Choosing the Right Grafting Technique depends on several variables like available Scion Material, Time of Year, Fruit Species and many other factors. In this video, the different grafting techniques are presented along with the most common circumstances where each one is used. Several grafting situations are shown, like Changing Fruit Varieties on Established Trees or Grafting new plants. All the grafting techniques shown are very effective with very different types of fruit trees, like apples, pears, plums, peaches, kiwis, pluots, pistachios, almonds, etc., if all the other parameters are right.
Table of contents:
1. Limiting factors - Fruit Species, Time of Year - 0:13
2. Limiting factors - Rootstock and Scion - 1:14
3. Changing varieties with the Bark Graft - 1:34
4. Grafting younger branches - 4:04

Than I guess I can graft my apricot and plum trees on a peach tree or on black cherry tree right? I have to move and I can't move all my trees with me, I do have apricot tree in my new place, but just got few flowers that fall off this year, not big enough. Also have peach tree with it that's why I asked if I can graft either one on one of the two trees so I don't have to move four trees. Thanks

I never understood the reason for grafting because I'm an amateur and clueless about these things, but u explained it so simply. Thank you
@TonBil1
@TonBil1 3 жыл бұрын
The main reason that I have learned, is that hybrid varieties (your tastiest peaches, for example) don't develop from a pit. Or more precisely: genetically, the pit will not have the same qualities as the hybrid, so you get different peaches. The other alternative ain't much better: one could cut a branch from the hybrid, and plant cuttings. The problem with this one is that the hybrid tends not to grow a strong stem and/or root system. So that is why a combined solution is best: "under" is a strongly developed tree, "up" is the variety which fruits we want to produce. Was this helpful?
@samidashraf9124
@samidashraf9124 2 жыл бұрын
@@TonBil1 Grafting doesn't make hybrids. Hybrids come from cross-pollination. Grafting just gives a young plant (stem stock) the ability to grow fast or bear fruit faster by combining it with a mature root stock. Also useful commercial operations, in established varieties of a fruit tree that need to be changed to another variety or fruit type; instead of clearing the entire fields and starting from scratch, the first tree type can be cut above the root stock and grafted with the new cultivar or fruit type.

@@samidashraf9124 Would you say this technique would have a place in emergency situations...so let's say lots off trees get destroyed but the roots are still alive and you are able to chop to a stump then add what you can find to bring the area back to life quickly...cheers

You are a great teacher. I wish we had the internet 40 years ago. My ex wife's uncle ( really nice guy ) was using the bush hog when the blade broke off and flew out and put a deep wide gash across the base of his favorite apple tree. I went to the library and read through a few books. I managed to bridge the gaps with 9 branches of the tree and 7 of them took. the tree needed pruning any way. I read about pruning back when I was about 13. (Library again.) Hey I'm from Maryland about 8 mi. east of D.C.. So in what area do you live? Since I've retired two years ago I love learning from Videos like this. It helps to know something about the subject so you can tell the difference between experts like you and the time wasters that just like to hear themselves talk. Thanks for your work. Mike

Awesome informative video, really appreciated. Thank you! Because of my inexperience, I overwatered my avocado tree and it died ( or so I thought) from root rot. Months after I stopped watering it, I realized that it was actually alive and had started growing up from the very bottom, since the rest of the tree (graft included) is dried. The new branch is about a foot below the grafting. Do I need to graft it again? Thank you!

This happens with Avocado, to a lot of people in temperate zones when the tree goes dormant and they assumed it died. If you are in a warm to hot climate then seems it's been a lucky revival.

I'm so glad this video popped up in my feed. I haven't grafted a tree in 20 years and now I want to go out and add varieties to our 4 apples, or better yet- add to the 'wild' crab apple that finally flowered for the first time last year (we waited so many years hoping for a regular apple, lol). It's already looking like it'll be big, some lower grafted limbs would be nice. I'll need to wait, as the daytime high was 22 F today. The guy who taught me to graft knew a guy with over 100 varieties on a single tree (he was part of a 'club' that went to old logging camps to find trees that had grown as a result of barrels of apples delivered for the workers to eat- looking for good traits).

Awesome video as always Jaime! I learned SOO much from watching this video, your channel is better than gold! One question, I keep thinking to myself that your parafilm looks so much better than mine.. it looks as if you barely need apply any pressure when wrapping to get it to stick to itself and you obviously have no problems with the scion buds breaking through the parafilm. With my parafilm it seems if I don’t stretch it enough or apply enough pressure while wrapping it won’t stick to itself. Ive also had buds not make it through in the past when I didn’t stretch it enough around the bud. I am thinking you must have a better grade of parafilm perhaps? Is this a different brand? Or maybe mine is fake? Lol I must know!

Hi, Jamie. Thanks for the comment and the support. I use "Parafilm Nursery Grafting Tape" by Bemis. Even so, I am careful when applying it over the bud. Only one lap and I stretch it well in that area, so the bud breaks free with ease.

I have tried for years to learn grafting. I took classes at nurseries and still struggle. I truly appreciate the mastery of your craft you share. If you ever decide to come to the states I would offer my place as a pitstop and would gladly pay you for your time and helping me with my little fruit forest of different fruits. I have gotten quite good at pruning and training but grafting still idles me
