Against Lorelei when the Confusion was healed in the code it applied the effects of having your status condition cleared. As a result, the temporary modification to your speed from the Paralysis was cleared. The game never checks if it is clearing the correct stat debuff since it never expects a Pokemon to have multiple status effects. Confusion being stackable with other status effects is an oversight in the code when it comes to this.

14:47 "I don't even know if that [Self-Destruct] would've knocked me out at full health." Koga's level 43 Weezing has no DVs and IV of 9 in Attack, so the actual stat is of 90. At 13:43 your Cloyster had a Defense of 139. When using Self-Destruct, the damaged Pokémon has its defense halved. Plugging these in the damage formula: Damage = ((( (2*Level)/ 5 ) * Power * (Attack/ Defense)/ 50) + 2) * range Damage = ((( (2*43)/ 5 ) * 130 * (90/ 69)/ 50) + 2) * [0.85, 1] Damage = ( (86/5) * 130 * 1.39 )/ 50) + 2) * [0.85, 1] 39 to 46 HP of damage So, the answer is, no, Weezing's Self-Destruct would not have knocked out Cloyster if it was at full health, but it definitely would in the first battle.

@@nautgamingnautgaming9949 I mean, it can learn thunderbolt (dealing with lorelei and gyarados), psychic (bruno/agatha), surf (some of bruno/rival), and ice beam/blizzard (lance and venusaur). It's versatility in terms of typing is incredible, and alakazam managed great with a worse base attack stat. The most obvious special walls happen to have STABs that it already resists, and most of them have terrible physical bulk, so a 75 attack stat doesn't seem too bad. It even learns multiple solid ice and normal moves, so he has the option to juggle when to learn moves for specific encounters while not sacrificing that type for the rest of the run. EG, start E4 with psychic, reflect, surf and thunderbolt, using reflect to weaken some of Lorelei's bulkier mons' physical attacks and Lance's aerodactyl; replace psychic with blizzard after Agatha, and replace reflect with double-edge after Lance for the rival's alakazam, having used tri-attack for pre-E4 special walls and ice beams as necessary. Between reflect, great speed and special, and super effective attacks against almost everything, I think it'd probably either outspeed and one-shot or outlast any late game mon that really threatens it (dewgong might be tricky due to not having the opportunity to set up reflect on an earlier pokemon and having take down, but iirc it's hard coded to rest on turn 2 anyway? not sure what level starmie would need to be to one-shot it with thunderbolt). Early game, Misty might be a slog, and Surge is probably tricky what with starmie being weak to electric and having no super effective moves (or even good neutral moves, honestly; might be worth delaying that one even if it means backtracking without fly latter), but once he gets to Celadon he can make a beeline for ice beam and psychic, and then starmie has super effective moves against all the remaining gym leaders except Sabrina, for which he can use tri attack; base 75 attack isn't *that* bad against a combined hp/defence of 100, especially with a decent crit rate and psychic resistance. That said, I kinda hope Cloyster keeps its ranking; mah boi could use some more accolades

I love your videos and am very happy that “wait and see” is panning out. I have one piece of criticism for this video and possibly moving on- Do not reset when you freeze an opponent, every time you choose ice beam over surf on a neutral to both Pokémon is because you go for the freeze chance. I understand that Erica is a different case because super effective, but it is still an advantage for ice type Pokémon. Just like in other videos when you reset because of a lucky crit. How lucky is it when it comes from Jolteon or Mewtwo, or eventually electrode? Just my opinion. Love your videos keep making them!
@Namingway2482 жыл бұрын
i agree with the sentiment that gen 1 crits aren't truly "luck." they scale off of a stat that can be both trained and altered at will, meaning that the level of control the player has over causing them is high enough that I would consider it more strategy than luck. in electrodes case its not impossible to run into a situation where its crit chance is higher than the accuracy of some moves, but a move hitting would never be cause for reset in this kind of run.
@Skylerrelyks932 жыл бұрын
@@Namingway248 it’s based off of base speed, not the speed stat value. So it can’t be altered. Still i agree that a crit shouldn’t call for a reset, but these are his vids and he wouldn’t be satisfied with a crit win if he was on the ropes and he thinks he could do it better.
@TheBlueWizzrobe2 жыл бұрын
You could effectively treat the freeze chance as another chance for a "critical hit" of sorts. With base 70 speed, Cloyster has a 13.67% chance of getting a critical hit on any move. With a 10% chance of freezing on ice beam, the probability of getting either a freeze or a critical hit on any ice beam is about 22.3%. This is about the same chance that a Pokemon with base 115 speed gets a critical hit on a move. Those odds aren't bad.

