I just caught a winter flounder the other day. Was pretty nice too 17" . Certainly was surprised I very rarely see them. Those are the stories I always hear from the older guys they were everywhere years ago.

I recall fishing the Long Branch Pier as a kid for ling and whiting. Those are some tasty fish. If I recall correctly the meat of a ling separates easily from the bone. Pretty much run your finger down the backbone. Been a long time and I may be talking out my arse!

I like to fish out on a charter out of Point Pleasant NJ. The rods I rent are always so heavy and they use 8oz weights making it very hard to jig. The last trip my arm hurt so bad and had 1 keeper. Would a rod like I see these guys using be okay for ocean party boats? I usually feel like the weight goes down so far and fast. Not sure these lighter rods and rigs would work where the boats take us. Also the party boats only have one hook that most folks just put strip bait on.
@JohnSkinnerFishing3 ай бұрын
These rods are made for ocean fluking, and also handle big stripers with ease, such as on this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d6avmn-ad9qWbsU

Hey John any tips for big fluke
@tylerpepe82264 ай бұрын
Caught a winter flounder on Cartwright over the weekend too. I dropped a massive fluke that I’m assuming was easily over 10 as well, had two 6# that felt tiny compared to this other one on your ocean fluke rod. When bringing it a big fluke do you stop reeling when they’re doing big head shakes or will you keep reeling through the shakes
@JohnSkinnerFishing4 ай бұрын
The whole objective, reeling or not, when the fish is shaking like that is to keep a good bend in the rod so the fish doesn't get slack. The parabolic bend in that rod does a good job of absorbing those shakes as long as you keep the line tight. That said, sometimes they're just not hooked well and losing it is inevitable. Sounds like you had a good trip.
@tylerpepe82264 ай бұрын
@@JohnSkinnerFishing the last two weekends we put a lot of nice fish in the box out there, definitely has improved. Dropped a lot of fish that day which I typically don’t do. Was trying out jigging worlds ball swing hook bucktails think maybe too much play in hook, big fan of their stuff but best I could come up with switched to an old fixed hook bucktail of yours and the problem stopped. My fluke rod has some play between the fore-grip and blank which didn’t concern me until yesterday if I bring it down to josh is there anything he could do you think

Why do you jig the rod and all of a sudden stop and lift it up a little? I don’t fish off boats so might be a dumb question

I'm swinging at anything that could be a fish. Sometimes there's almost no difference between a big fluke grabbing it and the jig momentarily caught on the bottom structure.

As a Marine Biologist I will say they are very politically charged. NJ canceled their Wind program. Alot of studies are inconclusive about damage to wildlife and the ecosystem. Plus with the increase of Whale and Dophin beaching since the program started in NJ the program was canceled.
