Juan! Thanks so much for this review. So I ordered the T-Mobile LG Velvet the date came out. I have to say I am very happy with the phone. Before this I had an LG G7 which was amazing but T-Mobile was offering a 50% trade in on my G7 so it just made sense. I got a bigger screen which I wanted and a bigger battery for half the price of what the phone costs. At the end of the day the full cost of the phone comes out to a little bit less than what I would be paying for a pixel 4A. So far the only issue I've had with the phone is that at times when I turn off the Wi-Fi the LTE won't kick in right away or at all. This happens every so often that it is not a huge deal. Glad to know that I didn't get sold a lemon.😂

Nice to see that someone actually took the time out to compare the 2 phones in hand, rather than speculate on the performance of the T-Mobile variant. This was a great comparison and took into account things I didn't consider. I really want LG to make a comeback. The G3 and G6 were 2 of my favorite phones. Once they put a variable refresh rate screen on their devices, I think they'll start to climb up phone rankings again. Until then, I'm in camp Pixel.

Hey I'm glad to see that somebody is at least willing to review LG phones and has a place in their heart for them as I do I've had many, my last being my LG v30 Plus which I love but I just can't get good enough reception on it to use it and after getting used to the bigger screens it's very difficult for me to use for that reason also. I will say one thing the build quality on that phone the design everything about it it's got to be one of the most beautiful phones that any company has ever made I have it in silver and it looks like someone crafted it out of aluminum and gifted in a clear coat. I mean all the sides metal chrome shiny the back doesn't catch a fingerprint doesn't scratch it really is a gorgeous phone. Anyway thanks again for at least being well-rounded enough to review LG phones it's good to see.

Interesting. I've gotten so used to MediaTek SoC's sub par performance and limited availability at most US carriers that I thought it was inferior to the SD765G variant.
@SomeGadgetGuy4 жыл бұрын
It's the problem with just focusing on brand labels. We think "mediatek is lesser than", but that's only true comparing the top of the line mediatek against the top of the line qualcomm. Matching price to performance, mediatek has gotten a LOT more competitive.
@YounesLayachi4 жыл бұрын
There's the problem of source code. AFAIK devices with non-qualcomm SoCs have a harder time getting community support, because mediatek simply refuse to release source code like Qualcomm does.
@Plumplum884 жыл бұрын
Even Dimensity 820 is more powerfull than SD765G! Dimensity 1000C isn't the best Mediatek's chip... There's the 1000+... About CPU, the 4 Cortex A77's frequency is set to 2.6Ghz on 1000+ and only to 2.0ghz on 1000+ Snapdragon 765G can't compete with 2 Cortex A76 (Kryo 475 Gold). A77 runs up to 6 instructions per cycle A76 runs up to 4. That's why, despite lower frequency, 1000C's single core perfs are close to 765G's, and multicore perfs are higher. About GPU, 1000+ uses a 9 cores Mali G77 when 1000C has only 5 G57...(G77 and G57 are in fact the same cores, name change with the number...1 to 6, it's G57, 7 to 16, it's G77). Dedicated AI cores are reduced too... On "Video show" app, video edition with 1000+ is faster than...Apple A13! Dimensity 1000 serie (including 1000C) supports AV1 hardware decoding (Netflix and youtube start using this next gen codec, it's open source)...Apple, Qualcomm, Samsung or Huawei haven't any soc with AV1 hardware decoding yet. T-Mobile achieves 5G carrier aggregation on Dimensity 1000C...5G carrier aggregation is available on Dimensity 800, 820, 1000 serie (not on 720 and 800U) Qualcomm tested 5G carrier aggregation on X60 modem...it's the modem linked to Snapdragon 875, unavailable yet. Snapdragon 865 uses X55, 765G uses X52. You've got dual-sim 5G on Dimensity 800U, 820, 1000+... You've got zero shutter lag up to 64MP on Dimensity...it is limited to 36MP on 765G Many good features... Lack of mmwave is one weakness compare to Qualcomm's

