Another thing. If it wasn't for the batteries, there would be no tension of any kind. You are NEVER in danger while exploring, and in fact you can only be attacked and die in the scripted sequences. Once you learn that, any horror factor the game may have vanishes.

I noticed that it doesn’t LOOK like someone struggling to break free from a ghost, if that makes sense. The best way I can describe it is that, it’s as if the character is trying to clear away some cobwebs and the ghost just happens to be holding on. Like I expect more shaking or maybe some more jerky motions... not this limp half hearted “oh there’s like a ghost on my hand or something” motion... the motion just doesn’t seem to hold any oomph. Maybe it’s like two friends messing with each other? I can’t describe this motion!!!! But it’s DEFINITELY not someone fighting to break free from the iron grip of a homicidal ghost! Did any of this make sense?

I see soo much potential in this game. For example; the zodiac signs could effect your gameplay in a way (sensing spirits, finding items, etc.), have a heart Monitor and/or sanity meter, have slow moving control but change it when the ju on is near. I can go on and on about this.

Kayako's character model makes me laugh because the model's contorting for a scare makes her look awkward. It especially when she has her nose up and her eyes looking down. Her crawling also looks so silly and I love how stupid it looks.

Late reply and not quite the same, but I had a streamer friend years ago and when she played Alien: Isolation, she set up her donate sound to mimic the Xenomorph. So every so often in a tense moment, me or one of the other viewers would tip a little and absolutely scare the shit out of her. I could definitely see some games using a similar thing for multiplayer, but it'd have to be WAAAY more subtle than "scary jpeg in your face"

Asymetrical mutliplayer could be great in a horror game because it would truly be random. One issue with computers and how you can still easily tell apart something made my a machine and made by hand is that the human hand and mind is extremely random. To a level even the most advanced RNG programs still can't match.

That technically exists now. It's in Evil Dead. But I say technically because there's a lot more to controlling the Kandarian Demon than just jumpscares; it's searching for the heroes, putting them on edge, protecting the necronomicon, possessing them or the deadites, setting traps, and... yeah, sometimes causing jumpscares.

The Grudge was honestly one of those movies that just got into my head and completely unnerved me, even to this day. For two main reasons. The first reason: Kayako. She deserves to be considered one of the most iconic horror monsters / ghosts in movie history. Her design is simple (and yes, kinda cliche, especially in Japanese horror), but the way she moves so stiff and unnaturally, the expressions on her face, and that god damn death rattle just burned themselves into my brain. The second reason: the concept. In most horror movies, there's some way to escape the threat. You can defeat Freddy, Jason, Michael Myers, Chucky, or any one of those monsters. In ghost stories, there's always some spell, some ritual, or some technicality that you can use to escape their wrath. In The Grudge, you don't get that. Once you're exposed to the curse, you're finished. All you can do is try to run for as long as you can. It doesn't matter where you go, it doesn't matter where you hide. Eventually, Kayako will find you, and there's nothing you can do to stop it. And all because you just walked into the wrong house. The moment you walk through that front door, your fate is sealed. Like the game says: "All who enter are doomed." But the problem with turning that into a GAME, is that as a PLAYER, you can't really feel any tension. Beyond the scripted scares and the quicktime events, by the nature of the lore itself, you KNOW how it has to end. If all of these main characters have been exposed to the curse, they just CAN'T survive. Maybe if the game had better writing, you could grow more attached to them, so you genuinely don't want to see them meet their inevitable demise by Kayako's hands, but the game doesn't just have bad writing. It has NO writing. Beyond the little prologue before each chapter, every single character is a blank avatar that you literally send marching towards their death. The House was probably the closest you ever get to the game being "decent," for three reasons. First, it's The House, it's as synonymous with the series as Kayako herself. Second, it's the only chapter where you play as a returning character (you play as the girl from the first chapter, in the abandoned factory. Her dog sacrificed itself to give her time to escape), so there's the SLIGHTEST connection to the character you're playing as this time. Finally, it's the one time where the game seems content to lay off the jump scares. Instead of it just being Kayako crawling everywhere and grabbing your hand menacingly every now and then, you're constantly getting visions of your dead family, of Kayako's family, of everything that lead to this moment. It's almost like Kayako doesn't just want to kill you; she wants to torture you, she wants you to feel exactly what she felt before she died, just before YOU die. TLDR: this game blows, but the movies are pretty horrifying. Unfortunately, by their very nature, they can't make effective games. By the time the game realized how to be effective, it was far too late.

