Do they find out who the ref will be beforehand though? I remember over 2 decades ago, when Celtic and Rangers were playing (Scottish teams) and there used to be a ref who was blatantly biased towards rangers, Hugh Dallas. Maybe they found out who the ref would be for that match and didn't want a biased guy 🤷🏼♀️ In 1999 Hugh Dallas sent off 3 Celtic players, which resulted in fans invading the pitch, him being hit on the head with a thrown coin, and a brick thrown through the window of his home. Bigotry is still alive and well here, and not just amongst fans, it's sad, religion and history should have NOTHING to do with a GAME, in my opinion.

"How do these chants get started?" - Much of it is down to the pub culture in the UK. Before & after the games huge packs of fans will congregate in pubs - they are literally packed full with nowhere to sit - and there is a long history of singing in pubs (although these days it is pretty much only when a match is being played or there's a karaoke night). Then you'll get some loud mouth with a smaller group start singing a song, the group joins in, then the pub full of drunk fans and then, when it gets to the stadium, you get tens of thousands of fans joining in. Many of the songs are based on specific chants or well known pop songs too, so they're easy to pick up even with the words being changed around here and there. There was also the incidence where a KZbinr (I think he was a KZbinr) started a chant, and it has become 1 ofd the best known chants around. He just started singing "Will Grigg's on fire! Your defence is terrified!" repeatedly to the tune of "Freed from Desire" by GALA. The track was reasonably well known but not by any means massive, but there was something about the fact that this solo guy who supported Wigan (a smaller English club now in the lower Leagues) rearranging the lyrics to fit so nicely about a Wigan striker who nobody really knew. He sang it so passionately too and, sorry mate wherever you are, he sung it so badly that it just began to catch on. So much is about timing as well - although the song massively exaggerated the fact any defence would be "terrified" of Will Grigg (a striker who nobody outside of Wigan really knew anything about), Grigg was actually on good form and scoring a few goals, getting him a call up for Northern Ireland for the 2016 UEFA Championship. Northern Ireland is a VERY small country and it was the 1st time they had ever qualified for the competition. I don't think Will Grigg even started a game for them, but it just so happened that earlier in the season this 1 KZbinr Wigan fan had made a song for him and so, of course, EVERYBODY started to sing it at the competition. It doesn't happen very often, ever really, but with a combination of things coming together a KZbinr making a bit of a fool of himself on camera created 1 of the biggest chants in world football. Nowadays many, many teams have a striker who is "on fire" and has defences "terrified" 😂😂

The viva john terry chant was after the 2008 European cup final. He slipped when taking what could have been the winning penalty, Manchester United won it. We gave him a standing ovation next time Chelsea came to old Trafford. The Park one is about park ji sung from South Korea and he has ask the united fans to stop singing it now. He was a fan favourite.

Not meaning to be condescending JT, but it's clear to me that some of the American fans are desperately trying to copy the British chants, but trying to put their own slant/angle on it. It's not far away, but they need to add some humour into them too. Do American games have away supporters? That is what creates the banter and atmosphere when two sets of fans are launching tirades of abuse at each other. One thing to remember about British fans - they are brutal, cruel, and barring racist chants (which is very rare and rightly frowned upon) there is no level they won't go to to insult the other team and their supporters. I've supported Birmingham City for years, been up and down the UK with them. Now and again, there would be a particular fan of the other team (usually a fat guy, or someone wearing outrageous clothes, thinking they look good) who would be cruelly targeted, singled out, and abused throughout the game with all kinds of chants. But, as harsh as it sounds, it's all taken in good humour, no offence is taken because, well, that's just the way it is. 🤣🤣

There was another chant that featured Arsenal's Togolese International Emmanuel Adebayor that came about following a terrorist shooting that occurred in January 2010 as the Togo national football team travelled by bus through the Angolan province of Cabinda on the way to the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations tournament. "Adebayor, Adeboyor, he used to like coach trips................but not any more !"

For context with the barbeque chant, it’s based on an english song called vindaloo, which is sung generally for international tournaments, but the English version is much better, and is also an actual song rather than just a chant