Actually, if you use other benchmarks, you'll see that the Snapdragon 765 is about as powerful as the 845. The Dimensity 1000c is also, in actuality, a severally underclocked version of the vanilla 1000 which wasn't far under the latest Snapdragon 865, while the Dimensity 1000L scores higher than the Snapdragon 855 & the Dimensity 1000+ more or less equalling the Snapdragon 865 in most benchmarks. In other words, this Dimensity 1000c has some insane capabilities for the price. I tried the international dual screen & much like your testing, it doesn't work, but I did find one specifically for the T-Mobile variant, just as you showed, from LG Tuesday. I ordered it & it's scheduled for delivery tomorrow (Friday). Fantastic video btw!
@kenmastersmaster2 жыл бұрын
Weird justification. So you can easily overclock the sd865 to be faster than an 888 or dimensity 1200 if you wanted. What's your point? As it is stock dimensity 1000 can't keep up with a sd855 or do things like 8k video like the 865 can. Then there's the sd865+ and 870 as well. Did you overclock your velvet? Did you smoke it after a few months? The chip itself might be capable but the supporting hardware probably isn't.

Great comparison, thanks! Is there a chance you might include in the comparison the EU 4G version with the SnapDragon 845 chipset? It currently retails for as little as 399 Euros which I believe represents by far the best value for money phone in the market.

@MrGeovio4 жыл бұрын
I'm answering to myself here (I have to consult a specialist, I know) and I just wanted to update that I got an EU 4G version. :-) A totally black variant for as little as 349 Euros. Extreme value for money and looks very classy in the total black look (the metal frame is also black). A few notes on the phone: SD845 is very fast, no hiccups whatsoever no matter what you do. Fast navigation, fast execution of apps, in general an experience that doesn't feel compromised. Adreno 630 handles Genshin Impact without issues. Antutu (if that is of any use to anyone) scores around 330k. ASMR is there (I did not check yet for voice bokeh), however the desktop mode is not there (!!!, why LG?) or at least I could not get it activated after connecting a USB-C display port/VGA/USB-A dongle. Battery life seems very good (7 hours of screen-on time is easily achievable) Otherwise, the rest of all the other great stuff is there. Nice 3d sound, loud stereo speakers, IP68, great, great OLED display, etc, etc. Camera-wise same as the other Velvets (good but not great). I was positively surprised by the build quality. I was negatively surprised by the amount of RAM used by the system. 3,1 GB occupied for the system only. C'mon LG.... Reduce the bloat... Anyway, overall, very happy with the purchase, especially at this price.

For video editing, the goal would be to look at the VPU instead of the GPU. The video processing unit handles hardware accelerated video encoding and decoding. A quick 5 minute search doesn't produce enough information about the VPU specs of the Mediatek SoC :| Oddly enough, the Dimensity SoC should support hardware accelerated AV1 (something that isn't available on the SD865!). For the GPU side... You will have to look at games but this is hard on Android. Most titles which are popular in the western markets *will* be optimized for Snapdragon with their Adreno GPUs. Plus, the whole "targeting the lowest common denominator" aspect. It's plausible that some other GPU accelerated workload would yield more visible differences. Maybe try emulation with RetroArch?

Hey Juan! I know this video is old, but in your opinion, will Android 11 be delayed for the T-Mobile variant of the Velvet since it uses the Mediatek chipset and not the Snapdragon chipset as in EVERY other variant? It's supposed to be pushed globally for the Velvet this month (March) but the T-Mobile page doesn't even show anything in development for their Velvet. I'm worried T-Mobile owners are going to get SCREWED because they are the only variant that uses a Mediatek chipset.

I would expect Velvet updates to come slow. There are three different flavors of the phone. LG has enough issues staying on point for a single version, and getting that software through carriers is always a chore.

@Juan Bagnell V40 for $160 or G8 for $200? I'm going to buy one of them for content creation. So stuff like the cameras and microphones are really important for me. Which one would you suggest?

Very interesting video. Would be cool to see a pixel 4a with mediatek dimension 1000c.

That could be cool, but I bet Google is still working on making their own custom chip.

@@SomeGadgetGuy forgot about that. Whenever that chip comes out.

Aesthetic and form factor aside, how would you feel about Velvet against V60 now? T-Mobile has V60 dual-screen for $699 (single $649) and Velvet (single) for $588, which put a dual screen Velvet more expensive than V60. Other carriers still have large gaps between Velvet and V60 in price, though. Thank you!

Great review. But i found the dimensity velvet to fall behind in graphics

Depended on the game. MediaTek is surprisingly good at handling some vulkan titles.

The only issue that I had was when I inserted a 512gb SD the phone freeze.
