When you jack the WK up, you should set it back onto the jack stand so that it supports the weight, then bring the hydraulic jack back up and allow it to hold some weight as well. If the jack failed the shock loading could cause the jack stand to fail too. And you should never turn the wheels when only one is off the ground. It could walk the vehicle off the jack.

Great reply / wouldn’t you insured the sensor hole was really clean and wouldn’t you have lubricated the sensor o-rings with silicone grease? Thanks

A little bit irritating with the compressor noise in the background when the compressor is barely used in the video. You can turn it off when not in use.

This problem keeps happening to me (ABS light. Traction control. Service electric brakes and 4wd system) but, only when I go about 75+ MPH and if I stop, turn the vehicle off, turn it back on then drive for a second they go away. Good this also be my problem? 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 5.7L. Thank you

Drew, I'm having the same problem with my 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 5.7L. No DTC codes are recorded with the key view. Did you find your problem???
@pedullabass7 жыл бұрын
i get no codes on key view but took the advanced autoparts and got a C101F code when they scanned. They said right front Wheels speed sensor.
@DoHo7 жыл бұрын
Update 5/5/2017-I purchased a BlueDriver OBD2 reader and it displayed 2 stored faults, C100A (left front wheel sensor circuit), and C1011 (left front wheel speed sensor signal erratic performance). there was no DTC display fault. Replacing the left front sensor cured the intermittent ABS light, Traction control, Service electric brakes and 4wd system display errors. No problem since. I had to drill out part of the old sensor as it broke trying to remove it. Thanks for the video VGAPR Garage!!

If anyone is wondering, this is the same way to change a speed sensor for the Jeep Liberty. As there are no videos on KZbin for that vehicle. Great job.

I have a 2006 Liberty. Does the speed sensor act as ABS as well? Do I have 1 sensor or 2? I have trouble in cold weather and I think this is the culprit.

rshinton1 I have a 98 jeep grand Cherokee and my ABS light is on as well, so when I drive it between 20mph and 60 it feels and sounds like it's running rough and like it's rubbing against something. Is the same thing happened to you?
@rshinton17 жыл бұрын
Joe Vargas maybe check the caliper. I say this because you state the ABS is on and it felt like it was rubbing. If there was recent brake work done or other work done in this area then check and make sure eveything was repaired correctly. Good luck.

Mine broke as well. I first reapplied spray penetrant and then I drilled a small hole in the part stuck in the hub and inserted a screw. I then used a pinch bar/nail puller and the stuck piece popped right out. Thank you for making the video.

Good video. Surprised it does not have more views already. I used it to replace a rear ABS sensor on an '07. The sensor broke during removal like in this video but I was able to remove the rotor and then pop the broken senor forward through the hole without a problem instead of pulling it out. Diagnostically, prior to the sensor replacement my dash lights were ABS ESP BAS and traction control icons all illuminated. Starscan at dealership said " implausible speed between left front and right rear". The technician initially said that the computer might be going bad because it would be incredibly rare to have two sensors go at once; however, it seems that perhaps the computer needs to read the speeds of the opposite corners for vehicle stability control and this is why the scan mentioned both the front left and right rear. Anyway, the rear sensor (49 bucks) fixed it. It was a pretty cheap fix. Good instructions. Thanks again!

I just did this to my Jeep. I had the code when done. Had to do it all over again. Its a good idea to check the new sensor for resistance with an ohm meter as they can be bad even when new. Also...your wheel lug threads should have been cleaned and lubed. You can not torque the nuts correctly with so much corrosion on the threads. Some lube on the new sensor O-rings is highly recommended as well. Wait, im not done. Lol. You should check the old sensor with a meter before removing. it is not always the sensor that is throwing the code. It could be a bad connection or wire. I unplug and do a ohm test first thing. I would clean those threads on all four wheels lugs and properly torque the lug to factory recommendations. The lug nuts should spin on most of the way easily by hand. Also the clearance between the keys and sensor end is pretty important. The surface the sensor bolts down on should be sanded till all debri and corrosion is removed. Stuff a piece of paper towel in hole first so as not to get dust in hole. Ok. Im done. Lol.

You might like to smear a little Never-Seez anti-seize compound on the threads of the Allen bolt before reinstalling. Just incase you need to do this job again in the future. Anything that will need to be replaced more than once on a vehicle should be reassembled with Never-Seez.

Great video, used it to change out the front passenger wheel speed sensor today. I made the same mistake as you in breaking off the old sensor leaving the plastic bit stuck in the sensor hole. However, I drilled a small hole through the plastic piece that was stuck, placed a screw into this hole, and used the back end of a hammer to leverage it out. Took 2 minutes, much easier than using a Dremel or risking damage to the surrounding area. Just a suggestion.

