May 11th 2020. Jimmy was minding his own business in Diglett Cave when a trainer with a Geodude wreaked havoc on all the Diglett present. Now, nearly 2 years to the day, Jimmy has evolved and along with Doug Trieyo is trying to avenge his fainted brethren.

Rules and Explanations
Rules: (1) Only use the one Pokémon in Battle, others for HMs are fine. (2) No Items in battle (3) No Glitches* (4) Set Mode (5) No saving in the Elite Four (6) No evasion moves
Badge Boost "Glitch" Explanation: When you collect odd numbered badges the game boosts a stat by 12.5%. Brock gives ATK, Surge DEF, Koga SPE, and Blaine SPC (in game text is wrong). When any of your stats are modified (even by you using a move like Withdraw, or your opponent using Leer) the badge boosts are re-applied. So If you use Swords Dance, you also gain *an additional 12.5% in Speed/Defence/Special (on top of the 12.5% you were supposed to be getting). When you level up, the game corrects this error, and only the non-glitch 12.5% remains. Because of how difficult it is to avoid, I've allowed for it to be exploited, since opponents will spam Leer/Growl anyways, and this way battles are less random. Red/Blue are extremely buggy, so there's always going to be some glitches present, and because of how unavoidable this one is, it is allowed in runs, and considered more like a special Generation 1 mechanic as opposed to a glitch.

Hey Jrose, I just wanted to give a shout out to your narration. I often get migraines which make it hard to look at screens, so I’ll put on one of your videos to listen to while my meds kick in. I really appreciate how clear you are with what’s happening- it’s easy enough for me to follow along with just the audio, but your excitement and the suspenseful moments still carry over. I know a lot of work goes into editing the footage (and I do go back to watch it too), but I think it’s also not an easy task to create engaging audio with good cadence and style. Many thanks for all your hard work! From Canada

I'd really love to see a solo run for Raichu. Not because I think it'll be good, far from it. In fact I think it might be the only fully evolved Pokèmon that will rank lower than its pre-evolution. Pikachu's problem was that it couldn't do anything to Brock because it can't actually attack Brock until it gets to level 16 and it learns Quick Attack. Raichu on the other hand doesn't learn Quick Attack and will absolutely have to use Struggle to damage Brock.

Good ol' Dugtrio. When a friend let me borrow the game back in 1998, I ended up just wandering around his already completed game. Most of our runs get us used to a combination of speed+attacking stat being the best way to obtain victory in most confrontations. Diglett and Dugtrio solo runs teach us instead that extremism is bad and we sometimes need other stats too :p.

Uhhhh no. In the speedrun community, Dugtrio is likely one of the top ten pokes. Not a joke. This boils down to bad routing and poor execution. Nothing against JRose, but this was a poor showing.

What routing would you have used? And what would have helped against Lorelei since even Nidoking speedruns end at around level 50. I am genuinely curious since there doesn't seem to be an easy out here. Hyper Beam isn't really accessible and EQ/SE Rock Slide does more than Double Edge. Fissure and Double Team is banned in these runs. I can't see a way that you can do a routing that would break the brick wall here, especially in a run that doesn't abuse the X Accuracy OHKO strat.

Jrose: "Let's mimic amnesia to boost our special stat" (and by extension apply the badge boosts to make Earthquake more powerful) Also Jrose: *uses Slash which ignores stat boosts* This doesn't really change how inconsistent the first battle against Lorelei was, but I thought it was amusing. Edit: Do correct me if Earthquake would deal less damage due to Slowbro using withdraw. I only thought about it after writing this comment.

I'm calculating that dugtrio's slash would be better on average than eq after 3 withdraws. Slash has 70 base power and does x2 damage with crit. it always ignores def boosts, so it always does 140 base power. I'm not sure if it gets the intended single 12.5% badge boost because of the crit, but I know it does not get any additional badge boosts. If this is true, then slash's base power is instead 157, after rounding down. Eq has 100 basepower and has a 1.5x STAB effect. I think the badge boost glitch is an additive effect, so that after 3 amnesias, there is a 12/8 multiplicative factor instead of 9/8. If that is correct, then eq has 225 base power with no crit. Gen 1 dugtrio has a 120/512, or 23.4% chance to crit, which does x2 damage but reduces the badge boost multiplier down to 9/8 for an effective 337 base power after rounding down. After accounting for crit chance, the expected value of eq's base power is 251.25. Each withdraw boosts slowbro's defense by 50%, so after one withdraw the non-crit effective base power is down to 150, which is worse than slash's base power. The 337 base power crit eq ignores the defense buffs. In this scenario, the expected value of eq's base power is 193.8. We can repeat this for each defense buff to see when eq's expected value drops lower than slash's expected value of 157. 2 withdraws puts eq's expected base power at 164.7, and 3 withdraws puts eq's expected base power at 147.9. So after 3 withdraws, dugtrio is better off using slash instead of eq.
@IamNumberE
@IamNumberE 2 жыл бұрын
The badge boosts are applied directly to the stat, not by stat stages like growl or agility's effects. Raising your stats in this way wouldn't be affected by a crit because it's raised by the badge boosts pointwise and not by a multiplier when calculation is done

It feels like a lot of the big Pokémon KZbin channels aren't actually playing the games that much these days and are more concerned with reporting news, leaks, and rumors. Pikasprey isn't a challenge player per se, he's more into variety but has a lot of "alternate reality pokémon" playlists as he likes to call the romhacks. He has two channels and in the Yellow one he has "lock" challenges where he likes to think how to give the worst possible save to someone else to play. Blue channel is his VOD, since he streams at Twitch. If you're still reading, I'd also recommend the Imported Cheese channel. He's more into glitch hunting but he does challenges in Pokémon Showdown, using teams from Patreon and his chat when he streams. He also makes tierlists. Lastly, I vouch for Paraspectre. He plays challenges in the TCG and comments about the main line games in a very "movie review" way, while putting his own memories (a bit like Scott), which is neat. I actually heard about this one from MahDryBeard and I only knew about this one from JRose11 so they're a very cool, wholesome community! Here are some honourable mentions: ChaoticMeatball makes Catch'em all Challenges, PaPaSea makes Nintended runs. They sometimes collab with other players with small channels that's worth checking out. CHAZZY is into Elite 4 Monotype runs, very competitive insight.

I think at the end of this video it really answers this question. Jrose says he considers all possible outcomes when finally deciding on the rank, not just how the actual run went. The story is about the run that we see, but the rank is about all runs in general, that was my interpretation. Yeah I'd love to see a whole run through again of optimal runs, but that's up to Jrose and who knows, maybe Ruby/Sapphire or FireRed/Leaf Green will be the next series.

Here's something that might help you: Lorelei's Dewgong will use Rest on its second turn 80% of the time. How does that help you? Well, if you have Dig or Fly, that means you can dodge its first attack, then damage it so when it rests, it will fall asleep, that gives you 3 extra turns to knock it out or set up your badge boosts. This is like, the one advantage Dig has over Earthquake, the fact you can get some free turns on the Lorelei battle, it's not guaranteed, but hey she's the first you have to fight, so it's easy to reset if you need to rely on it.
