1.) They handle your drinks. 2.) They handle your food. 3.) They clean your room and they know where your tooth brush is. 4.) If they don't like you, they may be less likely to call for help if you fall overboard. 5.) They will tell you tips and tricks about the ship and its services, if they like you. 6.) They can give you good advice about the port countries. 7.) In case of emergency, they will more likely to help you get to the med bay instead of just telling you. 8.) They can give you heads on what to avoid. 9.) If something happens to the pool or hot tub, they can warn you. 10.) They can be you eyes and ears when the kids you are supposed to be watching disappears.

@@kevinwebster7868 you should watch his “3 secrets cruise ship employees don’t want you to know” video. If they so much as step into a room undocumented they’re fired no questions asked. Do you really think if a guest claims something was stolen that they wouldn’t then look at all the documentation for that cabin and security footage in the hallway of that cabin and act accordingly?

Regarding the bad passengers who treat people poorly, the employee can rarely say anything, but as another passenger we can speak up and let them know that behavior is unacceptable. Enforce a little social contract on them. BTW, that works everywhere - mean people get away with it because nobody wants confrontation, but we all need to help bring accountability to those jerks.

@@Dachdogoriginal You're right, but I would add the following 2 thoughts: 1. People being afraid to confront when it's necessary is one of the reasons the world is as volatile as it is. If people were put in their place more often, they wouldn't have the nerve to be that volatile. 2. Safety isn't the highest priority in life. Sometimes, we need to care enough to confront, and our safety should be secondary, not primary. Our extreme focus on ourselves is yet another reason the world has become as it is. Thanks.

@@joshuaburba1048 its respect for the sanctity of life. His some guy is being violent and threatening someone, call the cops. But I am a small female. I'm not going to confront him and get us both killed. When I was young I might have done more. But I am weaker and after having been cornered and verbally assaulted and threatened by a gang member, after a situation earlier for trying to calm him down in what I thought was a simple situation, I've tried to not get as involved. I held my own and would not show I was intimidated. But I had a child with me and that was scary. Simple rude behavior in this cruise situation is a doable thing. But as I said, sometimes you have to be discerning of a situation and be safe.

I've been on so many cruises and it honestly never even occurred to me that the staff didn't get to eat the same food as the guests. I think that's ridiculous, especially seeing as how so much of the food is wasted. Also, these cruise lines bring in an obscene amount of money every year. The least they could do is provide the crew with complimentary wifi since they're away from their family and friends.

I had to teach a customer a lesson once. I was working at a restaurant as a waitress in the Wall Street area of NYC late 1980's. 3 customers at one table. One of the 3 decided to amuse the other 2 by being extremely rude and bossy to me and kept calling me "dingbat". After about the 4th or 5th "dingbat" comment I had had enough. She ordered an Irish Coffee. Coffee , Irish whiskey, whipped cream and a spoon full of sugar. It was salt shaker cleaning day. There on the bar next to where I went to pick up the customers drink was the bowl of salt the shakers were dumped out in. LIGHTBULB! I put a spoon full of salt into her Irish coffee rather than sugar. I delivered her drink and ran to the bathroom cause I could not stop laughing. When I regained my composure I returned to that table asking if everything was all right. The customer was furious and claimed "You did this on purpose!" to which I replied "Oh no, let me get you a sweeter drink. I went back to the bar and said oops I accidentally put salt into her drink thinking the salt was the sugar. Maybe she will think twice next time she wants to be abusive to her server. Of course she stiffed me but would have anyway I'm sure. I felt obliged to show her that the server was responsible for how her food and beverages came to her. Wonder if the lesson hit home. I know I remember it fondly.

When you work in the service industry you learn to do that. It's weird how you can train your brain to remember stuff but it's all in your short term memory, the day after the cruise is over they'll forget your names. Remember servers are doing their best to impress you so you tip them more. Having been a server for many years, we don't give a fig about you as a person, we' working for the tips. If we fool you into thinking we're sincere, well then it worked.

@@johninaryan951 Johnina - I am sincerely grateful for the security onboard the ships. I am a solo traveler and have never once been fearful to cruise alone on 22 cruises. So many people I meet have such misconceptions of cruise safety due to some fear driven TV shows that focus on disappearing cruisers or crimes on board cruise ships. I sleep with my balcony open on warm weather cruises, so I can hear the ocean and I have NEVER worried about someone climbing over the barriers or deck railings to attack or rob me. I have had a couple of small items disappear from my suite staterooms, but I think that happens when the room steward is cleaning the large suite and someone walks by and sees an item they cannot resist that I left too close to the door instead of tucked away “out of sight” and the steward is out of sight in the bathroom, bedroom, or balcony. I feel much safer on a cruise ship then any other vacation.

