After finally catching a caterpie, I screamed with excitement that I could finally do damage to Brock. Then Caterpie died. After about a year of playing, I finally discovered the Mart and was SUPER happy when I discovered they sold Poke Balls. So I caught 5 pidgeys. Eventually discovered Mankey, caught it, and it learned Low Kick. After 2 years, I finally learned how to get past Snorlax. I legit asked other kids on the school bus where they were at and how they got to a certain point. I was surprised when most kids were stuck on the Poke Flute like I was. It wasn't until Moltres that I discovered that hurting a pokemon made it easier to catch... I legit told friends to buy 25 pokeballs to catch a Dugtrio in Diglet's cave before this. We didn't get a link cable until after catching Mewtwo and we figured out how to clone almost immediately after getting one because my brother's GBA died midtrade and I lost my Blastoise and we ended up cloning a fricking Caterpie. We tried to copy the process on a couple of duds just to test it and then we realized we could clone so we cloned Mewtwo. Then we battled. Starmie has Alakazam's typing with Gengar's coverage. Definitely a Pokemon to consider.
@james_ford863 жыл бұрын
Starmie does have a dual/typing, so it's not the same as Alakazam. The only moves that can hit Kazam for super effective damage in gen 1 are weak AF bug moves like Pin Missile or Twin Needle. Starmie is weak to electric and grass in addition to being weak to bug. So, it's a bit of a trade-off. With Starmie, you get a slightly slower and less powerful special attacker with more type coverage but more weaknesses. With Kazam, you get less type coverage but only on weakness and are faster and hit harder than Starmie does. Technically, ghost moves were supposed to be super effective against psychic types, but it didn't work out that way in gen 1.
@justinpalmier3 жыл бұрын
@@james_ford86 Although everything you said is accurate - none of it matters. There's no electric or grass pokemon in E4 or in the game that will challenge Starmie. Only concern would be Surge at low levels, but can be skipped and fought at a higher level with minimal time loss. Kazam starts with Confusion. Starmie only has Tackle and Water Gun vs Early Game and specifically Misty's Starmie. That's where Starmie will fall behind, and not be able to catch up despite its superior endgame with Psychic/Blizzard/Thunderbolt/Surf

@@justinpalmier I get what you're saying, but I wasn't referring to just in-game use. I was also including Gen 1 competitive battling. Alakazam was a far superior option to Starmie in that generation. Starmie's not bad, mind you, but Alakazam is faster and hits harder, making it the superior option, especially considering nothing resisted Psychic in Gen 1.

@james_ford863 жыл бұрын
@@justinpalmier No they're not. The OP made no such distinction. In fact, Alakazam is the only Psychic pokemon in Gen 1 that even comes close to Mewtwo's level of power. It doesn't matter if we're talking about in-game or competitive battling. Alakazam is faster and hits harder than Starmie, rendering Starmie the inferior Pokemon. Don't get me wrong. Starmie is still good, especially due to its movepool and typing, but it's not in the same class as Alakazam or Mewtwo, especially in Gen 1.

It's pointless to even think about it, because you're trying to think of a strategy to beat a time that was not at all optimized. Alakazam would never beat Mewtwo because they are both the same type, except Mewtwo has the better stats in every category & movepool. It's just common sense that there's no way Alakazam would ever beat Mewtwo unless it was done intentionally.

@@randumo24 Alakazam gets Dig, whereas Mewtwo does not. I'm not sure if Dig is allowed on a HM slave in this challenge (HM slaves obviously mandatory for progress but not usable in any other way is my understanding) but if it is not then that is the one major advantage Alakazam can have. I won't pretend to know if that's enough or even close but overworld Dig can save a looooooooooot of time. So it is worth at least some modicum of consideration :)

@@Sonicfan640 Lol, being a slightly higher level doesn't put it at actually higher stats. Not to mention, the sheer move diversity has Mewtwo with far more OHKOs. It's not a smug comment, it's a fact. He did a playthrough where he actually tried to do it fast with Mewtwo and did it in under 2 hours lol. The reason it even took the time it did in the first video was because of the insistence of pure minimum battles and no rare candies. Also, both parties have dig moron.
@Tyrannigon644 жыл бұрын
Incidentally, for that last battle, I believe it would've been fine to use the second Toxic against Alakazam; Toxic's damage counter is kinda poorly implemented (you're probably aware of how it interacts with Leech Seed), and apparently a Pokemon that heals by Rest won't have its damage counter reset, so it's likely that healing by Full Restore won't reset it either. As such, using Toxic would've just continued where it left off, doing significant damage.

