@@kaptainKrill Correct. The Super Game Boy can give separate pallets to static portions of the screen if the game is specifically coded to work with the Super Game Boy. This was probably intended for things like title screens or cutscene slides, but Pokemon takes advantage of this since battle sprites are static and moves are simply sprites placed over top. Jynx is using an entirely different sprite from the front though. So that was tweaked too.

It's hated because it's "ugly" and a "racist caricature", but I respect its design conceptually. It's actually inspired by a mythical Japanese creature called "yama-uba", so it makes a lot of sense that it has seductive mannerisms despite being grotesque. Also, frostbites can lead to purple/black skin, and it's given Dry Skin as a hidden ability (frostbites can heal by warming up the body without outright exposing it to high temperatures). Btw, Jynx didn't do as well as I expected. I thought it'd come very close to Alakazam if not overtake it.

Actually I tried the Jynx solo run about a month ago, I ended up beating the game also at level 64 but it took me 9:09, 4 whole hours more than yours (kinda expected because I only beat Kanto like five times counting the remakes almost 20 years ago). I obtained the TM for Body Slam but decided to stick with Mega Punch and learn Body Slam via level up, because I kept Bubblebeam until the end in my movepool and I thought I might need to delete Body Slam and reteach it again for Champion's Alakazam, deleting Psychic for it. I also went with Ice Punch until the Elite Four, having Ice Beam and Blizzard via TM in case they were needed. Why I kept Bubblebeam? Because I didn't remember that Ice is normal damage against Fire in Gen1, making Ice Beam also super effective against Fire/Flying Charizard, silly me. Had I realized that I would have had a more consistent moveset not depending on TMs. Anyway, great run! I had fun watching it, and more fun comparing the events to my own run (yes, I also had to reach level 18 for Lick to beat Brock, by the way). EDIT: And yeah, I noticed something off with the Jynx sprites until I realized they were the Gold ones, and the back sprite being pixelated to match Gen1 resolution.

Haven’t even watched the video yet (it’s been live for less then it’s runtime), but that has got to be one of the shortest solo JRose11 runs not just in quite some time, but ever; I think only some of the early starter runs, where he was much lighter in detail and strategy, were shorter. I predict a something quite similar to the Mr. Mine sweep in the improved Red/Blue minimum battles run. But even better with ice moves for additional coverage. Let’s go! Edit: Okay, much, much better, the sleep addition and carrying Ice Beam and Blizzard too really sped things up. That 5 hour runtime is so deceptive, this would be near Gengar levels were it not for Brock grinding. But that’s how the game was built, can’t fault it for that. What a great run to do for No. 50, eh? And yes, I noticed the Gen II Jynx sprites. Any particular reason you wanted hose for this run? Was it to unambiguously have Jynx’s newer purple-skinned design?

Rival 2 and the rocket grunt with Dig before Misty. Ice Beam then Erica, then Game Corner, Lavender Town, Koga/Safari, Silph, Blaine, Sabrina, Giovani. I thought this order would be best despite having to backtrack a little bit to pick up Strength. Everybody except Lorelei once and Final Rival were first try wins. Personally i believe ice should still be neutral against fire. When ice melts, it becomes water, and water is super effective, so even if ice is not very effective, it turning into water balances it out to neutral damage. Fire should still be super effective against ice, because now youre melting the pokemon itself, not its attacks, and melting a living creature would be quite painful..
@verdibyrd2 жыл бұрын
also throwing a rock of ice at a fire lizzar would still hurt it, ice is hard
@pyromaniac0000002 жыл бұрын
@@verdibyrd my thought is that the innate heat of fire type pokemon would melt a large portion of any ice type attack, so theyd be getting hit with slush mostly, which is basically half ice half water, the ice part wont do much but the water would, since fire type. Now if we assume its magical ice that doesnt melt, then yeah its basically just cold rocks which rock is super effective so cold rocks should be too lol.
@pyromaniac0000002 жыл бұрын
@Sniper i still think it should be neutral effective, since it wont be 100% water, and the non water parts wont do much. I think it would be more slush than pure water, and from a gameplay perspective neutral is better. Dont need to give ice a 6th super effective type coverage lol.
@xilano2 жыл бұрын
after trying to clear my snowy driveway with a propane flamethrower two winters ago, I've realized how ineffective fire is against ice
@rainpooper70882 жыл бұрын
And I think Ice should be super effective on Water or at least resist it. Water turns into ice when frozen, which gets rid of its liquid properties and essentially assimilates it. Heck, Freeze Dry exists so it’s not like they’re unaware. Most Water types rely on liquid to the point of needing it to move around, it makes zero sense that they would be strong against something that robs them of their primary movement option. And unlike Fire which was absolute trash and needed a buff in Gen 1, Water has always been a pretty OP type. Not as much as Dragon or Fairy, but still: Only two weaknesses, one of which Water types get free coverage for (because they can all learn Ice moves) and both of which were special types (so Water types with great special bulk like Milotic essentially had no weaknesses because neutral physical moves would do more than moves that were actually super effective), Surf as a free 95 BP STAB move (and Waterfall as a great physical equivalent after the split) that can be taught as many times as you wish and later on, they even got stuff like Scald so the Water types can freaking burn you too. One more weakness wouldn’t have hurt them and it would have solidified Ice as a high risk high reward type to use with high offensive effectiveness, but basically no defensive resistances.

