Sly Cooper is celebrating it's 20th anniversary this month, September of 2022. Despite having gone into the Sly Cooper series on...numerous occasions in the past, to celebrate the 20th birthday, I have decided that we are going back to the Sly Cooper Trilogy one more time to really do as definitive a job as I can. So, I hope everyone enjoys this new project, starting with Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus!

This is by far the most underrated video game franchise. Every time I’ve talked to someone about the PlayStation era they knew Jak and Daxter and Ratchet and Clank but then they stop knowing when I bring up Sly and I just think it’s so devastating because Sly was my entire childhood. Especially the second one! I played that one countless times. This is the series that got me into video games. I know what you mean when you said this series shaped your personality! It’s a shame that it ended the way it did, but they will still always have the most special place in my heart.

Interestingly enough, where I'm from, being Finland, Sly Cooper was extremely popular to the point that almost every kid knew about him. And that's purely because Sly Cooper was one of the few triple-A kids' games that were actually fully dubbed into the language. Barely anyone cared about Ratchet and no one knew Jak. (To clarify, only the second and third games got a dub but that gave enough popularity to the franchise for the first game to be pretty well known as well.)

I think I actually remember that Sly got a Swedish dub as well! Shame that us smaller and obscure euro-kid fans couldn't give them enough recognition to be in the greats as Ratchet and Jak who made it big in the US... maybe it's just how it goes when one funny animal mascot's got guns, and the other one just has charm.

I love that in Sly 1, across the many, many times that Sly asks Carmelita out to dinner, dancing, ect, her response is never anything like "Not a chance", or "Not in a million years, ringtail." Instead it's always some variation of, "Only once you're in jail." Like she was never actually rejecting him, she just wanted to catch him first.

Ey, wasn't expecting new Sly videos so soon after Jak, love to see it! Sly 1 is such a great game. I think it's a bit of a shame that it's not talked about nearly the same amount as its sequels, because it's such a well put together first entry. Everything you talked about with the tone, charm, and character were all spot on. It has such a distinct personality that makes it stand out. The moment to moment gameplay may be fairly simple, but I don't think enough credit goes toward how captivating and cinematic the level design is. It's a clear evolution of Crash's formula. Levels don't feel like narrow hallways chock full of hazards, they now feel like slices of a world placed in a linear fashion, with plenty of cinematic camera angles to enhance the thevious moves you'll be pulling off. Also, jumping and hitting the O button just never gets old, it's inherently satisfying every time, what else can I say? (However there were too many mini game levels which kinda clashed with the games vision, and just weren't very fun, an aspect that never left the series unfortunately). Really looking forward to the Sly 2 vid, as it's a game I personally dislike for a wide range of reasons, so I'm excited to hear what you love so much about it!

Sly 1 is really good and I appreciate it. However I love the formula of 2 onwards a lot more. It feels more like it's own thing, not that Sly 1 isn't. There's a lot of reasons I love Sly 2 (Writing, aesthetic, exploring the hub world) but I think one of my biggest reasons would be how the heists are structured. I love that each area is you going through all the steps of doing a heist and dealing with whatever complications come along with that. I really feels as if I'm playing through something like Ocean's Eleven. I still like Sly 1 a lot though. The only game I actually dislike is Thieves in Time.

I personally think that if Sly Cooper were to get a new game now days it will have a better chance of getting the recognition it deserves because of two things: 1) it's easier to market and 2) Sucker Punch is now known due to Ghost of Tsushima, although I feel like the best chance Sly Cooper has to attract a lot of new audiences is either through a Remake or Reboot

Sly Cooper is a series that reminds me of what I feel the gaming industry lacks nowadays. So many games today seem to just take inspiration from ONLY other games, instead of maybe taking inspirations from other medias as what this series does according to your review, hence why we get so many games that are like "this game is a knock-off of that game or that game is a spiritual successor to this game."

I think the first Sly is one of the best 3d platformers. I love how the levels are short and concise. They never over stay their welcome or overwhelm you with thousands of collectables. Which fixed the problem of the bloated 3D platformers we had at the end of the N64/PS1 generation like DK64 and Banjo Tooie. It's sad that as the PS2 generation went on the 3D platformer genre went through the same blaoted collectathon problem all over again.

Sly 1 is one of the most perfectly paced games I ever played. It's short enough where you can sit down in the evening and just blast through the whole thing without it wearing out its welcome. I usually do it once a year. The sequels expanded the gameplay into what's basically anthro Assassin's Creed (years before AC was even a thing), but Sly 1 is just unmatched when it comes to simple, comfy platforming fun. Best soundtrack in the franchise, too.

Funny story with Sly Cooper 2 When I played these games, I was not only very young and, also, the internet wasn't really a thing yet. As such, I thought that the game's locations (Paris, India, Prague, Canada, etc.) really were just like the game. Fast forward a couple of years, I went to Paris on vacation. Remember, I was still just a kid... I was completely baffled by what I saw, I thought it looked almost nothing like the game! Sly Cooper 2 and 3 were an enormous part of my childhood and to this day I mention Sly Cooper as the perfect example on how to write a story that appeals to all demographics while maintaining depth... and, of course, satisfying gameplay, music, art direction, the works.