You didn't make a mistake. They all break after they have been in there for a decade. Never seen one not break. I have done what you mentioned on broken Crank sensors on Mercedes. It is easier and much quicker.
@ryanmoore40985 жыл бұрын
I did the same thing. I drilled a hole in the middle and then three tiny expansion relief holes near the outside. I drilled in a high quality screw, latched on some Vice Grips with a small breaker bar and used the hub assembly as leverage. Voilà!! Popped right out. This video was what made me think outside the box.

Really appreciate your video thanks! I managed to swap out my front driver side sensor this afternoon. What a job!!! 😱 Like most other folks on here, the old sensor broke. I tried drilling a small hole, then screwing into it and pulling on it. The screw broke off leaving half of it inside the hole! Lol. Anyway, after lots of drilling, scraping, cursing, and taking a breather, the last remnants finally came out. Highly recommend having a can of compressed air to hand when doing this. The new sensor was a very tight fit and needed some ‘encouragement’ to fit into the hole, but it’s all installed and your video was so easy to follow it helped immensely! After yesterdays new plugs and coils and todays new abs sensor, happy to report (so far) no more random error codes flashing up at me! Happy camper 👍

Thanks so much for this very detailed video. I just got the abs light and ‘service 4x4 message’ on my 06 GC. Pretty sure it’s the same thing as I’ve recently had a new caliper fitted to the front right wheel. Probably knocked the sensor in the process.

Never leave the vehicle on the Jack. The vehicle should have been raised till the wheel clears the ground and is string in the jack stand. Would the jack have failed it could have made the Jack army and fall over. Comment is being made only for safety reasons. Not sure if drive tires were blocked either which they should be so vehicle can’t move as easily forwards or back.

The rubber ring is there to hold the rotor on at the factory assembly line and serves no other purpose , you dont need to put it back on or try to get a replacement. you put 1 lug nut on to hold the rotor while you put the caliper back on.

An easy way to get the broken sensor out is drill a small hole in it, screw a screw into the hole, then pull the screw out and the old sensor comes out with it in one piece.

Great Vid. All went to plan until the sensor removal and Snap... Instead of going right to the Dremel I drilled a very Tiny hole in the broken sensor then hand screwed a self-drilling multi-purpose screw into it about 1/4 in. then seated a screwdriver on the screw and taped Once lightly and it moved down slightly. Then used a pair of vice grips to Pull directly on the screw and the sensor popped right out. ~ whew ~
@dalesanders7028 Жыл бұрын
You can test that sensor before you put the wheel back on. and there are torque specs for both the caliper and lugnuts. Great video though. I would also clean out that small hole really good, where the sensor plugs into the cylinder. It has to be completely seated.

@jth1987leb8 жыл бұрын
I think they are different part numbers. With all those lights on it might be a wiring issue. That's still the problem with this jeep after this repair and a recall that flashed the computer. The reason I know it's a wiring is the ABS is working and the jeep can go into tow and low4. After doing more research I found it is a common issue. It's a wire in the dash. I've been meaning to do a video on the repair. Hopefully soon.

Hey Joshua, nice video. I had a question i'm hoping you or someone else might be able to help with. I heard that both of the wheel speed AbS sensors need to be replaced at same time in order to "sync up". Is that true? Any comments on that would be welcomed. Also, if it is true do they synchronize themselves? If not, do you know how?
@jth1987leb8 жыл бұрын
I don't think that's true. I did all four on the jeep. Everything was fine. Today I had to replace the front driver side bearing which came with a abs speed sensor(video coming soon) and there was no issue. I'm not sure who told you that but they are wrong, because if that was true they'd sell all four abs speed sensors together
@eddbodnar18 жыл бұрын
True. From everything I've been reading people say its the front right (passenger side) sensor. But in theory...it could be any of them right? So, anything to look for, or signs of faultyness other than a broken wire before I randomly replace it?
@jth1987leb8 жыл бұрын
+Ed B now I understand. Your referring to the trouble code that comes up on the dash. I wasn't sure and I couldn't find any info on it. Buying all four sensors was cheaper than going to the dealing and paying the diagnostic fee to find out which one it was.
@eddbodnar18 жыл бұрын
Hey Joshua good point all of them together might be $80-100 plus your time to install which seems relatively easy based on your video. Actually there isnt a DTC code for me. It just says done. I took it for a drive now and the error codes/lights didnt even come on. Its funny because I didnt drive it for a week and everytime that happens some kind of code or problem occurs :). I'm going to see what happens in the next few days....but if starts happening intermittently I'll just buy all 4 and replace...although I heard you can get it scanned to find out which one it is? I heard autozone does it for free? I'll have to call and ask.

