR) it has a 50% chance to use Rest any turn except the 2nd, where it's guaranteed to use Rest. However, Dewgong WILL use Rest against a non-Ice weak Fighting and Poison Pkmn every turn, causing insanely long battles (and ended losing to Struggle recoil) against some Poison Pokemon. To evade this situation, in Pokemon Yellow Lorelei's Dewgong's moves are considered neutral 40% of the time. For Nidoking (again the Pokemon for a speedrun, and is actually older than in RB because no Squirtle starter) Lorelei's Dewgong had a 30% chance to use Rest every turn (now it also has Bubble Beam) against it except in the 2nd where the chance is 80%. This AI is only done for her Dewgong and only in Yellow.

In Gen II, Top trainers had Great AI which is better than Good AI. The trainers with Good AI had a similar modification than in Gen I with the following exceptions: -If a Pokemon it's weak to one type and resist the other now the AI considers that move as neutral. -For resistances and weakness, it only considers moves with doesn't have 0 Power. -For immunities it totally dismiss the move unless there is no alternative... There's a similar AI modification similar to RBY AI 2 modification... that doesn't include healing moves and it works in the 1st turn of battle (there's a bug with item usage that Gen II speedrunners abuse, specially against Red). Also, in Gen II, there's a basic AI (shared by all trainers except Twins) that dismisses many situations where the move would be useless. And the Status AI modification also dismisses poisoning a Poison type and type inmunities (yep, the AI doesn't use Hypnosis on Darks and Sing on Ghosts even though they're AFFECTED).

@@farnan92 Like I said, I did a Pidgeotto run and I started to notice this, and I wondered about it and I remembered the Pokémon AI Tournament video said something about Lorelei's Dewgong's Rest being nerfed in Yellow, so I looked up Gen 1 AI and in pokemonspeedruns, it show me why it was happening. Modifications 2 and 3 explained why this was happening, since Dewgong would have had no reason to use anything but Aurora Beam. I might have mistaken the 80% chance of Rest at the actual percentage it happens, but I battled the E4 lots of times, and I do mean lots and it using Rest on the second turn seemed to happen a hell of a lot more than 50%.

I really wish they made Onix a whole lot stronger, but I have the feeling that Onix has 45 Attack due to being Brock's main Pokemon. If it had 120 Attack, I guess they thought it would probably be frigging impossible for new players to take it down. But that beautiful 4x weakness to both Grass and Water circumvents that, I'd say. I love jrose and think he's amazing, but Scott's Thoughts has REALLY been stepping up his quality and consistency recently. His overlay pulls real-time stat data directly from his ROM now, and he does multiple runs per mon to get optimal consistency on strats. Not trying to compare the 2, just saying that if you like jrose, Scott's Thoughts is definitely worth giving a look for a bit of a different approach on the same subject matter. He's not just an imitator, he's found a lil niche of his own.

It's interesting how the accuracy seems to play out. As a children, I found that using Thunder with my Jolteon basically never missed even though roughly one out of every 4 should, but in turn it seemed to miss damn near 100 percent of the time when using that move with Zapdos or any other Pokemon. Figured it was a trade off I was ok with tho, and just went with it.

The more I look at the three Rock and Ground type lines, the more apparent it is that Onix is just horrible. Higher defense doesn’t mean much when you have bad HP, and it’s special is as bad as Geodude and Ryhorn, but at least those two can evolve. All you’re left with is better speed, which you can’t really capitalize on. Poor Onix.

36:50 I think Dewgong is actually coded in a way that it always uses Rest on turn 2. I am not entirely sure but I remember a few speedrunners mentioning this in the past. This is probably one of the first cases where the 'Expectations vs Reality' meme could be applied to pokemon.
