When it comes to drinking on board. If you fail a breathalyzer, you'll get fired, loose all your certificates and drug/alcohol abuse charge will go on your record if someone does a background check( it will be on your record for 10 years). If any of you know you're going to fail a breath or urine test DO NOT DO THE TEST. You be fired for refusing but you will get to keep your certificates and you won't have a record!!! I've never heard anyone on KZbin talk about the implications of drinking on the ship in this way. I had to learn this at Piney Point during training for NCL.

use to work on carnival and got fired I guess couldn't handle being in one area all the time so my mind just got messed up. The cruise life seems like the restaurant life. I spent years in it and yes my work life became my social life, the late nights, the drinks, the cute girls you worked with. You know how it is when you're young and single. It is so much fun but at a certain point, I realized if I wanted a normal married life with kids I had to get out and I did. However the customer service lessons strengthened me and helped me become the better business owner that I am today.

Yes! I worked my way through college working as wait staff for cafes, fine dining restaurants, catering jobs, and diners. I am really grateful for those experiences because I learned how it is to work hard in a service industry. And now I know what it takes to make someone’s food come to their table on time, and how hard people work. I am always a good tipper, and I find that people who have worked in the service industry tip far better and treat wait staff better.

working on a cruise ship as entertainer is very very different than others who work 12hrs a day and we worked 3 sets less than 3 hrs a day everyday rest day few worked out hung out, I had same issues I did not hang out with band so they talked shit that I was too good for them like I care I made friends very fast with jazz musicians in other rooms and showrooms and even the show people who came onboard weekly so I was upity they said/not true I'm pretty outgoing like you not quite as like you but close. I also went to crew bars but it was pretty clingy show people hung with themselves and musicians hung out with musicians I tried to hang with photo shop guys that became my friends and other musicians, lots of drama onboard and easier for me to stay by myself. I kept busy watched movies never used internet cafe onboard it was cheaper at ports so that's what I used. Very interesting what you went thru ...very similar and navy haha is similar depending what your mos was. thanks for sharing.

Thank you so much for making these cruise ship videos. It’s interesting to experience something that I can never go into as a job. I’m legally blind so mean working in this environment is probably a no go they probably reject me by my medical evaluation. So it’s interesting to see what my life might be like if I had gone in work for a cruise ship especially with the fact that I live in Seattle Washington and we see ships come in all the time. I definitely don’t think I’ve ever had the money in my life to afford a cruise so I didn’t think about working for one in my 20’s. And of course that was gonna go start.

Cruise lines appear quite sketchy when it comes to adhering to labor laws. For one thing you are supposed to be paid during your training period. They sound like a sweatshop. They break labor laws such as not paying overtime for hours over 45hrs/week. They sound like an old mining operation where you owe your soul to the company store.

So let me get this straight. Your a black man who was apart of a black ensemble cast while on the ship. You stated that typically departments hangout together (as a standard practice,) however since your "friendly" you decided not to hangout with your department (who's comprise of other black people) instead you hangout with people of no color (as that's the picture you inserted in this video) and as of today your girlfriends is a women of non color. HUMMMMMMMMM...... With that being said I believe its wrong for your fellow cast mates to make comments behind/in your face about the situation. Your grown and can hangout with whoever you want. However I don't think the majority of the cast making that assessment of you came out of thin air.

8-12 hrs a day is a lot of work hours? Most jobs are 8hrs a day. The company I work for is 8 unless one of your counterparts is on vacation, FMLA, or just calls out sick. I work a ton of 12’s. Sometimes, you won’t have a counterpart for months. Luckily, some of the other guys in my department and shift will cover some 12’s for the other guys. I honestly thought you were going to say 16th a or more when you said that.

I didn’t get to work on ships, but back in 2004, Feld Entertainment decided to start a spin-off of Disney on Ice, Disney Live - basically stage shows without the ice. It would open in the Pan-Pacific. I decided to audition for fun. I got a callback audition the same day and a call with a job offer by that evening (after a different audition no less). I didn’t even care what the contract was. I was ready to sign! I have trouble making and keeping friends and unfortunately the same went for that job. The biggest plus was seeing places like New Zealand, Australia, Thailand, and Japan. The downside? Not only did it feel like high school, you are working, living, and seeing the same 45 people day in and day out. I spent a lot of money too, but the experiences of that spending were worth it. I didn’t drink, but I loved to get out there and see a city in my downtime. Would I do it again? Absolutely, but I wish above all else, that I prepared myself differently mentally. The important thing I tell people when they are considering touring/cruising for a living is: can you stand the idea of living and working with the same people for months on end? I didn’t ask myself that at all. I just thought of the travel and nothing else. All 10 things you mentioned definitely related to my experiences.

