Considering how Vanillaware was basically "all in" with Unicorn Overlord, I'm glad it's doing well.

It’s remarkable that Vanillaware and Nihon Falcom have managed to survive as independent “double-A” game developers. Hopefully, they stay independent.

Pretty solid month September 2024 was. One suggestion, I'm a little surprised no mention of Ys X coming out on the 25th. I understand no news about it but at the same time it would be a nice reminder
@TheKisekiNut4 сағат бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion, but I keep these videos focused on the news that's announced in the month rather than centring them on releases. Backlog Battle and DavidVinc often do those types of vids, so they're good spots to check out.

Video game characters, both male and female should absolutely be attractive. Western culture (specifically in media) is bemoaning beauty and attractiveness as horrible and bigoted and most recently as conservative and right winged (best insult ever, thank you.) Media is more fun when its full of beautiful people. But more and more in the west characters are drawn as bland or ugly as possible in the name of "inclusion". I don't want to see myself in a game, and I don't want the media I consume to be full of ugly (both inside and out) people. Games and movies and TV don't need to reflect the real world 1 to 1. If it does, then there is no reason to watch a show or enjoy a game because it's no different than life. We play games and get engrossed in a good show because it's not real, they allow us to experience something new and different and I personally, would rather enjoy that experience with attractive characters. Or at least characters who fit the vibe and story.

I’m sure it makes me an “ist-phobe” in the eyes of some, but the sort of heavy-handed censorship in the Dragon Quest remake is so repugnant to me that I won’t be buying it even on deep discount. Vote with your wallet.

if you are bothered by type a or b as gender options you are probably just a snowflake
@DangerCrow2 сағат бұрын
“Repugnant?” What is repugnant about a few extremely minor changes that will have little to no effect on the actual game?
@R.Williams2 сағат бұрын
Most censorship is so minor you'd not notice except the few people that go crazy over it. Though if you want to deny yourself the chance to experience a good game because of a few pixels of changes, you certainly have that right.

I am so glad that the Japanese have finally spoken up and told us why we see so many changes in JRPG's. Is the west again trying to ruin Japanese media.
@TheNameIsSR3 сағат бұрын
Yeah I doubt it's actually 'western regulations' since the Japan exclusive Dragon Quest 10 uses type A/B genders too and plenty of western games still release with a male/female label when building characters. If you want to know something very real that's ruining Japanese media it's the working culture and lack of unionization among Japanese animation studios which leave many creatively and emotionally drained.
@RJRedtail2 сағат бұрын
@@TheNameIsSR Correct. It's ultimately the management making these decisions not the nebulous "West". Culture War BS is just a distraction from the real problems in the games industry. If devs had collective bargaining power they could lobby for more creative freedom instead of having to conform to whatever the suits think is most PR-friendly.
@leonsatelier2 сағат бұрын
west trying to ruin japanese media? you do know trans people also exist in japan right? and we get called snowflakes 🙄
@jclosed2516Сағат бұрын
@@TheNameIsSR Well - Seeing that Western (mostly American, sorry to say) people get their panties in a knot when there is even a choice (not forced or anything) in a game that allows to choose something beyond the "normal" straight male or female "standards" is not really encouraging I guess. I think they want to avoid any controversy whatsoever. Look at the "wokiewokie" hysteria around some "suggestive" scars in the character builder of the new Dragon Age game (that is only present an option amongst many options by the way, and in no way forced), and I can understand why they think people in the West are complete weirdo's. Can you blame them?

Actually falcom recently released an update sky remake won't be in house anymore 😂
@jclosed2516Сағат бұрын
Well - If they want to port the game to the PC, and want to make it a good port, they need Durante (or Peter Thoman to use his real name) to work on the game. Durante has saved many games from failure. I only have to name Ys VIII - Lacrimosa Of Dana, that was in a "not so good" state before Durante made it playable. So - I do not think they have enough knowledge "in house" for a really good PC port...
@namelessgary6432 сағат бұрын
Referring to releasing DQ3 in the west, most normal people won't be bothered if you call them Male or Female. in fact, a large portion of us would praise you for it. There are only two genders, male and female. So having a male or female protagonist is beautiful and wonderful thing.

Well, I'm never buying a Level 5 game ever again. They're destroying the planet.
@a232-i9v2 сағат бұрын
Wait so is the implication with the Dragon Quest stuff that they would be forced into a higher ESRB rating category if they put Male / Female? Is that a real thing? You should know the difference by age 4 let alone 13, how the hell is that age-relevant.
@RJRedtail2 сағат бұрын
It's just a Square Enix thing. They did the same thing with DQX which didn't even release in the west.
@a232-i9v2 сағат бұрын
@@RJRedtail Oh fair. They kinda made it sound like it was a "to be able to release in the West at all" issue, which seemed kinda odd if it's their Japanese company doing it, but I guess they're doing it for perceived "western standards" / in line with their DEI department so, I suppose that makes sense.
@AnneHighfillСағат бұрын
I got the impression that the age rating thing in particular was related to the change in character designs.
@mintman35332 сағат бұрын
I'm so tired of westerners forcing these changes and values on Japanese developers. It's so disrespectful. I'm not not even against extra customization in games, I'm just against changing people's artistic vision. I swear it's like we're back in the 90s when people were panicking over games because of the dumbest reasons again.

@leonsatelier2 сағат бұрын
i dont usually comment on videos but reading the comments on this one made me just... disappointed. as a nonbinary individual i don't understand why people care so much about the type a or b thing. you can still play as a male character it is just worded differently to make the experience more accommodating for people like me. i will probably get dogpiled by transphobes but really who cares. i don't complain when i have to pick male or female so why should cis people complain about type a or b. we get called snowflakes but who is really the snowflake here

These were just a couple of old guys complaining about change. Change does not ruin the medium as a previous poster declared. Change is inevitable and welcome.
