Rooting Fig Cuttings | Rooting in the Summer using the “Traditional Method”

The easiest way to root fig cuttings in the summer without problems. The “traditional method” of rooting protects the cuttings from the sun and high temperatures, conserves moisture, and guarantees a good plant development.
The plants can be potted up after a few months or they can be left until the autumn to grow a bit more before removing them from the soil.
Rooting indoors with other rooting methods with high temperatures is usually a problem because the combination of moisture and heat leads to the development of mold. That problem doesn’t exist when rooting outdoors with this rooting method.
This propagation method can be used for most types of plants that root well from cuttings.

I stuck a fig cutting in a shaded spot in a vegetable raised bed in June this year. I'm curious to see how well it rooted out (it was a little bit of a casual experiment for me). I scraped it pretty well and put some rooting hormone on it so hopefully it's really nicely developed. Has a few small leaves that look fairly healthy. I'll probably trim some of the nearby plants so that it gets a little more sun and can harden up before I try to put it in a pot.

Beware that, sometimes, the cuttings might have leaves and few or no roots yet. So, i would be patient and wait at least 3 months before trying to remove it from the ground.

@JSacadura
@JSacadura 3 жыл бұрын
Hola, Manuel.

Hello, I have had fig cuttings in tall ice coffe cups for 2 months now and a lot of them have leaves and lots of thin orange roots in the cups. They have to be watered it seems every three days which I put very little water and mostly mist them. What size pots are those in the video and should I use these kind or can I use say a plastic coffee can or a plastic 1 gal. ice crean tub ? Should I wait till the cup gets root bound before transplanting? Thank you !
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 4 жыл бұрын
I would wait until the roots get stronger to transplant them to a bigger container. I use tall 1, 2, and 4 liter pots but you can use almost anything as a pot for plants, provided you make a few holes on the bottom so excess water can escape. When up-potting, opaque containers will be better, as the roots don't like light. Good luck with your new plants.

Hello. I live in Vietnam. In my country, there is this kind of hardship. I bought its seed online. I planted the seed and sprouted 3 plants. I took his branches and cutted them in an old paint bucket and covered them tightly. after 2 weeks they germinate and take root. I planted them into small cups with a decaying grass substrate. But my fig type doesn't seem like yours. and I have some videos of it growing on my youtube channel. love from vietnam!

@JSacadura 4 жыл бұрын
Hi. Thanks for your comment. Beware that propagating fig from seed is not a good idea. Most likely you will get a caprifig that will produce inedible figs - see my video on the subject of fig pollination - kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZTXenmhi8aNh9U - min 5.48 . Figs are usually propagated by cuttings or air layers, not by seeds.

Excellent video, still a little surprised at the one that rotted, considering the size and great quality of those cuttings and the same conditions , I am still working on my method during the winter indoors , doing better just have to improve on up potting step ,thats where I have lost some
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 5 жыл бұрын
The cuttings i am preparing in the beginning of the video were all of different varieties and i have found that some varieties are a bit more hard to root than others, independently of the size and quality of the cuttings. Some robust cuttings cause problems while some skinny ones of easier to root varieties, develop roots easily. The up potting step is the most delicate when rooting indoors. Most cuttings stop growing for a while and the roots might have a tough time adapting to other mediums.
@Nicola050459
@Nicola050459 5 жыл бұрын
@@JSacadura yes I get frustated because I wait until the cutting gets a nice root ball, try to take some or most of the mix with it, water just enough and wait, when nothing happens I get impatient and remove the cutting and what drives me crazy is the sometime the roots are fine, nice and white and growing and nothing happens on top, no new leaves, tips etc even after few weeks...
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 5 жыл бұрын
That's the shock of the up potting. It tends to do that and we have to be patient. That's why i like this method as we can leave the cuttings in the ground, until the plants have developed enough to resist that transplant shock. If we plan to keep the tree in the ground permanently, we can even try to root it in the definitive place.

@JSacadura
@JSacadura 4 жыл бұрын
If the conditions are right, Yes, they will take. But, in late spring, when temperatures start to get too high, they are the first to dehydrate and dry out, so I tend to use dormant cuttings as much as I can.

There are some guys in Ebay from Portugal that sell cuttings, but i can't vouch for them or the varieties they sell. Your best bet is asking your sister to buy young, inexpensive fig trees and send you the trees or cuttings, from reputable nurseries, like Vivieros Castromil and Viveiros Albar (both have websites with information).

It also depends on the shape the cuttings are when you decide to store them. I only store cuttings that are healthy. If not, they will only deteriorate further in the fridge. Its best to try to root them right away (indoors, in controlled environment) or trying to use them to graft (sometimes its the only way to save the varieties).

my experience with rooting hormone powder was that it works almost 100% with and not very good without. I ve tried honey too. Didn’t work. I only tried this on air layerings though. On young figtrees (1-2 years) and old ones (12+ years)
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 4 жыл бұрын
In my experience rooting hormones speed up the process of rooting. They are not absolutely essential with all trees though, as many cuttings will root well without them. They just take longer to root, which might increase the chances of rotting, fungus and other problems.
