In this Video, I am introducing the new Family Budget Fisherman logo and animation, sharing some fishing videos, and giving an after fishing review of the 2020 Shimano Zodias 7ft Medium Heavy Spinning Rod and the Shimano Jackall Poison Adrena 6ft 11 inch Medium Heavy Spinning Rod; both paired with either a Shimano Vanford 3000XG or 4000XG. Included in the video is some topwater action with the Zodias and spinnerbait action with the Poison Adrena.
These rods, paired with those particular reels made for a fishing experience I have not had before. These rods are for those who enjoy fishing like those who enjoy classical music. The Combos are beautiful and rugged, delicate and strong, Highly responsive, and extremely sensitive.
The Poison Adrena, paired with the Vanford 3000, has a very impressive casting distance for a short rod. At 6’11 this rod competes casting distances by rods a foot longer. This rod is so sensitive that I found it easy to distinguish rocks, grass, sand and gravel, and wood.
The Zodias, paired with the Vanford 4000, also has a very impressive casting distance. This combo created a fish catching utopia that increased the fisherman’s ability to land fish.
I strongly recommend either combo to any person who can afford them

I have a few of the stradic ci4 gen 2 that I am still using and it is still working flawlessly. I have tried a Revo and after 2 seasons of hard fishing, the Revo starts to break here and there. The stradic/vanford are the best build
@familybudgetfisherman

Agreed! The Stradic and the Vanford are superior reels, If you are fishing in places where those two reels I need it, then you have definitely surpassed the ability of Revo X. That said I still like the Revo X. I have caught a lot of quality fish with them.

@familybudgetfisherman
@familybudgetfisherman 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your kind remarks and for your question. I am sure that you could bring in a fish as large as 10 or 15 pounds provided your reel has the kind of drag need to play the fish to exhaustion. As you may know rods don’t have to to bear the weight of fish. They are only part of the process of resisting the fish until a net can being used. Thanks again for your question👏🏿🎣

Great review! I could use your opinion. I have the 6' 7" Medium Light Poison Adrena which I mainly use for drop shot and ned rigs in small rivers. I would like to cast weightless 5" Senkos with it but I think it is asking a bit from it. Therefore I am looking at the 7' Medium Poison Adrena to be that more all around rod and wondering if you have tried it and would realistically work both for Senkos and ned rigs down to 1/10 oz? My ML Poison Adrena is paired with a Shimano Stradic FL 2500 and I've battled with bass up to 5.5lbs in close quarters so no issues there. If I get the 7' Medium Adrena I will likely pair it with a Shimano Vanford 3000 reel. Thanks!
@familybudgetfisherman
@familybudgetfisherman 2 жыл бұрын
Thank You very much! The 7’ Medium will be better than the 6’7” medium Light in every finesse application for Bass, Crappie, Striped Bass, Salmon, and Trout. The only exception is if you are fishing from a kayak. The shorter length is more manageable in that water craft. Also the shorter rod is better for smaller panfish such as bluegill and perch. The longer 7’ medium will increase your casting range and give you better control of your baits, especially lighter and weightless baits. Paring that new Poison Adrena with the Vanford 3000 will make your Combo an apex predator on the water. 😂👏🏿👏🏿🎣

Loving your content Mali! When using a leader in general how long of a leader do you prefer? Even if the braid to leader knot passes through guides without issue I prefer to tie a 3ft leader roughly keeping the connection knot outside of the top guide. Thanks!
@familybudgetfisherman
@familybudgetfisherman 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! I’m glad to know that you like the content. For reaction baits (if I have to use a leader) it’s 18 inches. For finesse setups I use a 24 inch leader. Similar to you, I dislike the knot going through the guides. I have noticed that hungry and/or angry fish are not as line shy as we were taught to believe. So your and my shorter leaders are plenty.

