This guy had the right mentality to compete with the Big 4 and become one of them. But injuries massively ruined that possibility. Many players had the tools and talent to compete on a regular basis with them, such as Berdych, Tsonga, Monfils, Dimitrov, Nishikori, Gulbis, Cilic, but lacked the mental aspect. Del Potro had it. It's a shame. Still, he's a grand slam champion, master 1000 champion and Davis Cup champion. After the Big 4 and Stan (who was aware of his capacities way too late and, strangely, his consistency and mentality were only on on GS), I'd put Del Potro as the best of the last 12 years.

@@calvinrioux7280 Murray, but frankly, I don't know why on earth you'd put him in the same category as Djoker, Fed, and Rafa. Stan has as many Grand Slam titles as Murray, so why is Murray in the "Big 4" but Stan isn't? Makes no sense to me.

I think he had the biggest groundies ever on both sides. Everyone talks about his forehand, but Del Potros two handed backhand was one of the hardest hit of all time as well. Maybe Agassi's in same ballpark, but this guy hit a ton. Without injuries, maybe a few inches shorter to help that and add quickness, Del Potro could have been an all time great, and atleast in Melbourne and NYC, taken some of those Grand Slam titles away from that big three. He was POTENT.

Superfast forehands usually have little topspin. I hit a Delpo like forehand in college against my friend who was coming to the net. My friend split step in the middle of the deuce side service line and then froze as I hit a ball from near the center serve mark. It was a 50F windy day. The ball seemed to stop on my racquet for a 1/2 second and fully compressed; the ball took off so fast and seemed to accelerate as it decompressed. I thought that the ball would easily clear the net but it barely cleared the net by about 1-2 inches. My friend had a deer in the headlights look. He didn't get his racquet up. The ball hit him hard in the groin. It seemed like if it hit him in the stomach he would have bust his guts. It was like getting kicked by a horse. It took him 15 minutes to shake it off by bending down and stretching up. He was 6'0", 150 pounds and 6.5% body fat. If that hit almost anyone else, they would not be able to get back up. The match was over and we hobbled back to the dorm. You need to get to the ball early. Get the racquet up. Use a short backswing and then swing as hard as you can through the ball. I was using a Prince Original Graphite 90 racquet with synthetic gut. A lower powered racquet allows you to put all your force into the ball. The ball I hit barely cleared the net and almost seemed like it could go long. I think that it would have bounced in by no more than a foot and would have dented the back fence.
