The paralyzed Dragonite was outspeeding you cause of a glitch (yes, incredible): if a paralyzed Pokemon uses Agility, the game will first reset his speed, and then apply the speed boost. This works the same with burned pokemon using Swords Dance. I know, gen I being gen I.

You know, the one thing I wanna see is: Can you beat Pokemon Red/Blue with JUST an arcanine? At first people might think "PAH, Easy! Arcanine is one of the strongest non legendary pokemon in Gen 1, and one of the strongest Fire Pokemon even to this DAY! That will be a no brainer!" Except you realise that arcanine can NOT learn a single attack by Level up! It only has 4 Move from the get go: Ember, Leer, Roar and Take Down. And the only moves it can learn from TM's are: Toxic (Poison), Dragon Rage (Dragon), Dig (Ground), Reflect (Psycho, not even attack, but can be useful), Fire Blast (Fire) and 11 more Normal Type moves, of which only 8 are actual attacks, and the only noteworthy ones are Skull Bash, which is bad in Gen 1, Swift (kinda useful to hit targets in the air and in the ground), Body Slam (actually useful since it can paralyze enemys... except normal types in gen 1) and Double Edge. So I say an Arcanine Run would be pretty, pretty challenging actually =) Also a fire type with only 2 Fire Moves, and both are Special dispite Arcanine actually being more of a physical Powerhouse, since it's Special Stat is only 80, compared to his 110 Physical attack xD EDIT: I edited the last part. forgot that the special Stat of arcanine in Gen 1 is 80, not 100 xD'

For that Lance fight, the reason Dragonite outsped after Agility even though it's paralyzed is because boosting a stat undoes the loss from a status affliction. So for example, when paralyzed Dragonite used Agility, its speed returned to normal and THEN was doubled. Same thing works with Burn and Swords Dance. I'm honestly a little shocked you didn't know that, I feel like it's less obscure than the Badge Boost Glitch.
@ForeverLaxx3 жыл бұрын
I was also surprised he didn't know not to use Pin Missile against anything it's not x4 strong against that resists Thunderbolt. On average, Thunderbolt always does more damage to neutral targets than a x2 Pin Missile unless it gets a crit or hits at least 3 times. And even then, it has to have incredibly low defense. It's basically only good against Exeggutor and Venusaur.

5:32 i dont know if anyone already said that but the reason why the pikachu went first with the x-speed is the following: as you probably know the ai has to outspeed to use an item first and every ai trainer who has items has a chance to use them each turn (for healing items specific health requirements need to be met except for blaine). If they don't outspeed they'll use the item after your turn, however the speed check of the item use is effected by the priority of the move the pokemon would've used if they didn't use an item instead. So in this case pikachu would have used quick attack, thus going first but because an item was used he got priority on the x speed

When you have a paralyzed enemy in RBY and it uses Agility, it gets to 2x speed, i.e. ignoring the paralysis. However, the paralyzed mon still gets the paralysis chance. It's an incredibly important mechanic in RBY competitive Pokemon - Articuno and Zapdos run it. Someone better at RBY OU can explain it more clearly, but there's my 2¢. @Lotus_RT3 жыл бұрын
Jrose, the reason why the Dragonite was able to out-speed you despite the Paralysis at 38:38 is because it's another quirk of Gen 1. In Gen 1 only, using Agility used to be a solution for regaining the lost speed due to Paralysis. It doesn't remove the Paralysis itself, but it does bring your speed back up to normal level, and on top of that, it would still give you the innate +2 speed that Agility gives normally. In essence, it would be like the normal Paralysis speed drop doesn't even exist. The same thing is true with Swords Dance and the Burn status too; it would bring your attack back to normal, and then immediately double it.

Koga's only a Poison Gym because gym's had to have types. What he's actually meant to do is teach the player about how powerful statuses can be, and he lists his specific ones. Sleep, poison, confusion. His modus operandi is stalling and a death by a thousand cuts. And then end with Explosion if he's backed into a corner. Of course the AI isn't quite up to snuff, and teaching the player types led to the much more easily parsed gimmick of having each trainer be a specific type. They do this even worse with the Elite Four. Lorelei has that Slowbro for Disable, and she's meant to freeze you. In practice she almost never does and she just hits with Water/Ice power. Agatha is the closest to keeping to this trend, with Confuse Ray, Glare and Hypnosis in her wheelhouse. I was sort of hoping with better AI the Gen 3 remakes would do better with it. They kind of do, until they mess up in the postgame and just make everyone monotype. In game trainers are more interesting when they diverge from their one type a little to focus more on an aspect of the game. I wish they did it more like that.

@@knuppel8875 Lol funny thing is video's like this kind of make Pokemon a joke. How easy it is to beat the entire game with one pokemon, no items etc really points out how easy these games were if you had a proper team. I always wondered why the difficulty level of pokemon games seemed so low.
@ZorotheGallade3 жыл бұрын
Jolteon is, meta-wise, the best Eeveelution in gen 1. The fact it managed to beat the entire game while consistently underleveled is a testament to that.

5:33 that was yet another example of gen 1 being gen 1. Basically what happened was, pikachu tried to use quick attack, making it move first, and then Serge overrode that by using an x speed

I hope after finishing all this stuff you will go back to a starter trio, you're much better now and I think it's not fair to compare their runs to awesome runs you're doing right now. Good luck man, your content is great

Dragonite outsped because of a weird mechanic in Gen 1. When a Pokemon is burned or paralyzed, and then uses Agility or Swords Dance, the attack or speed drop from status is annulled.

I think Koga's Gym goes with the Ninja theme rather than just the poison-type theme. So the Pokémon in his gym go with all kinds of status afflictions, poison types can obviously poison you but psychic types can put you to sleep or paralyse you. Also it's pretty deceptive of him to have psychic types there and then have him use poison types. Kinda works for the ninja theme.

Fun Gen1 Fact of the Day: a paralyzed pokemon using agility nullifies the speed drop alongside the 2 stage speed increase. That's how the paralyzed Dragonite outsped you.

Gen 1's Crit system makes sense when you realize the developers were probably thinking that faster pokemon would have a better chance in a real fight of getting in a position where that could hit a critical hit like how a tiger sneaks up and attacks so fast nobody has a chance to defend their neck (the place that would be a "crit" on a person irl) so to conclude when you think about it way to hard the crit system in gen 1 kinda makes sense.

Jrose, for that Dragonite fight. Agility completely negates the Paralysis speed drop. And Paralysis would completely negate Agility speed boost if it happened after an Agility. The game only counts the last stat modifier effect. So going Agility gets you the +2 steps, Paralysis would give you the 1/4 speed, and a 2nd Agility would put you back to +4 steps. The same holds true for Burns and Attack boosts. I think this is a Gen 1 thing only.

It out speeds because of the stat modification glitch. Agility removes the speed drop entirely from gyarados and then boosts the normal agility amount, then it slows jolteon by the paralysis amount