Yep - 10 years on ships, but none of it would have happened if I didn't pay the $2000 up front for all the medicals, visa, training, training in London (I worked for Steiner), not to mention not getting paid for 6 weeks after an additional 3 weeks training (9 weeks in total). Then, crazy hours and even crazier managers. To top it off, one specific contract being HATED by the officers and especially the Captain who went on a mission to get me off the ship. Oh, I forgot to mention, then as a manager dealing with the death of a crew member (male singer) who went overboard and I just happened to be dating the female singer. So I dealt with it personally with her + my team (spa) all witnessed him going overboard, so I had to deal with it professionally. The list goes on and on.... BUT..... There's a reason why I lasted 10 years though, because I LOVED every moment of working on a ship (minus the things I've mentioned) from lifetime friends all over the world, my confidence as a person and not to mention travelling the entire world for a decade. Great video and I'd recommend anyone who wants an incredible life experience, ships can be one great option.

So they aren’t paying you during training and or rehearsals? That’s just criminal. I can understand having to pay for accomodation and food as you would have those expenses anywhere on land, but if ypu aren’t earning a wage for your time and effort that’s beyond messed up.

Unfortunately that's the norm for the entertainment industry. Most people pay for everything themselves until they're actually doing shows.

If I had a child, working on a cruise ship would be last place I would work. I can see it would be fun and an experience say for a college student in the summer or right out of college. I wouldn't consider it a serious job.

I was and still am the way as u! A social butterfly in high school and still now many years afterwards. I don’t get judged or have comments on my social butterflyness wanting to hang out w people from other “departments” I guess lol, but in HS, I definitely had some of my friends from my main table make little comments that idk made me think they were a little bothered probably. But I noticed, that that was only from the non social butterflies of the group. Comments made from the ones who only sat and socialized at our table. Which for me to each their own, it would be great if they wanted to join me socializing with my other friends, but if not, that was fine too. I would socialize w them on my own or with my other social butterfly friend from the group or the other friend who also had some friends from other tables lol. Ur experience of close nit communities and gossip spreading and sleeping within the employees, kinda reminds me of working at one of those POPULAR big chain restaurants that u see commercials for 🤣, omg. We all socialized with each other but yeah like the servers would hang out w the servers and bar tenders, the cooks w the cooks, the hosts w the hosts, but some ppl would also hang out from some ppl from other “departments” or everybody. Age, language barriers, cultures were definitely a factor, but the servers were mainly the ones who would go out after work, and everybody else too during the summer bcus that’s when the European visa employees would come, so it was definitely party and work and party and party and work and party for them, which was also fun for us as some of us did try to be good American hosts sometimes. So I am a Latina who had a black boyfriend, during my time at the restaurant. Now I don’t think u had that experience of ur black cast mates saying that u don’t like black girls or a black self-hater just bcus u were on a cruise ship. That unfortunately happens on land too. And I think it just depends on the black ppl u surround urself with. So it sucks that u can’t choose who u work with on that cruise ship and those are the type of ppl that u got cast with, but yeah some won’t be as accepting as us and judge interracial relationships (but those r in all cultures and races unfortunately 😂smh), but some will be cool with it and even partake in that too. In my experience, my man-at-the-time got told by some of the black girls (some who were into him and disrespectful btw 🙄) lil comments about why he was with me, that he should be with a black girl, etc, and I got some indirect and discreet black girl “hate” too that he told me about. Those that were jealous of me or hating on me being with him weren’t as blatant and forthcoming, but luckily there weren’t many that hated on the union lol. And I am just aware (by him telling me too) that some ppl exist in the black community that will hate on black guys liking a different race. So yeah just the cast u got stuck with and maybe some of them also didn’t like mingling outside of their cast either cus they aren’t as much of a social butterfly as u, but that’s ok, as long as their comments ain’t rude or judgmental or bitter. They definitely sounded a little bit catty and jealous of ur time that u spent w other ppl, maybe they just wanted u to hang out w them more and missed u, but that is unfortunately how they deal w missing ppl and drawing up they own conclusions spreading rumors and calling u not black-proud. How rude. And they seem like those types of black ppl that just hang out w mainly black ppl and not much other ethnicities probably. Those ppl suck sometimes, I got some of them too in my latino community too, where it’s just latino pride and ppl all the time, which is cool for them if that’s how they wana live their life, except for when they kinda ignore or r slightly rude to who is different than them or don’t really try with other ethnicities present, but they better not judge me saying I not Latina-proud. El colmo. Not everybody like this tho btw and their more cultured in like big busy cities, than the outskirts cities and younger generation Latinos aka the American Latinos Sucks sometimes, and I’m sorry that u had to deal with that! Esp being on a cruise, like u said far away from ur family and friends back home, long hours working and w the same ppl too. But aye u love who u love! Que viva el amor! Lol Thanks for your video btw! Very informative and helpful to see if I wana join a cruise ship team.

New subscriber. Found your channel tonight. I see similarities to jobs I've done. If people knew what exactly they were signing up for, they'd probably never do it. Now that's not to say that the jobs aren't a good fit for anybody, just it takes certain types of personalities and mind sets to work the job. No doubt if you can even after the work, still find a love for the job and be at peace working there, it can be a career. I'd be curious to know how people who worked their way up the crew ranks did it and what are the pros and cons of higher rank/experience. Besides better pay & accomodations.
