I would like to add my experience with Guggenhein scissors! I bought some and one day while I was sewing in the sun I noticed there was a strange indent in one of the tips of the blades , well Steve at Guggenhein replaced them no questions asked and I also got to keep the weird ones , then the new ones came and they got dropped and a tip broke so they also were replaced asap ! Great customer service !

That was the idea behind this video... I really thought I was going to find them exactly the same... so save money!! ...In this case, I think the less expensive scissors are a good value option if you're not into silks and other lightweight slippery fabrics that may snag... They cut all the other fabrics nicely!! ...I mean who cuts 8 layers of denim on the regular??? :))))

I purchased Guggenheim scissors when they first came out. I thought I would try them since they were a small company and made in the USA. The brass nut was rough and could snag. They cut beautifully. I have big hands and they were comfortable. I notified them about the nut roughness. I bought a second pair on sale. The nut problem was solved. I like these scissors better than the high quality German made ones.

I've been a Gingher fan forever too... I started trying new brands of scissors and I'm really surprised at the differences! My Gingher shears have a "standard" screw and nut holding the blades together... I think that these have added heavy washers and a different kind of screw/nut that's more secure... My Kai Shears are almost too easy to open and close... I was putting them down and they literally breathed shut and snipped a v shaped hole in a pair of pants that I was hemming :((((( (for my daughter's new boyfriend... so embarrassing!) ...But, between you and me, he's a keeper. When I told him what happened and I showed him where the boo boo was (nicely fused with black interfacing)... he told me he could even see it (a lie) and refused my offer to buy him a new pair of pants!

You'll often see metal products like this which look superficially similar, but differ in the quality of their finishing and/or any extra hardware. What happens is that you'll have a large foundry doing a run of castings or forgings with a somewhat generic pattern, and then they'll sell those as rough blanks to various manufacturers to do the finish machining on them and assemble them into a completed product. So chances are that both the Amazon and the Guggenhein scissors started life together at the same foundry, but then ended up in different factories to be made into the final product. Of course, with a little bit of work you could probably tune up the Amazon scissors to cut just as smoothly as the Guggenheins, but that's a tradeoff of time vs money and you have to weigh what you'd rather spend.

Thank you for the review, I've been wondering about the Guggenheins, nice packaging and guarantee. Having been sewing now for 55 years, I feel all the hype lately over 'bespoke' scissors is kind funny, just my impression mind you. I still use my Mom's old Wiss shears about half the time, I have them sharpened whenever they need it, which isn't often. I do like my Kai dressmaker's shears too as they are longer than the Wiss, super sharp and I like the handle's large opening. I also have a lovely set of golden Ginghers that someone gave me as a present years ago, but they've never made it out of the box as I don't need them. The *most bespoke* scissors I've seen lately are from the UK company Merchant and Mills, their name is emblazoned upon them - I find the price is a bit much @ $75 for an 8" inch pair, and $115 if you'd like them in a non-stick coating, they also have a pair for $270!😳 Whatever makes one happy though! I am tempted by the Guggenhein's - I don't have any snazzy black scissors!😁

I use scissors for cutting fabric, not rotary cutters, and I have to say, the Guggenhein scissors are the best I’ve ever used. I have Gingher, Kai, Wiss, micro blade and sharp blade, and several no-name brands, and the Guggenhein are more accurate, easier to use and surprisingly light weight. Having said that, I am not a fan of the Guggenhein 6” blade. They don’t cut through thicknesses as well as my Gingher tailor points for heavy trimming; and they are too heavy and not as smooth or easy to use as my 6” Karen Kay Buckley scissors.

In my sewing room I have Wiss, Gingher, Fiskar, and the new Guggenhein scissors. To be truthful, I think the Guggenhein are not worth the full price, and really on par with the other scissors at the sale price. Because of arthritis in my hands I always reach for the spring action Fiskar scissors. They work well, I can have them sharpened at my local sewing machine store, and they are not too expensive to replace when I need to. I now have a Fiskar scissors labeled knit, woven, and craft. That helps extend the sharpening life of the sheers.

Jen the generic brand may be a copy of the Guggenheim pair that's why they look similar however the screw, angle of blades and sharpness of the blades makes the difference between scissors. I love my Kai scissors, I was lucky enough that when a friend worked for a haberdashery firm I was able to get the Kai 7300 and the N5240 wholesale. The soft handles on the N5240 mean I can keep cutting with the arthritis in my hands although I did purchase the Fiskars spring action blades. I just made a reel where I am cutting with the Kai scissors. The Guggenheim's do have a lovely cutting action.

I was going to include them in this video, but then I decided to keep it all about the Black Carbon Steel... I found a few different generic brands of these black scissors when I was looking for something to compare the Guggenhein scissors to... and they all look identical (except for the screws holding the blade/handles together)... But I agree with you... I think there are subtle differences because the Guggenhein scissors did cut better & they have a quiet action. :)) Thanks for watching

I’d never heard of the Guggenhein scissors before. I went to their site, but all I can find there is 9” sheers. I’m sure it’s just me, but it seems like I use my smaller scissors way more than my larger ones. Between snipping threads, grading seams, clipping corners and trimming, it feels like I am always reaching for them. I do have snips, but I’ve just never taken to using them. I have a lot of larger shears, so it kind of seems silly to buy more, especially given how much I use my rotary cutter. If you know of any great small scissors available, I would appreciate recommendations. At present most of my small scissors are Gingher; no doubt I probably should just find a good sharpening service. Having really sharp scissors to clip into curves always makes me happy.

2 edges sliding across each other will make some sound. The smoother the edges I would think the quieter the sound made. A smoother edge, or a sharper edge should be quieter. Look at a sharp edge under a microscope and it makes more sense. They don't look so smooth. So, thanks. Trying to get my mom's sewing machine into doing what it made to do.