@garydoyle71555 жыл бұрын
first of all if you pull a wheel off to do any service you should coat the wheel lugs or studs with anti seize so they don't get rusted. As to the ABS line it does not connect in all those places they're simply retainers to hold the line in place - - the connection is where you separate the wire from its connector with that little red plastic piece. When you fit anything with O-rings puts a little bit of brake fluid or PB Blaster on the rubber as it lubes them to slide in easier - - both those fluids not only lube but soften the rubber - - do not use too much because anything that gets in the way or blocks the sensor will result in a false reading of the rotor not turning and give you pedal feedback. When you put the caliper bolts back in use anti seize - - when you put bolts into aluminum use anti seize because if they oxidize they will snap - - I put it on bleeder screws because there's nothing worse than doing a simple brake job and then snapping off a bleeder screw. I've been doing mechanical work for years and I may use a jack to lift the car but I always put a jack stand under the frame somewhere as a backup - - its one thing if you are just taking a tire off and on but the minute you try breaking other bolts loose you should something besides just the jack
@jth1987leb5 жыл бұрын
gary doyle you DO NOT put anti seize on wheel stud, caliper bolts or caliper bracket bolts. Anti seize on these fasteners will make it harder to get the correct torque which can cause them to back out. Caliper bolts and caliper bracket bolts come from the factory with loctite on the threads and it’s recommended the old loctite be removed and new applied. Some manufacturers, like ford use toque to yield caliper bracket bolts that are one time use and need to have loctite on the threads. Anti seize should not be used on these bolts or nuts.

Hey, great video. Im wondering how you know the ABS sensor is bad? I have the service brake system light coming up on my dash, I assume it is a sensor but just in case anything else is a telltale sign? My Jeep is also grinding a bit on full steering lock, Im wondering if this is related. Thanks.
@jth1987leb4 жыл бұрын
invade81 so in the case of this Jeep even though the dash was saying front right abs speed sensor it was really a rear wheel bearing. On this Jeep on rear wheel bearing was bad and the other had a bad seal getting diff fluid on the abs speed sensor. I replaced both and cleaned the sensor and the dash lights went off.
@Asherr67 жыл бұрын
would a bad speed sensor also cause the odometer to no functoin properly, ie i drive 14 miles per google maps but the odometer reads 3.8. its also on a 2005 grand cherokee. Also, is there a way to tell which sensor needs to be replaced with the u1418 code? I really dont want to replace the front right if all i need is the back right sensor.

@jth1987leb8 жыл бұрын
+Margarito Ramirez chances are you have a wiring issue in the dash board like this jeep does. when it comes to your brake noise have you had your brakes changes recently or not for awhile. To get the code have the key in the off position then turn it to the on position three times.

Hey Coach. 7yrs ago you posted this great video, and it's just as relevent today as it was then. I wanted to offer some advice. When removing lugnuts, they're pretty tight and it's best to use your body weight to loosen them. Use a heavy foot to loosen or tighten. If you use your arms, which are weaker than your legs, then your back, your spinal column, has to support your arms, under heavy conditions like this, and may due permanent damage to your back muscles. So, for that job, I would use my legs to help loosen those overtightened lugnuts. That's my two cents. But sure learned something from your post, so "thanks" all in all

I hope that the driving side front abs sensor is what i need to replace on my 2006 liberty cause every time i stomp on break the abs activate and after a few time breaking the abs light and esp go on dash and it actually stop activating the abs...once turning off/on the engine it reset it and it does it all over again.. I'm gonna change it tomorrow and hopefully that will be it, even cause i have only a normal drill and I'm not sure it will fit in that small room..thanks anyway !!

I had high hopes for this. Right off the bat you call wrong sizes. Lug nuts are 3/4" or 19mm unless you have aftermarket leg nuts. And do not hit the sensor with a screwdriver. That is why they broke off. Use channel locker and pull.
@jth1987leb9 жыл бұрын
Jacob Rohr I did all four abs sensors and they all broke. And would you not agree that I was able to show what you can do if you abs sensor is broke? My garage is in upstate NY and things rust up here. And yes, the lug nuts are aftermarket.

This video seems very helpful. I currently have " Service Elec Brake system " showing on my message board . Was that something that would pop up for you ? My wheel also seems to grind when making slow/sharp turns at slow speeds.
@jth1987leb9 жыл бұрын
+oarriaza1 this Jeep had the same message popping up. It had a recall and the computer had to be flashed. Call a jeep dealer with your VIN to find out if you have that recall. After the computer was flashed this Jeep still had the message popping up. Turns out the issue is a wire that has worn through. I will be posting a video on that soon

I wanted to ask since I'm also experiencing the grinding typically when pulling into and out of parking spots....would that all be related to this sensor though (yes I have all the same codes come on at once 4x4, service electrical break). I changed my breaks about 8-10 months ago and this only started happening now. What i've noticed is it will kick out of cruise on the highway as though its trying to slow down or slip out of gear...breaks seem to work fine though?