@@familybudgetfisherman hello again Mali, it's so hard talking with folks who stick to spinning gear. I tried casting equipment again this past week but it just feels unnatural. If I had more time to really focus on learning casting gear I may find it useful but at this time in my life I just want to FISH!! When you're throwing moving baits like spinnerbaits or crankbaits are you using a lower gear ratio reel? My current Daiwa spinning reels are 6.2:1 and bring in roughly 37" of line for each crank. When I use moving baits it feels like these reels are struggling especially with spinnerbaits and I'm also probably bringing in the lures too fast. I found another Daiwa spinning reel that's 5.2:1, bringing in about 31" per crank...... long question, do you recommend this change? Is this a better fit?? Thanks so much and enjoy your evening!!
@familybudgetfisherman
@familybudgetfisherman 3 жыл бұрын
Happy Sunday! First of all remember this channel is dedicated to spinning gear. So at least you have this channel to rely upon. Secondly like you said “JUST FISH!” There is no need to have to learn a new way to fish or use different equipment. Now for the lures. I actually prefer the 6.2:1 gear ratio spinning reel which bring in at least 33 inches of line. I don’t have a problem with moving baits except if they are not tuned correctly. I suggest you use the 6.2:1 or higher gear ratio reel and just slow down whenever you think you should. The main reason is that bass specific reaction baits are designed based on the 6 to 1 gear ratio retrieve. Beginning next week you will see separate videos where I am just throwing bladed baits, crank baits, and punching. Stay tuned and keep the long questions coming!

Do the vanford have any flex in it? How heavy a fish can the 5000 handle before you know it is a composite reel. I have the FL 3000 but I want to go with a vanford 5000 for when I go out on the charter boats.
@familybudgetfisherman
@familybudgetfisherman Жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply. Thank you for your question. The 5000 can flex slightly when the pressure on the reel gets beyond 24lbs. That happens to be the max drag in the reel. That said, I have not experienced any flex with my reels so far since the max pressure I have place my reels under is about 19 lbs. You will have a marvelous time with it on charter boats. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣

I love both the old and new for different reasons. My favorite still being the 6'10" med light zodias with an slx mgl 71. So much fun on small swimbaits I open waters. I have 3 of each including expride and I did notice in spinning the rod is lighter but sometimes I like a little weight in the hand. It feels more balanced to me. The vanford, Stradic FL or stradic ci4+ are all great reels for either. The other day the 6'10" med monocoque with a small underspin smashed the bass in a local lake but I didn't need the extra sensitivity for that technique. I really like the new curado 2021 rods because they're a zodias at a cheaper cost so ill continue to buy those over other brands and continue to buy expride for my high end gear. Zodias just happens to be my everyday combos.
@familybudgetfisherman
@familybudgetfisherman 2 жыл бұрын
Well said. For some reason rod and reel manufacturers believe that rods and reels must be lighter in weight with every new model. Balance is just as important. You may not have need the extra sensitivity but i'm sure it was nice to have it. I am very interested in the new Shimano Curados. I think that model is great competition with other rods in that price point.

Since this past October, I no longer use any of my Vanford combos for dedicated cranking. I like you, I noticed that it’s high speed retrieval is its weakness when it comes to cranking, unless I want to burn it. I try to slow my retrieval as much as I am able but if I need to go to a dedicated cranking combo, I use my Ugly Stik Elite with an old 5.2:1 Daiwa 2500 series reel. It’s a reliable combo for dedicated cranking. If I was buying a spinning reel for dedicated cranking, I would actually go with one of the Pflueger President models. I agree wholeheartedly. High price does not equal great quality. Especially now that a lot of fishing equipment is going up in price with no increase in quality beginning February 1, 2022. No one can say that the aforementioned increase is as a result of innovations in technology. Both of your rods are excellent rods to take out on the water. The Shimano Poison Adrena is definitely more sensitive than the Shimano Zodias. However the difference in the sensitivity is not extreme. It is merely noticeable. Zodias does have an advantage over the Adrena with respect to the rod’s length. So if sensitivity is your primary issue then choose the Poison Adrena Spinning Rod. However if you need a longer rod you will have to go with the Zodias. Both rods are adequately priced.

What about the 7'6" K2 phenix rod? I was wondering if it's better than the Poison Adrena?
@familybudgetfisherman
@familybudgetfisherman Жыл бұрын
Yes, But Not really 😆… The K2 has a better blank at [im12] 46ton Toray carbon while the Shimano [im10] TC4 proprietary blank construction is equivalent to 40 ton Toray carbon. However the Poison Adrena’s Spiral X wrapping process is far superior than K2’s 3 layer process. HOWEVER, the k2’s Torzite guide system is top of the line and FAR SUPERIOR to the Adrena’s Fuji stainless steel SiC-S K-Type Guides. So with the Adrena beating the K2 on the blank rap and the K2 beating the Adrena on the guides, you essentially have 2 rods that are essentially the same. The better rod would depend on you wanting the better guides for a $200 premium (K2) more dollars or do you want the better rod build (Adrena). 👏🏿👏🏿🎣

@@familybudgetfisherman thanks for the input. It's hard finding a long adrena rod. I prefer 7'6" spinning rod and adrena only comes in 7 foot spinning rod.

