NEW Shimano Vanford and Zodias

I recently had the opportunity to get my hand on the new Shimano Vanford and a new Zodias. I'm sorry that there isn't more footage of this reel, but stay tuned as I just received one of my own. Key features of this reel are unbelievable at this price point.

liked the Stella smile before we even got to see it. I just got my 3rd Vanford in, we have stock issues in Canada, I was tossing up the Zodias and the Expride I like the handle on the new Zodias. Definitely liked the conquest Stella set, Waiting on my exsence to come in might check out the conquest for That. keep the videos coming good to hear feed back on other peoples gear

I absolutely love the looks of this combo and I already have 2 vanford 2500s with 15 pound braid on them. Will the medium light zodias work with the 15lb? The specs say it's rated to like 8lb test which is crazy low

I fish 15lb on them no problem. The medium light is also one of my favorite zodias rods.

i have the same exact combo. mine has 10 pound power pro it doesnt cast far at all. i was expecting more out of this combo wish i would have went with a st croix avid inshore and a shimano stradic

I weighed my 1st gen 7’ medium light zodias vs the new medium light zodias and surprisingly the new one is heavier. It’s nothing dramatic that you’d notice but it was a tiny more than the old version

That’s interesting. Maybe the weight reduction I was feeling was made up with a weight reduction in the Vanford.

I guess im the only one who did not appreciate the Stradic Ci4 when i used it side by side against the Stradic FL. To me the FL was smoother and the weight difference was not noticeable so i ended up returning the ci4 then kept the FL. I did however preordered the new Shimano Vanford and look forward to using that since to me that reel is an FL on a Ci4 body.

I like both reels equally. Like you, I feel like the weight difference isn’t that much. The addition of the micromodule II to the Vanford is great. You’re right when you made the analogy of the FL on the cI4 frame.

Looking at the Zodias but wanted to know if your braid to leader knot passed through the guides easily or are the guides closest to the tip micro?? I usually use 15lb braid to 8-10lb flourocarbon leader

It passes through just fine. They guides aren’t micro on the zodias line. I’m not sure Shimano has any rods that have micro guides at all.

Hi Sir, is the Zodias 2020 rod able to be used inshore, mostly on Jetty? I plan to pair with Vanford 3000 for redfish, trout. Thank you

I’m an absolute rookie when it comes to inshore fishing, so take that into consideration. However, I feel like if you have the drag set properly on the Vanford you could land any fish you catch on a Zodias. I know Redfish get pretty big and if you catch many that are trophy size, you may want to step up to the 4000 series reel.

If you were throwing lures from 1/8 oz ned rigs to 3/8 oz spybaits and were looking for long casts and sensitivity which zodias spinning rod are you choosing the 7ft medium light or the 7ft 6inch medium? I want to pick one up black friday but I'm having trouble picking one. thanks

Hey Nick. Sorry for the delay and I’m not sure this will help ya since you Said you were going to buy one on Black Friday, I’d choose the medium light for that range of weight. However, if you’re fishing for small mouth or harder fighting fish the extra length on the 7’6” would be beneficial.

@@OnAnotherLine No worries. I did purchase the 7ft medium light. It's actually a clear water quarry that they stock with trout and largemouth bass. So I think the medium light should he plenty. They loved that duo realis spinbait 80. I never tried a spinbait until this year and it was fun. It would catch them when nothing else worked! Thanks for getting back to me.

Yep! I’d actually prefer it, but I like a little stiffer spinning rod than most.

That’s a tough question be to honest. If I was going to buy one for the techniques you mention I would go with the Medium. However, this rod in this video was rigged up with a small drop shot and it felt good. I guess it all depends on the weight of drop shot you’d be throwing. If it were me, I’d go with the medium just to have the extra backbone for other applications.

@@OnAnotherLine I haven’t seen the Zodias in store so I’m gonna order the 7ft medium hopefully I like it. I throw 1/8 to 3/16 drop shots and 1/4 to 3/8 finesse jigs or small plastics then I use a baitcaster for anything heavier 1/2 etc

I feel like they compare pretty well. I still feel like you are getting a little better blank when it comes to the expride rods, but the sensitivity and functionality are close to the same in my opinion. If you like cork, go with the expride, if you don't mind the carbon handle, pick the zodias. That is just my opinion.

I’d say it would be too light for those baits. I assume with the -2 at the end you’re referring to a 2 piece rod. We don’t have those in the US that I’m aware of, so it may be a different action. The ml that I own is a one piece and would be too light for sure. Might want to go with a Medium action.

I’m not sure what your asking here. If you are wondering what pound test is on the reel, it’s 20lb PowerPro super slick v2 in the moonshine color. If your asking if the rod is mine, that one wasn’t. It was a buddy of mine’s rod who is a rep for Shimano.

I’m trying to decide between the 2000 or 2500 vanford.. I’m mainly going to use it for drop shots, tubes, Ned rigs, and jerkbaits for large mouth. I’ll probabaly end up using it occasionally for salt water fishing aswell but I think it would be better to get a more salt water specific reel. Is the 7lb drag enough for all the techniques I listed or should I just go with the 2500? Please help make the right choice! 🙏

To be honest, I’d step up to the 3000. You get a bigger handle, and a larger spool. The reel body is the exact same size for the 2500 and 3000. You get a larger spool for more line for those salt water adventures as a bonus. The only difference is the gear ratio is a little higher on the 3000 as opposed to the 2500, but all of the techniques you mentioned, it wouldn’t be noticeable. Higher ratio would allow you to make more casts with tubes and neds during the day because it takes a little less time to reel them back.

The drag is lagging somehow, with all of them. I use them mostly on fresh water but when I use them on salt, I always wash em. Any ideas what and how this happens?