All around good stats, Metronome to beat Brock easily in the beginning, an excellent movepool consisting of STAB normal, Thunderbolt, Ice Beam/Blizzard and Psychic, and most importantly, in the fast level up group which is one huge advantage over Mewtwo. I did a run with Clefable and beat the game in 3:30 (keep in mind that Im not experienced at speed running). I'm sure Jrose will be able to beat Mewtwo's record using Clefable.

i love how you combo attacked with Toxic, Recover and Reflect. Tho, i'd never go that route myself. I'd instead have ice beam, Electro/Fire/Ice Punch, attacks like that to take out anything immune or resistant to the psychic; As i've never liked doing in battle status effects on that generation much, only the heal from recover i would also take, simply due to having to keep up one pokemon in this strat. so it'd be most likely Ice beam and Either electro or fire punch, i'd replace the toxic and the reflect with. Good Video man!
@james_ford863 жыл бұрын
Except you can't do that. Alakazam never gets Ice Beam, nor does it get the Elemental punches in generation I, when this playthrough takes place. Outside of Psychic, Psybeam, Confusion, and Psywave, Alakazam literally learns no other damaging special moves in R/B/Y. It gets access to some physical moves, like Mega Punch, Mega Kick, Body Slam, Take Down, Double-Edge, Hyper Beam, Submission, Counter, Seismic Toss, Skull Bash, and Tri Attack, but Alakazam's awful ATK stat renders most of these moves, except for Counter and Seismic Toss, useless. Alakazam doesn't get access to the Elemental Punches until Gen II. Jrose's strategy was correct for the generation it was played in.
@fredericschatz53793 жыл бұрын
@@james_ford86 I agree, I noticed my mistake when going back on an actual safe file. Indeed, tri attack still is physical and the punches aren't tm yet but only learned by hitmonlee's brother. The ice beam can be taught by tm or blizzard or something along those lines but it s rather pointless to aim for alakazam to these attacks. Dream eater works with hypnosis but is no better than any of the classic psychic moves it learns, the healing absorbtion does very little for an alakazam.
@james_ford863 жыл бұрын
@@fredericschatz5379 A few things you're still incorrect about: 1. Alakazam does NOT have, nor has it ever had, access to the move Ice Beam, whether we're talking via level-up or TM. Sure, Ice Beam is a TM in most generations, but Alakazam couldn't learn it, even if you tried to use that TM on it. So, talking about Ice Beam in relation to an Alakazam moveset in any generation is a moot point, as it cannot learn the move. It can't learn it via level-up, TM, or breeding. Please reference Bulbapedia if you need proof. 2. While Alakazam does get access to Dream Eater, it does NOT get access to Hypnosis or any other sleep inducing move. So, yeah, teaching Dream Eater would be pointless for Alakazam, especially considering it already has a reliable health restoring move in Recover, but also because it doesn't have a way to put the opponent to sleep in the first place. In order to use Dream Eater on Alakazam, you'd first have to put the opponent to sleep with a different Pokemon, then swap to Alakazam and pray the opponent stays asleep. That said, if these conditions were met, due to Alakazam's massive special attack, Dream Eater would do a lot of damage and probably restore almost as much, if not more, health as Recover does, depending on the opponent it's used on.

Incredible run. What I find interesting is that Alakazam actually did seem to struggle less---it made little sense to me until I looked at the EXP tables. Mewtwo levels far slower than Alakazam, leading to Mewtwo having arguably less stats when it matters. Additionally, Mewtwo never got to learn Recover. Alakazam had an absolutely brutal strategy of Toxic + Recover to utilize. Even adding Reflect at the end to effectively make it a physical wall too. Besides, only knowing Psychic offensive moves in Gen 1 isn't a bad issue. It's the best type. Gen 4 Dragon isn't even as good as Gen 1 Psychic. I find your assessment at the end a bit interesting on Machamp or Starmie. Machamp has Submission, Rock Slide, and Earthquake, but it can't use the Badge Boost Glitch. So Gengar is covered at least, but it's very slow. Starmie has similar stat distribution, but worse overall, than Alakazam and Mewtwo. It has a great movepool, but it's going to struggle dearly against Alakazams and it will never have a chance to OHKO Gengar despite outspeeding it. I don't think any non-Legendary is dethroning Alakazam---personally I found it unreal that Alakazam was that close to dethroning Mewtwo, much less that it handily defeated all of the Birds.