I agree. It frustrates me so much that the poison Adrina series Max is at 7 foot (JDM). I prefer between a 7’3” and 7’8” rod myself. I guess we’ll just keep dreaming or pick a different ride, LOL my favorite is actually the Phoenix M1 Vortex. I throw the 7‘8“ model.

@@familybudgetfisherman I've been eyeing that vortex for awhile but wanting something nicer and well built. I have 3 different phenix rods but just bought me a sustain shamano reel and wanted to pair it up with a higher end rod. Thanks for your feed back and have a nice day and whenever you want to get rid of a nice high end rod that you're not wanting. Please let me know. I can do PayPal. 😆

😂😂😆I wish it worked out that way! There are some very inexpensive rods that have caught some big fish. I got a couple of old-school ugly sticks that I’ve thrown to catch fish over 10 pounds. LOL! The Shimano Poison Adrena is definitely a better rod than the Shimano Zodias. I do believe however that the Zodias/Vanford combo maximizes that Zodias rod’s potential. No worries on the spelling of my name. First you were very close and second I knew To whom you were talking. It’s Mali😂

Thanks again, Mali. I have a 7’6” MH Expride paired with the Curado DC151 that I really like for a multitude of things but, that is my only Shimano rod. I have a couple Ugly-Sticks and Fenwick rods in my closet. Without these starter rods I may have never found this passion. From Bass fishing with conventional gear to swinging flies on Spey rods for Steelhead and Chinook to 8x tippet with a #22 midge thrown on a 2wt Winston; I love it all.
@familybudgetfisherman
@familybudgetfisherman 3 жыл бұрын
That Expride/Curado combo is an excellent rod/reel combo! I’m sure it’s responsible for a lot of memorable catches. You have an impressive fishing résumé! Fly fishing, Ugly Stick fishing, and Chasing that Chinook and steelhead. Of course along with that salmon and steelhead is the striped bass and the American shad. We have runs of all those fish in the Sacramento River throughout the year. Have you broken or made any personal bests for 2021 yet?
@bdg1405

@@familybudgetfisherman Unfortunately, 2021 has not produced any PB record breakers. Much of my fishing in 2020/2021 has been saltwater bass species; Calico, Sand and Spotted Bay bass with good numbers caught but no truly large fish, YET! I have caught Shad stripping steamers on the Columbia River. A good friend of mine makes a fish meal with the Shad and feeds it to his sled dogs. I have fished the American River for “Half-Pounders” with some success but I have never fished the Sacramento however.

So is anyone else having issues with these rods breaking??? I’m on my third one that just broke on me. The first one broke at the tip at that time my boy was working at BP so took it back. The second time I just got it back from warranty exchange two months ago or less. Fished with it around 3 times and I baby the damn thing. It broke a quarter of the way from the top while casting. This last time it broke in half while casting. All I use it for is throwing dead shrimp on a 1/16 jig head. It’s the 7’ MH so it should be more than enough rod for that. They travel with rod warrior neoprene covers and neoprene reel covers. All rods ride up in the cab of my truck so no slapping around in bed of truck. I have custom rods by fish stix, J&H and H&H that have never broke once. They treated great as well however not babied like this Zodias. I bought it for the fact that it looked great paired with the vanford. Which by the way is basically a brand new reel cause it spends more time sitting on the sidelines. This is a sad rod!!!