I've been teaching my kids to be just as mindful of learning the names of the people that serve them as cruise ship employees are of learning the names of the guests. Each person on or off a cruise ship in a service job is working hard to provide for their guests/customers, and they deserve that respect. The other day, my daughter caught me on not calling a drive-thru server by her name when her nametag was clearly visible. That made me smile, knowing at age 9 she's learning to appreciate the people who work hard, often for not much recompense.

That is a fact. So they usually have foods that they are accustomed to along with rice. This guy is totally full of baloney. Even in the crew mess they had good food every day. They always have some kind of Asian dish with rice noodles and chicken. They also have juice and milk available. They get some of the food that is served in the regular restaurants as well.

I was fortunate (was a stage & production manager, 2.5 striped officer with my own cabin with porthole and could eat anywhere other than the dining room) and totally felt the comment about the hierarchy and how you're sometimes automatically shunned in the crew mess and crew bar for being higher in rank. I made it a point to take care of everyone as best as I could - would hook the blue boys up with any older sound/lighting gear we had, would take care of crew parties, and id open the theatre up at least once a cruise for a crew movie night amongst other things.

I was shocked to hear that they planned to accuse the steward of theft which would lead to the dismissal of this wonderful steward. I immediately contacted guest services and asked to speak to the hotel manager. I was asked to write a report detailing what I had heard and detail what item was going to be "stolen". I was later informed that the accusation was made 3 days after I reported the conversation. Sadly, the steward was moved to a different location on the ship and my neighbour was very subdued for the rest of the cruise. The behaviour of some guests is despicable.

Good stuff. I worked in the travel industry for 20 years. My job was to deal with the maddest of the mad or the most difficult customers. I only stayed with the job that long because I was in a position where I made a decent income and we had incredible travel benefits for our personal time. I would say 60% of the disgruntled customers I dealt with had legitimate complaints. They weren’t being jerks they just wanted their experience to be stress free and unfortunately our extreme high volume agency hired a lot of kids straight out of high school with minimal travel experience and even less people skills. They did mess up a lot of reservations and they my group had to try and correct the problem which often times was while the traveler was at the departure gate , car rental counter , trying to check in at the hotel etc. Last thing anyone going on vacation wants to deal with is a problem on their arrival or departure date and spend hours trying to get it worked out. I related to their frustrations and I can tell you trying to correct those issues is extremely stressful. Many of the vendors didn’t want to deal with a mistake our agency had made so it made it even more difficult. Most of the time we worked through it. Then you have the traveler that nothing you do will make them happy. That will scream and holler which even makes it tougher to deal with. One example was a lady who booked a cruise for a family reunion. Total cost was over $23,000. She demanded a full refund when she returned. Why ? They didn’t have her favorite comfort food soft ice cream and she said the booking agent told her they had almost any food imaginable on cruise ships. Of course we didn’t refund her but just one example of how outrageous some can be. It is a very tough job and the stress level is off the chart. I retired 15 years ago and still have dreams about the crazy situations and people I dealt with. So like this gentleman said you don’t know what all these workers are going through. Most all want you to be happy and will do all they can to resolve any problems you have. Just be kind

I’m glad you can afford to pay double crew gratuity. Many of us save & scrimp for this vacation and simply cannot. Sometimes I feel uncomfortable on the last day because of this expectation. I found the crews on ships to be incredibly nice as well as efficient. I treat them accordingly, and if anyone I’m traveling with does otherwise, they get an earful from me. Literally the hardest-working people I’ve ever seen, cheerful and helpful even in less than ideal conditions. Think outrunning a hurricane on very rough seas. We found ourselves having more fun on board than at most ports and often skipping ports altogether, thanks to the crew.

My Great Aunt used to go on cruises. She had pictures in her photo albums of herself in gowns and with the captain. She loved being invited to the captain’s table. She also was a foodie and played in official bridge tournaments on-board. She inherited a few million and lives frugally in general but splurged on cruises. She liked that she only has to unpack once and still got to many countries. She lived in LA, so I’m thinking she cruised from there to wherever. She hated flying...

