Yankee fan here. I don't think he made his decision on money alone. Yanks offered 750 for 16 years. Not as good as Mets offer, but really, what's 50 million and a year when you're getting 750 already? Like Cole, if Soto would have wanted to be a Yankee, they would have got it done. I would have liked to have him, but how many of these 10+ year deals have worked out?
@brucesmith1754Ай бұрын
Mets have a great player for the next 5-7 years. A good one for 2-3 after. The last 5 will be miserable. As a Yank fan, Im glad he didn't goto to LA LA land. I still get to see Soto play locally in NY. And the Yankees can use that 700 million to buy three B+ level ballplayers. I'm not mad a Soto. He only checked in pinstripes for a minute.

People are hating on soto, but through 7 years in the league, he has better stats and a higher WAR than Ohtani . He isnt even in his prime yet neither . He finished his 25 year old season lol. I expect he will put up Ruth, Bonds, Gherig type numbers in his prime. Want to compare something? Look up Griffey JR vs Soto . Both came in the league at 19, and both had a shortened season . Their numbers are a toss-up to who is better . Soto was a gold glove finalist this year , and has been a BEAST in the post season. People are crazy hating on him. He is as good as they get in the history of the MLB for not even entering his prome years yet
@gabrielrockmanАй бұрын
At some point, someone is going to sign a contract bigger than this one. But I can't think of any current MLB player, or even any current MLB prospect that I think has a chance of breaking this record. My guess is that the first person to sign a contract larger than this one is still an unknown amateur player right now. Heck, he might even be in middle school still. If I had to pick a person most likely to break this record, I'd go with Ethan Holliday. But I think this contract will stand as the largest contract in MLB for 10-20 years. Probably not longer than 20. But I'd be surprised if we see a larger contract in the next 10 years.

Salary caps only make the owners richer. I like the way baseball handles it by punishing drafts and taxing teams who do this. The money is spread around to the smaller markets so they can compete through talent development. Last 10 years WS champs... 2015 - Royals 2016 - Cubs 2017 - Astros 2018 - Red Sox 2019 - Nationals 2020 - Dodgers 2021 - Braves 2022 - Astros 2023 - Rangers 2024 - Dodgers Pretty diverse.

Mets fan here. Did they overpay? Yup. Is the contract too long? Yup. Is he better than Ohtani? Nope. The thing is that none of that matters to Cohen, who can make another billion dollars whenever he wants. Those pretending this will prevent the Mets from spending more to win, aren't paying attention. Is any of this good for baseball? No, but it's where we are, and its not the only sport totally out of control.

Amd yet, this STILL makes the mets only the third best team in the division. 2025 NL East gonna be one hell of a ride, with both Strider (if he comes back to hisnusual form after a second TJnsirgery before he turned 26), and Acuña both coming back, and lursuing much-beeded ulgrades at Short and Left. Waiting in the wings for a starting rotation job, are Shawver and Vines if they can be ready for the Show to maybe replace Fried who's body is made of glass, and the ancient Charkie Morton. If the Braves remain healthy, even with Juan Soto, the Mets could only hope for the second wild card. Either Braves or Phillies will won the division, and wither the Braves or Phillies will get the first WC alot.

OMG. It is almost unfathomable to me. Close to a billion dollars. It seems risky to me because this new generation of kids are not really even into baseball. Except for us old timers who's dads and grandfathers taught us to play. I suppose New York is the historical mecca of baseball. Yankees, Dodgers, Giants, now the Queens Mets. But in general with the information age people have a broader range of hobbies and interests. Like a handful of baseball players in my family. The rest could careless about baseball. Anyways, as a fan and an x player. Your right. Thankfully he didn't go to the Dodgers. I just happy Buster Posey is the general manager of the Giants. Feel better that it is players player in charge and it more than just throwing big contracts around. It is more communication with the team on who fits in the clubhouse. Who is a players player. A player who hustles has a good attitude isnt disruptive to the rest of the team. We will see how it works out.

In no way, shape, or form, am I trying to take anything away from Juan Soto's offensive abilities. He is clearly a top 3-5 hitters in the league. But I think that everyone could probably agree that this is a lot of money to pay someone who truly is not a good defensive player. I think it is a reasonable debate to have, to ask the question, will he provide enough offensive over the length of the contract to make up for all of the poor defense that he is undoubtedly going to display?
@ohger1Ай бұрын
Hey, the Dodgers paid 700M for a DH, so there's that..
@Welcometomyworld4754Ай бұрын
@@ohger1 Did you really just say that? You really think that they paid $700 million for a DH and that's it? The Dodgers paid $700 million to a DH that is also likely a top 10 starting pitcher, and because of his nationality brings another 100 million + fans to their organization. The Mets paid MORE than $700 million for a great hitter, who has always played below average defense, can't pitch, and because of his nationality, even a best case scenario, he could bring you another 5- 10 million plus fans. These two deals are not even comparable. The Dodgers will likely make so much money from Ohtani, that they will probably never even for one second wish that they hadn't signed him to that deal. It will take a maximum of 5-6 years for the Mets to start regret this Soto deal.
@ohger1Ай бұрын
@@Welcometomyworld4754 Yes I said that. He's been historically fragile as a MLB pitcher - his next pitching injury may affect his swing.. And that wonderful 700M contract the Dodgers gave him reset the ENTIRE market which is why Soto's contract is ridiculous. The Dodgers got value because of international marketing value, but now THEY will have to overpay for the next group of free agents they will attempt to sign - shortsighted.
