Hi, by any chance, do you have any ideas how I can graft an yucca plant?:) What I am trying to do is to make it branch more, below the main crown. My plan is to use a small yucca branch, that I will graft into the main trunk, this way I hope that I will have several levels of leaves. thanks :)

I very much enjoy that you show the failures of why graphs don't take. I personally think that your video on the techniques, speaking through the processes and why they don't take, to me is the most educational video and only helps in understanding graghting. I have reviewed a lot if graghting videos, yours would have to be the most interesting. Thankyou

Thank you for your videos, they are very informative. With your help I've successfully grafted some pakistan mulberry scions I collected from trees I bought and planted, and this year grafted them to the wild mulberry growing behind my house and at the irrigation canal adjacent my property. I also collected grape scions from vines I planted 7 years ago at my dad's house and grafted them to my 5 year old grape I planted here. This year bought several fruit trees so this winter I will be taking many many scions and will try to graft onto the native wild grapes and the wild pear trees here. I will also be trying to graft the other wild mulberry once they go dormant and I can chop them down to eye level. Thanks again for all your help, this wisdom you share makes for a very fulfilling hobby, where you can literally appreciate the fruits of your labor.

Thanks to God and you just did my first successful graft using the whip and tongue! I tried many times( sweet cherry onto sour cherry) and failed many many times but one of them finally took and i couldn't be any happier!! I was curious when to take the tape off but i see you let it get to a good size first and then take it off. Thank you!
@JSacadura

Great job! Regarding tape... As I said to another viewer, I usually keep rubber based tape on for several months - it won't strangle the graft, and helps to secure it and protect the healing area. However, when using more rigid materials, like raffia, to tie the graft, you need to cut them before they damage the tissues and weaken the graft area. In some cases of vigorous growth they need to be cut when the graft is 3 months old or earlier. After removing the ties, it's also important to stake the new growth during the first year or the graft might brake with strong winds.

You put out super good videos, thanks again for that. Also appreciate that you clearly point out grafts for dormant scions and grafts and timing for live scion (bud grafting.) Beginners like me need clear instructions! We live in town, have a small yard, and I just have 2 pear espaliers (one is 5 yrs old, with 10 cordons and 7 varieties; 1 in the 3rd year with 10 cordons with 8 varieties) and 1 apple espalier (6 yrs old, now 8 cordons witih 8 varieties), but I keep trying to build on what I have. This year, using your techniques and advice, I did 2 new apples cordons and 4 pear, and they all took. It's a wonderful feeling when you see those buds pop through the parafilm! Anyway, no one around here (in northern Idaho in the US) that I know of does grafting or espalier, so I've had to rely on KZbin primarily, and your videos are the best I've found. Great job! PS, do you have recommendations on how to handle pest like pear mites. I try to not use harsh chemicals.
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 2 жыл бұрын
That's quite impressive! I'm glad my videos helped. Regarding mites - the use of horticultural oils might help to control them (reduces hatching success and kills insects it covers) and they are less toxic than chemically based pesticides. Also, they degrade quickly and leave no toxic residues. Dormant oil applied in the winter, just before buds open in the spring (don't apply when cold weather is expected) and summer oil (lower concentration), to apply in the summer (be sure to follow the manufacturer recommendations).

First rule to graft success is having a healthy rootstock and healthy scions to graft. If the grafting material is poor, most graft will fail. Better luck next time.

I find your videos very helpful but still fail at almost every single attempt of grafting, independent of the grafting method used. Could the issue be too much pressure when tying the scion tissue to the rootstock? Or could it be that I work too slow and the tissues are oxidized before they come into contact? I noticed quite a rapid oxidation of the rootstock tissue. Is there an estimate of a workable timeframe for grafting? Thank you for uploading these instructional videos, they keep me trying to achieve successful grafts.
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 2 жыл бұрын
Oxidation can be a problem regarding graft success. If I were you I would start with pears or apples. They are usually more forgiving and very good to learn. And make sure you protect the grafts well. Its one of the most important points! Thanks for the comment.

@@deg6788 you don't need any towels. Make sure you graft after the buds broke, the cambium layer is aligned and no visible gaps, tape the whole scion, run a rubber band over the union for an even better contact. Cover the scion and rubber band with foil if exposed to sun for a month. Don't take rubber or tape off for at least 2 more months.

@JSacadura
@JSacadura 2 жыл бұрын
Usually, I keep the tape for several months - it's rubber based so, it won't strangle the graft, and helps to secure it and protect the healing area. When using rigid materials to tie the graft you need to cut them before they damage the tissues and weaken the graft area. In some cases of vigorous growth they need to be cut when the graft is 3 months old or earlier. Be sure to stake the new growth during the first year or the graft might brake with strong winds.

Hi, Many thanks for sharing your knowledge about this complex subject. I just heard that applying rooting hormones may increase the chance of graft success, what do you think about this? Cheers
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 2 жыл бұрын
I have never applied rooting hormones on grafts and I don't believe I need them to increase my grafting success. Rooting hormones are, usually, auxin based. Auxins are a group of plant hormones that, in the right concentration, tend to promote the development of roots when the tissues are healing. Not really what we want, when grafting. Auxins also promote cell division and some articles argue that they might help the development of the callus tissue bridge, and the subsequent establishment of functioning vascular tissues connecting scion and rootstock. The problem is, there is a fine balance between auxins and other plants hormones (like cytokinins and gibberellins) and the interactions between those hormones are very complex and can give very different results depending on concentration used and plant species. So, the short answer is, no. I don't think rooting hormones would help with graft success, in most cases, and could even be detrimental, in some situations. If grafting works well on its own why add further complication? But there's nothing wrong with experimenting. If you do, let us know what you find. Thanks for the comment.

@JSacadura
@JSacadura 2 жыл бұрын
