Converting old grapevines can be an effective way of using an established root system and change varieties in just one year. In this video I show my favorite techniques to graft old grapevines, in the field, along with some tips to increase graft success. If you enjoy my work, LIKE and leave a COMMENT to help me make more. I will try to answer as many comments as I can.

I'm in the Niagara grape growing area of Canada. I get a most 100% success rate now thanks, for the most part, from your videos. We get some really cold weather in winter so I've learned that graft timing is important to get the union to fully heal prior to winter. My best success seems to be right after the vine has finished the early spring push and the daytime temperatures are in the mid 20s. I get about 1 meter of growth in the graft year and extensive growth in 2nd year. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge.

I was lucky to get hold of a few scions that I would like to use to graft some old grapevines (30-40yo). The best time for grafting according to you seems to be late spring which is ~April here in Germany. I'd be keen to learn how to properly store the scions for such a long time (4-5month) especially as I don't have enough space in my fridge. Maybe you can make a video on how to harvest and store them.

@@JSacadura Hola Jaime.

Looking forward to your fig videos. I tried a bunch of fig grafts this year without success, I suspect my root stock wasn't "awake" enough and the scionwood died before the root stock woke up due to a very cold April.
@JSacadura2 жыл бұрын
Hi, Don. Best results with figs require that the rootstock is fully awake. Over here I have very mild springs so I can graft since March, but I tend to wait and graft in April or even May in some years. Whip and Tongue is one of the best options for higher success rate but its tricky to perform with the fig scion wood (which most of the times if hollow). I would recommend the modified cleft graft in your case. Best of luck with your future grafts.

I have had a lot of grapes from one vine last year but the birds ate hald of them even though had been covers with the gift bags. The birds cut the grapes fruits the whole bunches down to the ground then open the bags...very smart birds.