When I was younger, my mom took my brother and I to a gamestop one day and we both were allowed to pick out two games for our Playstation 2 system. I ended up buying Pac Man World 3 (which I think is okay but played very little of) and my brother picked out a brand newer game, Sly Raccoon. I ended up playing Sly with him far more than I did Pac Man World and it was honestly a fantastic pick that my brother got that day. The game was fun, challenging, unique, distinctive… and overall a blast. Its quite sad that Sly was one of Playstation’s forgotten IPs as Ratchet & Clank, Crash Bandicoot and Sora (from Kingdom Hearts) would end up becoming staples of the early Playstation life cycle… and Sly would soon be forgotten. However I’m so happy a fanbase and people still love these games exist. I still remember how excited I was back in 2016 when I thought the fan trailer for a Sly Raccoon movie was actually going to be real, but I’m sad it never came into fruition. And same goes for Sly being in Smash. But thanks J for the incredible review about my favourite theiving raccoon for his 20th anniversary! Cannot wait for you to tackle Sly 2 (the best in the series!)

It's actually criminal that Sly Cooper does not get shown the kind of love that its contemporaries receive. Literally Crash, Jak, Ratchet & Clank, and Spyro get so much praise and attention, and if you're lucky, you get entire remakes, but Sly has much more personality and charm that most gaming series out there, hell, even more than most Nintendo titles, and has a cast so unique that it could rival, or hell, maybe even put the Blue Blur himself to shame. I truly felt every word you said in this video's preamble, as Sly was also a core childhood game for me, but it failed to last its effect on me as the landscape of gaming was swarmed with many new titles with great plots and characters. I think that Sly's biggest issue was not receiving many installments throughout the 20 years it's been around.

I think even if it was an unchanged or underdeveloped coin image in Clockwerk's level, it stands to reason that he would be the one of any villain to want that kind of coin. You'd think that Clockwerk wouldn't have that coin because of hatred, but hate by definition carries weight as much as love does. He could collect Cooper themed coins due to his obsessive hate that he gathers more of each with every member he tries to kill over the millennia.

I'm so glad someone pointed this out, the Sly image still makes thematical sense to have in Clockwerk's world especially since Sly would be the newest target in the Cooper family he has his eyes set on. Now if there's a prototype leftover that doesn't make sense that we should talk about, there's Sly calling Carmelita's shock pistol a "bazooka" in Paris, which was left over from when her earlier model was in the game where she did indeed carry a weapon that looks more like a bazooka. You can see this in the May E3 build that was released by Hidden Palace a while back (as well as the Jampack winter demo I believe). In the final game she's holding a pistol, no question.

On top of Sly 1(and the whole series, I'm one of the few who actually enjoyed Thieves in Time, sue me) being a really good game despite its flaws, something I feel elevates Sly as a character to something more motivational is his age in Sly 1. While I don't recall it ever being stated in game, everywhere else I've looked all states that in Sly 1, Sly is only 18. Dude traveled the world, took down an entire crime syndicate, defeated his family's nemesis, and reclaimed his family's journal at the age of 18. If I'm wrong about Sly's age, then I'm sorry, I've looked in a few different places, and they all say 18 in the first game. I know this doesn't really impact the enjoyment of the gameplay or story in any meaningful way, I just always thought it was a neat fun fact

My latest replay of the Sly series was just a few months ago but this time I skipped Sly 1 and just started with Band of Thieves. It's not that I think Sly 1 is bad, it's just that I like what the other games do better: the open levels, pickpocketing guards and stealing treasures to buy upgrades, and the addition of Bentley and Murray as playable characters all just make revisiting Sly 1 feel obsolete, at least that is the best way I can describe it.

It's to realize that PS2 games like Sly are turning 20! That means it's officially a classic series. You're right though, while not a perfect game, Sly 1 was amazing for a 3D platformer, especially in an age where they where dying, dead, or being generally terrible. That bit about being the only kid who even played Sly really hit me, me and my twin brother played all 3 of the PS2 titles growing up together and separately on our own time over and over and not once did either of us meet other kids who even knew what Sly was. I'll never forget that day where we got Sly 3 and loved it so much we went backwards and got the rest, loving every second of it, we could not get enough and just wanted more games like it but it feels so cruel to know nothing else is like Sly, it's so unique it hurts.