Seeing that scare with the mannequin made me think that maybe the game would have profited off having multiple possible horror scenarios in one place, like with that mannequin, there could also be a painting and/or window to have a potential scare come out of. You hear the noise and the game randomizes whatever comes out when the horror decides to happen, making it new each time and giving the game replay value for being harder to anticipate.

DrOdd At the opening of each "episode" (levels, they're referred to as episodes in the game) its says the character's name in the bottom left corner on a black screen before you actually begin the level. in the security guard level, the character's name is male. i forgot what it was, but i know the first episode was "Erika" 2nd one "Miki" and 3rd "Ken". and the bonus 5th level features Miki again. so 2 female and 2 male characters.

i remember seeing a few youtubers cover this game back in 2013. it was an interesting thing, but if i remember right, the major way that they determine the ending scare meters is based in specific movements that you make when a scare happens. so you get a jump, you move your hand cause you're scared, and the game gathers that as data which it can give back to you to show you how well you respond to scares. Its a good idea on paper, but it doesn't work that well in execution, especially with this specific game. I imagine you got the score you did because you swung the remote wildly when quick time events happened. i know that that's the best way to actually get them to go away without losing any time (as i said, it was only a good idea on paper), but that seems to be a logical explanation.

10:10 this is because theres no way to stop the curse. kayako doesnt even have to follow any rules to get to her target either. for example, the survivor of a horror movie is running down a hall away from the killer. the killer would also have to run down that hallway to catch them, but kayako has no such restrictions. she can appear above you, behind you, or right in front of you. the curse can also spread. you enter the house, you have the curse. if you escape the house and another person is around, now they have the curse. if anyone were to have the curse, they'd be done for. usually in horror movies, there is a way to escape from the killer and live to see another day, but Ju-On, is not one of those movies.

I wanted to point this out because I personally owned this game and never realized it myself until I saw someone explain it recently then googled it to double check. Courage mode is two player. Yes, it is an interactive two player mode in which the second remote can press the A B and I believe d-pad buttons to cause randomizes jump scares and things to distract and scare the main player as they grow through the level. The feedback report is basically to tell you if you were startled a ton or if it didn’t stop you from playing normally, and it provides more “personalized” feedback using the zodiacs.

Im in love with the Ju-On series to be honest. I dont know how it gets to me so bad that i need to rewatch every single movie once a year. I saw the remake when i was very young, maybe its pure nostalgia. But i just love it for what it is. And I can say the same about the game. I know the whole franchise in itself is flawed and doesnt seem that scary to many people. But Kayako Saeki is my nightmare fuel

This was the first M-rated game my parents let me buy with my own money. It was almost The Orange Box, but it had "guns and gory zombies" on the back of the box, so they told me no.

This video proves that opinions can be VERY different and are based on personal viewpoints, because i had my fun with the game and had no problem with the slow walking speed, yes, some parts feel dragged out for its own good, but its not as bad as Nitro rad makes it look like.

I loved this game, had a blast playing it with friends when it came out. I wish other people could like it. I don't think it's fair to compare it to something like Silent Hill. The Grudge was clearly meant to be a budget title, not a big AAA game.

i know this video is from 2017 but when he was talking about how horrible the movement speed is i couldn't help but think of Phasmophobia and how disgustingly slow that game's speed is as well. it's even slower than The Grudge is.