15:10 Charizard, after surviving a critically damaging Ice Beam: Hah! You should have killed me when you had the chance! Jynx, surviving a full-force Flamethrower with her arms out, preparing a second and final attack: So should you. Thank you for doing a Jynx run, it's one of my all time favorite Pokemon that tends to fall by the wayside! Jynx really tore up the scene after a slow start, as to be expected of a Pokemon that gets to have STAB on two of the best moves in the game.

I just thought the ultimate end to these videos would be for Jrose to put himself in the games as a pokemon and now I need somebody to design a Jaybird with a rose ruff. I think he'd be grass and flying. Anyone got any thoughts?

JRose would be half Splash type and half Metronome type if he were a Pokémon and he'd win in under an hour somehow getting Horn Drill or Fissure every time.

My theory is that when the devs made Psychic immune to Ghost, they intended to make Ghost immune to Psychic. That would explain why all the Ghost types in Gen 1 are also Poison, despite that making them weak to Psychic: they were meant to be immune anyway, so it wouldn't matter.

It’s a wonder the game even worked at all. Development was pretty rough and it had to meet a certain release date. Multiplayer battles were a last minute addition too, that’s why there are such broken moves such as wrap and fire spin.

The problem with the Brock split in solo runs is the game's assumption that a large majority of these Pokemon won't be usable until they are met at higher levels and thus have different moves. The lowest level Jynx you can get is like level 12 from the Poliwhirl trade, and that means only leveling up 6 levels to beat Brock for this video. Additionally, a lot of non-first stage Pokemon don't learn any moves until like level 30. If there were a fair way to balance move learning under the assumption all Pokemon were found at level 5, the Brock split would be more fair and the quality of the Pokemon would be judged more objectively. That being said, it can still be considered objective within the confines of this game. My point is that Brock and the original starters are designed in tandem. All 3 get a move that helps them beat him pretty early on, but most Pokemon do not.
@MINTY_FN2 жыл бұрын
Two problems: 1. He'd have to start from scratch 2. it'd be difficult to work out what moves they should or shouldn't have and there's a general lack of low damage early game moves for certain types. You aren't expected to have an ice type before mid-game so the weakest move is Aurora Beam, which is substantially stronger than moves like Ember and Vine Whip you would expect to have around Brock. I think this Gen I specific issue makes FRLG runs interesting comparisons. For example, in FRLG Jynx would have powder snow immediately.

Yea the jynx you can get from the trade is also expected to be gotten after going through diglet cave

@@StealthNinja4577 not mention the revved up XP from being a trade Pokémon. As for turning every Pokémon into a potential starter, I’d say they addressed this issue by creating baby Pokémon, like they did with Jynx in later generations

@@StealthNinja4577 very true. Early era video games really felt like they were made for the sake of being made more than for profit. They’re objectively flawed, but they’re made with love and imagination. @TheR0b19912 жыл бұрын
Would be a strange list Abra would be top easy since he gets past Brock at around level 30 giving it an advantage. All Pokémon who breeze past Brock would have longer times due to being way lower level.

So for anyone curious, trying this run with Jynx’s Gen 2 level up moveset wouldn’t have helped all that much in the early game. It would get the additional benefit of Lick as a starting move, but its next attacking move would’ve been Powder Snow. . . which doesn’t exist in Gen 1 You also likely would’ve needed the levels in order to rank enough hits, but I don’t know