I stumbled upon this channel, and I love it! I’ve never been on a cruise, just no desire. I like being able to travel w/ my own itinerary. We take 5-6 mini vacations a year (these are typically 3-5 days,) and at least 2 long vacations a year. I’ve vacationed in about 40 states, and 5 countries, so I enjoy being able to have flexibility. We have several friends who’d rather cruise, and have tried talking us into taking at least one, but we have no desire to do so. However, I’m going to watch every video, and maybe I’ll change my mind. 🙂

The most painful position I watched on a cruise ship was Guest Services on the last day - with the parents in line who gave their kids carte blanche on the ship to stay out of their hair... trying to understand how those kids could tally up a couple thousand dollars in smoothies and game tokens. Thank you for sharing your behind-the-scenes content. I think this one is especially helpful for young adults considering this line of work, who may not understand just how labor intensive the industry is relative to their dishwasher job at McD's. It's also incredibly helpful for people like me who LOVE to cruise and need reminders sometimes to really go out of OUR way to appreciate the staff since they're so integral to making it our favorite travel excursion. Thank you!

I was in the US NAVY for 24 years. Of that I served for 8 years on board ships. A destroyer, two cruisers and one Air Craft Carrier. I will never under any circumstances go on a cruse ship. I understand that a cruse ship on not meant to take the riggers of combat. But the safety of the cruse ship industry truly scares me. It seems like there have been far too many times that a cruse ship has run into some a problem and the captain and bridge crew are the first one too abandon ship. The Costa Concordia is one recent example. The captain and most of the bridge crew were far from the last to leave the ship but amongst the first to abandon when it was apparent that the ship was in trouble. That is not the only time this has happened.

The workload. Dear God the workload. I have never worked so hard as I have when I was on cruise ships. Also, split shifts. If you're a watchkeeper, you're not going to get a nice 8 hours of sleep in one go. The food was like school dinners. And then there's the lack of internet. Half your time ashore is spent in cyber cafes of the seaman's mission rather than sightseeing, so you can catch up with your friends and family back home. Thankfully as an Engineer I had very few interactions with the passengers.

Thank you for this video!!! 💕 When I was getting ready to graduate from culinary school we had to apply for our externship. It’s like interning, but you get paid for your work. We had several restaurants, casinos, cruise ships and amusement parks come to the “job fair”. Our chefs had prepared us for this day for a couple of weeks prior to the event and every single one of them told us how awful it was to work cruise ships. 😂 They said that the only ship that followed US labor laws were the Disney cruise lines. I don’t know if that is still true, as this was back in 2004. But they were adamant that we do not apply for our first professional gig with any of the cruise lines. Nice to see some things never change. Excellent video!!!

After watching this, I see some similarities between working on a cruise ship and working for a company that runs the hotels in US National parks. Quite a few European employees, especially eastern European where I worked. Cramped housing, cheap food, very low wage, and after you've walked the paths near the hotel there's nothing to do. Quitting means going straight back to your home country. But beautiful surroundings.

I worked on cruise ships myself. For me? #1 Having to walk behind the scenes every damned place I had to go, it took for blood ever to get anywhere through the tangled mess of cooridoors. #2 Being limited to the tiny crew deck durring off hours with no exposure to sunlight, #3 Everyone was sleeping with everyone, it was like high school and the STD's and drama were everywhere, #4 Having to muster and do drills every time we got new passengers on board, #5 Only have 2-3 hours to go out and explore/see things while in port/#5 Sharing a bunk with 4 other people, #6 Zero days off.

Having come from the U.S. Navy then crossed over to working as a Shoppie on board HAL, it was like night and day in the living/working conditions. Despite all your complaints cruise chips were OH so much better. In the Navy fleet you work EVERYDAY + holidays at a pay scale so basic, it felt like slavery: $843.60/month (1990's). Put it this way: On my last Navy day, I had my bags packed and was on the edge of the gangway waiting for reveilee. My final day working on the Cruise ships they had to remind me my contract had ended. I almost missed disembarkation. Two months later I rehired as a staff officer and never looked back. If it weren't for this pandemic, I'd still be there. People who complain about x4 to a room have never had the pleasure of sleeping x30 to a berthing, fighting for a public shower, and lining up in the galley for breakfast in lines so long they went down the passageway. Crew food was indeed worse than the Navy, as I'd never seen a fish head on a platter of rice before. Thankfully, I promoted upward. I think all Americans who consider professions at sea should try it at least once. Thanks for the content.

My wife and I in our first suite sailing. As Suzy and I are very avid cruisers, we get into a routine on our cruises very quickly. We visited the cafe on the first day as we would every day and placed an order with the server. We always like to scope out the same servers, bartenders, etc and build the relationships. I handed our stateroom cards to the server (with my usual additional gratuity added). The very nice server returned with our coffees and a treat (which we didn't order). Although the treats were complimentary, she stated that normally, guests in the suite class were ...Although she didn't comment, she made a gesture with her finger under her nose that guest were stuffy and rude. My wife and I started closely observing how some guests did treat the crew. Time and again on different sailings, we see things that are not quite right. Most people are pretty good but there are a few out there that are jerks.