Apparently the game only has one command for removing status effects and it doesn’t understand that confusion is stackable with things like burn and paralysis, so when confusion wears off by itself it also cures the stat drops of the aforementioned status conditions.
@dialga52 жыл бұрын
Thanks for doing these challenges man. They're fun to watch and no matter where in the series you always explain so everyone can understand it essentially.
@tobiasmills96472 жыл бұрын
34:45 maybe your speed was dropped by paralysis, but still boosted enough by badges to tie with Lapras? Or as the critical hit ignored stat changes, maybe it overwrote the debuff from paralysis? I dunno, just spitballing
@velvetbutterfly2 жыл бұрын
When stats are changed in gen1 (I think at all, though it may just be because badge boost messed with speed too? Someone should test without the speed badge) it ignored the -Speed from paralysis
@nintendofan90012 жыл бұрын
@@velvetbutterfly It would make more sense for it to be because of the badge boost, apparently a speed/attack boost of any kind removes the negative stat effects of paralysis/burn... Apparently in this case though it was related to confusion being lifted and removing the negative effects of paralysis for the turn, explained in more detail by another commenter
@doritosareawesome47652 жыл бұрын
It's because the confusion was cleared up and that made glitchy gen 1 code clear up the speed decrease from paralysis

Also, I can tell that the video production and editing quality has gone up the last few videos, really great to see, even though the old ones are still great as well. Glad you finally got an editor to help you with these.

What a amazing run. Cloyster is a really great pokemon, I knew that ice pokes were going to be good at solo runs, but holy moly I wasn't expecting that level of destruction.

I just found this series and this is great! I'd love to see a run with Tentacruel and possibly Hypno as I believe they may have potential to dethrone Mewtwo due to typing and available movepool at the right points of the game

26:42 Don’t the tail whips mean that you could go for _even more_ than six withdraws, since the tail whip brings your defense back down before it reaches the maximum?

I'm confused by the final placement. Mew, Zapdos, and Articuno all had lower times and did it at a lower level. Gyarados was one level lower but 2 minutes faster. That much similarity comes down to rng. but the top 6 are all clearly better.
@housemd007mw22 жыл бұрын
I totally agree
@DemonRaticate2 жыл бұрын
For the Zapdos... it was the Brock fight and Bruno... yeah Zappy had trouble with Bruno. Moltres was most likely due to the fact that it had Fire Spin as the only move it could use until Fire Blast and Fly, but it did get Agility so we could abuse the glitch. Still that early game and having to rely on a 70% accurate attack to get much done hurt it in rankings as it added a ton of RNG to the mix. Articuno was the most solid of the three. It abused mimic and was tanky enough to abuse Amnesia and Recover. It bodied everything but Agatha... and that becomes a problem. Pokemon with purely special movesets need either Amnesia or the ability to abuse the Badge Boost Glitch to be able to make her consistent. The top of the top are pokemon that are attempting to do this at as close to MINIMUM battles as possible. Gyarados... couldn't... he actually needed to go back and grind. Jrose is also attempting to fix his human error of taking on a few battles a bit too early which cost him time. Done perfectly, I think Cloyster actually saves more than enough time to outspeed Mew by a minute. Hope this helps with the understanding.

The return of regular jrose is great. Poketube is in its prime. This was well routed, well put together, well scripted. Looking forward to more
@carl48892 жыл бұрын
I knew Cloyster had the right stuff. How about it's brother Dewgong? No insane defense or Withdraw, but it has higher special, can learn Body Slam and starts with Headbutt, and you can always get the badge boosts from Mimic?
@nerdstop50252 жыл бұрын
Dewgong... is PAINFULLY average.
@carl48892 жыл бұрын
I disagree. It has a bunch of things going for it that makes it well suited for powering through Gen 1. Starting with Aurora Beam and Headbutt alone make it a monster in the early game.

Outspeeding Lapras at 34:50 was definitely interesting. Possibility 1: You were speed tied. Lapras outspeeding the past 2 turns was just luck. Possibility 2: The speed calculations were different from the previous 2 turns. The one thing of note I see for possibility 2 would be that this turn immediatly followed a critical hit. Crits negate stat changes. I've assumed this quirk was restricted to damage calculations, but am now willing to consider it applies to all stats, and the stats reset after initiative is determined for the following Pokemon. If correct (I doubt it) this would result in Pokemon that are normally faster, but is slower due to stat changes to attack first on the turn following a critical hit, but would have no impact on damage calculations except for the critical hit attack. Which might be what we just witnessed. This is raw speculation. The best way to test it would probably be to go up against Lance using Victreebell, Vileplume or Venusaur that's faster than Lance's Dragonair/Dragonite, but not twice as fast. Hit Dragonair/Dragonite with a Razor Leaf crit, then if they use agility, see if you still outspeed them. If you do, that strongly supports this hypothesis.

Jrose you're totally right about the Badge Boost Mechanic*. It's totally fair game in Gen1 and there's no reason to restrict it from yourself.
