I think what makes Schlatt the character so fun is the fact that he makes it abundantly clear that he’s playing a villain. To the point where you’d have to be pretty damn oblivious to think he’s being serious about any of this. He never attracted an offensive audience because his offensive right wing fuck cancel culture character is less so a reflection of himself but rather a comical caricature of them. He both plays up his evilness as hammily as he can so there’s no mistaking his intentions, and also has his character get humiliated and reality checked regularly. And whenever we see his true self shine through he’s a genuinely kind and sincere person irl, but he doesn’t show that to us aside from the weekly slap because that’s not what we’re here for and that’s not what he’s here to do.

@@DrDerpGamer I also think its because pretty much everyone he hangs out with has opposite views to his character. This comment genuinely changed my perspective about him. In my defense, I have personally talked to people who were way more offensive and genuinely prejudice... who meant every word of it, even if it was a "joke". I've heard "they're just joking guys!!!! take a joke my gaaaawd" so many times (while it clearly WASN'T Just A Joke) that I get immediately suspicious, but seeing your comment made it clear that he is ACTUALLY playing a character, not just saying he is so he can amass a horrid gaggle of troglodytes while having a convenient excuse at the ready. Seeing this really lifted my heart because I now know that this isn't just some alt right bitch everyone who everyone pretends plays a character, but a guy ACTUALLY playing a character. Thank you for your nuance and articulation.
@Wizardofslimes5 ай бұрын
@@TVtheTV his character is the age old trope of “crossing the line twice.” A joke so over the top bad that it loops back around to being funny. He makes a joke about mistreating and evicting tenants, which might be something that could be seen as a problem, but when you add in the context that he was telling this to the Talking Ben app it becomes funny again because you realize there’s no way this is serious.

I think being a Jschlatt fan is understanding the difference between loving a creator, and loving to watch a creator. We all say something along the lines of "oh yeah man! I love jschlatt, his content is awesome, he's super funny" but what we mean is "I love watching jschlatts videos, he's super funny". There's a difference between loving someone and loving the content someone makes. Somewhere along the lines in a lot of fandoms, people got those things mixed up and it's been a downward spiral ever since. I'm not saying this to dis anyone btw. It can be easy to fall into that mentality when things in real life are going poorly and content is the best way to escape it, but in the end it's never healthy and it can be pretty hurtful for everyone involved. Alright, I'll get off my soapbox for now, this is just something I think about from time to time and thought I'd share the conclusions I came to

I saw the clip that you put at the end of the video a couple years ago(?). I think all I know is that I watched it when the video was released and I’m unsure how that made some of his other fans feel if it made them sad, mad, or hurt. But I know that for me it explained how in return I felt about him (and all the other content creators I enjoy) Because people say they love their favorite content creators all the time and it was something that I never thought about deeply until then it was something that was normal, and this sounds weird but that video assured me that I don’t and shouldn’t love my favorite content creators and that's okay. How can I possibly love a content creator when I don't know them? I see an act that they put on every time they’re on camera and even when they are being themselves and having a serious type video that's once every 5 years depending on who you watch. I don't have shared experiences with these people like I do with my family and best friends. I can't possibly say I love them and mean it. Yes, they may have gotten me out of bad places but I don't love them and we don't know each other.

Right now, as I type this and as you or anyone else reads this content, Jschlatt is out living his life, doing normal people things like going to the grocery store or brushing his teeth. One thing I can criticize it the fact that he plays into the repeated jokes and causes them to grow, as if he just glossed over it or made a short comment about it, it wouldn't be a prevalent, such as with the "it's free" jokes. People apparently like to mess with creators (or the personas they put on) and get in their heads, and it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth, since it's in the same vain as someone poking you to get your attention, then laughing at them for responding. Jerma was like that too and now he barely does anything (for a couple of reasons) but one of them is the fact that his fanbase kept repeating the jokes and making him seem like a weirdo, when it's just not funny and seems to make him feel weird. That's the only thing I don't like, and that could be easily improved by just glossing over the unfunny or repeated jokes.

“I haven’t spent a cent on any content creators, even my biggest idols. What I think makes a fan is if your nervous to interact with them.” I just want to critique these couple of sentences for a second. Firstly, supporting your favourite creators (within your means) is a pretty big factor of being a fan. The reasons why creators make content varies, but the means of making more is making it profitable. There’s an unwritten contract that in order to enjoy more content, the fans should supply the means for it. It’s obviously not the only thing, and you’re not obligated to spend any money if the content is free, but showing a little bit of support once in a while is a big indicator of who the recurring audience and genuine fans are. Secondly, bring nervous isnt at all what *defines* being a fan: it’s a symptom of it. Like with all symptoms, it doesn’t apply to everyone, and you can be nervous around people you’re not a fan of. I’d say what actually defines being a fan is just enjoying the content and being familiar with it. Other factors such as community interaction play a big part, but are an additional piece of fandom, not the core.
@DrDerpGamer5 ай бұрын
Thats true but I was more so saying that a more prominent factor of being a fan of someone is if youre nervous. Many people have bought merch but are no longer a fan so they care less about a creator, but to be nervous is a ever updating thing. At least thats how I look at it.
@SonaLovesick3 ай бұрын
The key difference with his audience, I'd say, is most of his audience understands he's playing a character. That this is all just an act. That at the end of the day the guy screaming at 911 jokes is not the same one giving minor philosophy lessons on life with MrBeast.

This video spoke absolute facts, I used to actually dislike Jschlatt in the past because I thought he was this shallow unfunny "cancelled" guy, but then over time I looked deeper into his content, watched some of his podcasts (Chuckle Sandwich and Sleep deprived) and I realized he's just a cool guy, he's a human just like us and he's just the type of person we need to see more of on KZbin.

Its easy to just see a surface level of any creator after all thats what they give us but still I think its nice to see beyond it even if its just a little bit.

I just found this video but I've been rolling down the Schlatt content line for the past 2 weeks or so and it's been a ride. I really like this man and his character, he seems really funny and that's probably why I enjoy his content so much. I have been watching really... Anything that he was involved in cause he just makes those vids really funny. I think I watched about 20 or more chuckle sandwich episodes, a LOT of JschlattLIVE content and some content with other creators like the Jenga game or the Tommyinnit videos with Schlatt. Tbh my internet feed is just him and I can't really complain about that when the content is really that good. Loved your vid ^^

i just watched your last video on schlatt and i thought, "man, i want to watch more videos about schlatt, but i really like this guy's video, if only this same youtuber made another video about schlatt, that would be perfect" and lo and behold, this was one of your most recent. anyway, i really like this video. i am a jschlatt fan and i always thought the fanbase and jschlatt himself were surprisingly... decent people i guess is the best way to put it? despite the kind of humor going on. but this video really put that into words and explained why. proud to call myself a fan of "jschlingus" himself (also RIP big man. you missed the fourth joke which is that he fucking died and was replaced by ai. i don't know why that's a thing.) edit: NEVERMIND i just watched your most recent video my bad. you have encompassed the entirety of the fanbase's humor and you have all my respect.

@@DrDerpGamer 😂, no but for real I do consider myself "a Fan" of some people just because of the fact that I watch their content but I wouldn't get nervous or super excited if I met them. Maybe "yo that's pretty cool" but no different if I met someone else that I'd never met in person. I might be a tad more likely to treat them like a friend than like a complete stranger but that's because they aren't "quite" a complete stranger. But at the end of the day they are just people and someone like Jschlatt is just "a guy." And heck if anything if they are trying to mind their own business/have private time for themselves or with family or friends I'd definitely leave them alone. But maybe that just my Dutch "Doe normaal"-attitude.