For games that now are relatively old by gaming standards, they hold up so well, even the first one, definitely a highlight of my younger childhood, turned 16 recently and got my own ps3 and all the old games i had on the one my dad let me use, its been so much fun playing the sly cooper games again and genuinely sad that not many people dont seem to know or care about it

I was born in 94’ and playing games was my favorite thing to do and still is. I played all the platformers Sly, Crash, J&D, Ratchet, and Spyro. Out of them all Spyro and Sly were my 2 favorites, Spyro being my number 1 and they announced the reignited trilogy to come out originally a few days after my birthday on September 21st and then they had they small few week delay would’ve been the best birthday gift ever lol

This is a yearly play for me sly cooper will always be the perfect platformer trilogy for me. The crisp clean gameplay, the heart tugging story and the amazing memories. I feel like I know these locations like places I grew up in. Something about sly cooper will resonate with me forever. I am completely content if we never see another game in this franchise cause i think it was just a set of perfect games for when it came out. While i really appreciated thieves in time and enjoyed the absolute heck out of it it just didnt have me coming back like the core trilogy. I dont think I'd ever like to see a remaster in the style of ratchet and clank ps4 either. You don't fix what was never broken just hit us with another sly cooper collection with maybe some extra goodies this time around (more concept art and development interviews would be nice if they still have any around we havent seen.) But even if they make more I'll be there for it cause I'll always be interested too see what that raccoon is up too!

Around 2002 i first picked up Kingdom Hearts for the PS2, my brother got Sly 1 As time passed I more leaned towards Sly & he leaned towards KH. Since then we've been massive fans of the game the other originally bought. So in a way, my lifelong love for this series is thanks to my brother having bought it for himself originally

Its a special game for me because I used to play this game a lot as a kid with a friend who had to move across the country later because his dad died of cancer... We still meet up every once in a while and most of the time we just play the sly games

If there ever is a 5th and final Sly Cooper game, this is what I'd like the plot to be: Bently, Murray, Carmelita & Dimitri get a scientist owl to help them rebuild a time machine to go back in time to rescue Sly by using his DNA to track him. But once they find Sly they can only come forward a little at a time, and every time they stop they encounter another Cooper member that they have to help. By the 5th or 6th level, we finally have Sly meet his father, but since Sly knows his father has to die, he's conflicted on whether to try to save him or let him die again. Meanwhile, the owl scientist who helps rescue Sly gets injured through these adventures with the Cooper Gang and he builds a robot body for himself, which we later find out is Clockwork. At the end of the game, Sly and the rest of the gang make it back to the future, but Clockwork steals the time machine, goes back in time, and he gets revenge on what happened to him by making it his life's work to go after the Cooper family. So, through this 5th and final game, the story comes full circle as Sly inadvertently created his family's mortal enemy in the form of a bootstrap paradox. And the game ends with Sly and Carmelita finally getting together as a couple with Sly ending his life as a thief so he can have a family with her.

Cool, we’re about the same age. I was born in 2002 and didn’t get into the series until around the PS3 era when my dad bought me the Thieves in Time and later I got the trilogy pack. Looking back on it, I now see why a lot favor the first 3 games over the 4th one.

Sly 1 is amazing. Always be in my heart. 💙 I didn't realize as a kid, Sly ultimately became allies with men who were involved in his fathers murder... Dimitri, Panda King. Looking back, it's a kids game so they probably assumed your kid didn't catch on. (They didn't)

Dude sly 3 was the first like real video game I played at my grandparents on my cousins ps2. A few years later I got my own and got sly 3 for it and was so happy. Then I was old enough to start thinking wait there’s 2 other sly games played 1 and 2 and 3 again and it’s literally my favorite series to this day. The I got a ps3 and played sly4 and was amazed. These games were literally my childhood and every single one is what a perfect video game should be.

Sly Cooper is still a big part of my identity as well. Nothing else has captured my imagination like Sly Cooper has, from the amazing art style to the story of the future games in the trilogy. The only reason why I don't play the games that much is because of my almost encyclopedic knowledge of every moment in the trilogy. I got so much out of the games that I sadly don't think I could squeeze any more enjoyment out of it.

this was my first actual ps2 game and i didnt have a memory card at the time. So, i replayed the first world many times before getting tired or stuck and turning off the game. One time i got all the way to the fourth world but had to go to some dumb meetup with my mom. So i left my ps2 on so i could play later and maybe finally beat the game. however, unfortunately, when i got back i found out that my grandma turned off my ps2 because she was scared of the noise it was making. I was so mad that I finally decided to get a memory card afterwards lol.

I'm 30 and have played a lot of games over the years, but Sly Cooper is the one I always dust off and go back to. I'm thinking about quitting my engineering job to make games, and it's very much a long shot, but one pipe dream I have had for years was to potentially buy the IP from Sony and work on a soft reboot with Sucker Punch programmers hired as consultants. Long shot for sure, but if the opportunity ever presents itself, it'll feel like everything in my life had been leading up to that.

I wish I had played the Sly games when I was younger. They looked really cool. I was able to play just a tad at the house of a friend of my parents. I've always liked his design. I guess it's never to late to play now that I can get my own games, though. Enjoyed the video and have a nice day everyone!

I played Sly 2 first when my sister worked at GameStop and was able to barrow games. I fell in love with it, bought Sly 1, then preordered Sly 3. Then kept up with all the news/delays/rumors about Sly 4. I waited for that game so long! Then my preordered game was buggy so I couldn’t 100% it. This is definitely a series I’m going to sit down and replay. Truly my all time favorite franchise.