@familybudgetfisherman

No. My most expensive dedicated Crappie rod is the Phoenix M1 7’8” medium action, spinning rod at $178. It’s less than half the price of the $390 Poison Adrena that you referenced. I agree that the Shimano Poison Adrena is overkill for Crappie and Bluegills. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣

18:12 I could argue that there is a better reel for the Poison Adrena, the brand new 2021 Exence spinning reel. I have it and it is noticeably better than the Vanford. The tolerances are more tight, it's lighter, and because it's made of magnesium it's almost like it makes the rod more sensitive. Same could go for the Vanquish.
@Skullcapped
@Skullcapped 2 жыл бұрын
I'd agree but the Exence/Vanquish is more than double the MSRP of the Vanford, for most the difference won't be worth it imo.
@familybudgetfisherman

I appreciate your very thoughtful reply. I may differ with your argument in several instances. 1 - The Vanford was made to retire the 10 year old Ci4 and pair best with the 2020 Zodias, the Adrena, and the Xpride. 2 - The 2021 Exence was made to pair best with the the 2021 NRX and the still reigning champion Conquest. 3 - Over 80 of the Exence and the Vanford are exactly the same. According to their specs on Table Warehouse they even weigh the same 6.3 ounces for the 3000 size. 4 - (lastly) Magnesium vs Carbon fiber is the main difference and in my view, Carbon fiber outperforms magnesium in absorbing vibration, rust resistance, salt exposure, and long term wear and tear. Ounce for ounce I’m going with the Vanford. You got me on the Vanquish. I am not a JDM enthusiast. Pick apart my reply and let know where I may have gone astray, Lol! Thanks for watching. 👏🏿

@@familybudgetfisherman Very cool that you take the time to write out an elaborate response, cudos! I have a question! I recently got my hands on a Vanford 1000 dirt cheap and couldnt pass up on it and now I'm looking for a rod to pair it with. I fish mainly smaller perch mostly under 2lb (with the risk for the occasional northern pike) and use mainly softlures with jigheads 0.2-0.5oz jig heads. I have decided that it will paired with either a poison adrena or the new zodias as I like rods with a bit more backbone than the expride seems to offer. From what I've understood the poison adrena seems like more of a finesse rod than the zodias and maybe doesnt fit my fishing style as much as the zodias? I fish 3-4days or more a week during season in sweden I prefer rods under 8' if that makes any difference. Keep up the great work, loving the content!

I truly love talking fishing, especially with people who are as thoughtful as you are about the nuances of the equipment. Congrats on getting that great deal on your Vanford! That’s what this channel is all about; giving the best deals that we can negotiate. Pairing it with the Zodias, either the 7’ medium light or the 7‘6“ light would be a better choice than the Adrena. Staying above 7 foot would be best when it comes to casting. A medium light or light would also give you the sensitivity and back bone combination you need for that 1000 reel size without overpowering it. Those rod specs as will also help you in managing some of those larger fish like the northern pike you mentioned. I would love to hear about how well you’re doing on the water once you get that combination established.
@FinFactorFishing
@FinFactorFishing 2 жыл бұрын
@@familybudgetfisherman You got it right that carbon fiber absorbs more vibration... because it absolutely does! Magnesium amplifies vibration, which makes magnesium reels more sensitive (I know you normally wouldn't talk about sensitivity in a reel but with the high end stuff there is sensitivity in reels too). The Excense is also more tight feeling and feels better build than the Vanford. I have both and fish both and the difference is noticeably. I do agree, however, that value for money, buck for buck, Vanford is one of the best reels you can buy. But that doesn't make it the best. And when we're talking sensitivity, on the poison Adrena, a magnesium helps, though it may be an incredibly small difference. The Vanquish is a whole other story. It's lighter and more sensitive and has lower start up inertia than any other reel ever produced. If you're using your rod for finesse applications, then it's performance when compared with the Vanford will be even more noticeable than with any other reel. All in all, I do agree that the Vanford is an incredible reel and not many reels come close to touching it. But the more expensive reels are more expensive for a reason (dosn't mean they have better value for money tho, that title goes to the Vanford 100%)

Great sound this braid, sound like a old car on dirt-way 🤐 Tip Daiwa Tournament ur J-braid and maybe put more line on your Vanford too, high end material dont says it all. The Mono back-end only works when your putt under your arm-pit ur agains your body, otherwise got not a real function then optic and pricewise. Got the Adrena awhile its a nice rod but it didnt come from other planet and aliens made it. Have Polish rods too, nano toray so well build super sensitiv too, half the price. NRX U saw how bad its build . . . just good carbon👎 and lighter rods means more money by the big brands. Really there are many good rods by other brands too, but people buy Shimano and look no further little bit of easy buying. Got room full of good new stuff too and compare and sell want I dont like ur comes in the middle of it. See guys with exspensiv material and do the catch more all comes down " how you see it fish dont see the $$$