@jth1987leb7 жыл бұрын
Gerardo Alonso depends on if the abs speed sensor is the issue. Normally if the sensor is bad it will say abs, traction and 4x4 system on the dash. You might want to go to your jeep dealer because there is a re flash for the 4x4 system depending on your model year.

Had 3 bad sensors. ABS BAS/ESP and another warning light, forgot which one. A bad sensor kills the cruise control. Traction control button didn't work. And it screw with my transmission. Sometimes it wouldn't shift until after 4 or 5k RPMs. Now that I relpaced the sensors everything works perfectly. : ) Make sure you meter the new sensors at the Auto parts store. The sho ohm between 600 and 1300 ohms. I had to do one twice before I learned this. When I went to buy the rears, both metered too low. Had to go to 3 stores before I found one within the specs.

You didn't test to see if the sensor works? What if it doesn't? What next? I wish people would do the what if's in their videos.... What if using the dremel, damage is done down in that hole? What was the white yellowish stuff in the hole before you put the new sensor in? I would have been digging that out not knowing if it should stay?
@jth1987leb8 жыл бұрын
+judith wise The “white yellowish” is the grease from the wheel bearing. completely normal, nothing to worry about. This was is my parent’s Jeep and they had the code U1418, which is at the beginning of the video, So I just decided to change all the abs speed sensors for them. The diameter of the hole would not cause any issues if it was scratched because the kind of sensor this Jeep uses is magnetic. The hole just has to be inclosed, which it is, by the bearing and the top of sensor which a rubber O ring. The sensor is also mounted to the hub with a 10mm bolt. Great questions

+Joshua Harden One more question. You don't show changing the brakes disc and pads, but I'm sure you know about this as well. I have a 2005 Jeep Cherokee Laredo 4x4, 4.7 ltr V-8 trail rated. I was told I needed new brakes (All 4 corners and complete brake job) before my inspection is due in April. Garages in my area are charging 750 for front and 800 for rear. I can't justify giving them 1500 when the equipment runs for $380 at most and $270 on sale. I know I can do this, I'm very handy for a women. Love to do it yourself jobs. I research and do my homework. However this is something that could effect my life and someone else's. How difficult is it to do this? My husband is NOT a handyman and would rather pay others to do everything. He does not want me to take this on. Which makes me want to do my own brakes just to prove I can! My daughter has done her own brakes on her Pontiac G6 however that is not a 4 Wheel drive vehicle. On another note, If I decide to do this, should I change my ABS sensors as well while I have the brakes completely off? My car has 144,000 + miles on it and has never been changed. What say you?
@jth1987leb8 жыл бұрын
it is extremely easy to do. I did all for wheel on my parents jeep for less the 300 in parts. the one thing you have to remember, IF your Grand Cherokee has it, because my parents does, is there should be a rubber ring holding the rotor on. it is located on the hub and sits in a grove. all you need is a small pike to get it out. removing the rubber ring “should” allow the rotor to come free. Just remember to put the rubber ring back. Having it there holds the rotor in place and makes assembly easier.The only reason you should ever do you ABS speed sensor is if there is a warning light on the dash saying it needs to be done. BUT, my parent have the same jeep as yours and their dash is messed up due to a wire that has become exposed. I will be doing a video on that. Go to rockauto.com and order the rotors and pads. Way cheaper. Just do not order the cheapest rotors and pads. they will not last long and will not provide you with the stopping power that SUV needs. Remember to take you time, and support the SUV on jack stands. do not reply on the jack to hold the weight on the SUV. Take a look at my other videos. Most brakes are all the same and I am sure I have some videos on replacing rotors and pads

Thank you so much. I already priced Auto Zone Dura Max rotors and Dura Gold pads on sale $270, normally $384.

Joshua Harden Thanks. I been trying to help an out of state family member figure out which ABS sensor is bad through this test but she can't get it to work on her 07 Jeep grand cherokee. She says she's doing that but can't get the codes to come up. I told her to take it to autozone tomorrow and see if they will run their obd2 test and see if it will show. Hopefully anyways.
@jth1987leb8 жыл бұрын
+TheAmericanUhate that will give a code. Another way to find out which abs speed sensor is bad is to floor it then slam on the brakes. The wheel with the bad abs speed sensor should leave a skid mark. When you pull the code on these jeeps it tells which side left or right, not which wheel. I was tried of trying to find out so I just through four new abs speed sensors at it.
@TheAmericanUhate8 жыл бұрын
Joshua Harden I'm not sure what she's doing wrong, I'm trying my best to not have to drive 11 hours away to find out lol. That's a good idea about brake checking it to see which one slides, I would have never thought of that. She lives on a dirt rode so it won't be too hard to find out I don't think. I don't blame you on doing all 4, if one is bad then the others are probably pretty close to the end of their life span as well. She said the dealership wants $125 and I told her the sensor only cost $15 to $25 so hopefully this will work. Thanks again too!
