American pronunciations are great. Can't fault them since we're just as bad when we stacked the deck against ourselves with spelling. Couple of years ago we holidayed on the south coast and met a couple there from Yorkshire, the woman being an English teacher who you'd expect would be good at pronunciation. Nope, even they don't always stand a chance. We asked what they planned for the day and when she said they were off to the motor museum at bow-lee-oo I laughed and told her don't let a local hear you say it like that because Beaulieu is pronounced bew-lee. Come on, if you didn't know that (my dad is from Hampshire so I did) there's no way you're guessing it right, not even if you're English LOL. Plenty of places the locals take great exception you didn't pronounce it right too (not sure Beaulieu is one of them btw but I know others), even though there's no way you could know from the spelling.

What he's calling Big Ben is actually the Elizabeth Tower, Big Ben is the name of the bell inside it. We get 3 months hot, 3 months cold and 6 months of infinitely variable weather, this is the time everyone goes on about rain, wind and the rest. When you say you want to see a castle, what do you think American Forts are? Where do you think you got the idea from? Game of Thrones was actually based upon real historic events in Scotland and England. The war of the king's happened in England and the red wedding happened in Scotland. GRRM simply adapted history through fantasy to tell the same stories. Even the wall exists and the Scots were the barbarians beyond the wall that the Romans fought to keep out, later the Scots raided as low down as York...

What you didn't see here were the cities of Aberdeen (home of the largest granite building in the UK (the Marischal (pronounced Marshall) College) Aberdeen is not called the granite city for nothing. At least 75% of the city is built with granite. Also Dundee and Perth and finally Inverness where you may find Nessie.

I wouldn’t worry about language difficulties in wales, the majority will speak English as their first language anyway
@Lord_Williams3 жыл бұрын
I’m unsure if you meant to come over as being passive aggressive, however Wales does have a capital W, and it’s rather insulting to say “the majority well speak English as their first language anyway” very dismissive and quite rude. I’m sure it’s not meant that way, however on reading this it is the way it can be interpreted.

The Welsh people speak English until an English person comes into earshot then turn to Welsh just to make a point.
@philjones453 жыл бұрын
@Cryer24597 that isn't true, about 30% can now speak some Welsh. With all primary school aged children now learning Welsh, that percentage will grow. The area I live in is over 50% fluent. If less English people retired here, the percentage would be even higher.
@annie43943 жыл бұрын
@Cryer24597 I’m from wales and yeah I was taught welsh in school but I cannot speak a bit of it, it’s literally called little England where I’m from because no one speaks welsh and our accent isn’t very strong, although like 30 mins away from us people I know their schools are all fluent welsh so it’s weird how it works, I forgot sometimes that we’re a country that has a language barrier ahahhaah

We actually have less rain than most of the US gets. We also do not go as cold as places such as New York, etc. Our climate is moderate and I cannot think of a place I would rather live than the UK. Yeah, places like Spain have it hot, etc but how often do you hear from those who emigrated there complaining that it's just too hot all the time.
@phade45223 жыл бұрын
How hot it is usually depends upon which part of the UK you are in as there are technically four seperate climate zones, but a lot of areas also have microclimates which can make for some interesting local weather variations.

Stirling Castle in Scotland is great, I visited recently when i was about 55 years old and ran around like a little child for hours. They have people dressed in authentic period clothing, who refuse to aknowledge what a car is unless you call it a horseless carriage and explain what it is. My friend had a haggis stolen from his car! During the English Scottish conflicts, one side would siege the castle, then swap with the people inside. Imagine taking turns to live in the castle during a war.
