I know that for me, as someone who listens to many genres of music, nothing beats the quad DAC on LG's V-series. It was my favorite thing about the V30 when I owned it, along with the great battery life I had, albeit as a lighter user. What I couldn't handle about the phone was the bad reception on T-Mobile here in NYC, as well as LG's pittance of a theme engine. With other OEM's seemingly (finally) making 4000 mAh batteries standard, there's no excuse for LG to remain stagnant in that area. No one ever complains about having larger batteries. If LG had even half of Samsung's theming options and a larger battery with improved reception, there's no question what my choice would be. As it stands now, however, I'm leaning towards Samsung again, which hurts, considering my love for the quad DAC.

Just picked up the G8 instead. Snapdragon 855 and better battery life. Also smaller, better for one handed use. Had the V30 before and loved it. I'm sure the V40 is still a great phone. For the kind of discount you can get on an LG, it's a no-brainer not to get phone. These other phone companies are just ripping us off, specially Apple lol. Heard iPhone 11 still don't even have an OLED screen, SMH. I liked OnePlus also but they definitely don't have discounts like LG, while they offer less features.

I'm thinking about getting either V40 or G8, I can get V40 $140 cheaper than G8 here, both used. Do you think G8 worth the extra money?

Does this have the Hi-Fi audio issue that the LG v30 has when filming in UHD?

I'd suggest that the next V series should just have cameras on the back, nothing more on the front, then add a nice secondary screen at the back. Why? Bec their front cam always suck! Why do they have to always compromise the front cam?!

@Juan, no HDMI out via USB kinda sucks. Most phones had that feature even 7, 8 yrs ago. any idea why so many phone companies removed mhl support?
@SomeGadgetGuy6 жыл бұрын
I lump it into the same category as removable batteries, memory cards, and ir blasters, super helpful features that a minority use, but because MOST people don't bother with them, manufacturers can cut those design features and only suffer some grumbling from geeks.

I have this phone and I am loving it. DAC and Boombox, wide angle camera seperates it from the rest. Also has great build quality. Software is OK but a lot better than Samsumg imo. Wireless charge and IP68 is always a bonus. Battery life is OK but fast charge is great

I bought this phone (refurbished) compatible with my carrier for $280 (free shipping) off eBay. I wanted an upgrade, but I wasn't paying $900-1000 for an S10, note, or iPhone X. So I went with LG. I was going to purchased the V30, but read the V40 fixed most of the issues with the V30. So far so good. A much needed upgrade from my Galaxy S7 edge that ran pretty slow. Esp when I'm playing Madden mobile.

I had a v20 and loved the second screen. Upgraded to the v40 and I'm not a fan. Notch font size is way to small and can't be adjusted. I take a lot of up close photos and it has a hard time focusing, I have to pull back about a foot for it to take clear pictures. I've seen some previews of the v50 and the notch is still there, ugh.
@SomeGadgetGuy5 жыл бұрын
Yeah the notch is a bummer, but if you take macro shots, why arent you using manual focus and focus peaking? Instantly makes the V40 one of the best options for close up work!
@TheManlyTrash5 жыл бұрын
@@SomeGadgetGuy it might be that I have a defective phone or it's verizon's crappy rom updates but playing with any of the manual settings causes strange things to happen like taking a picture for no reason or getting stuck on a focus increment. The screen shot app is sensitive as well and will often times crash back to the save screen and no longer allow me to move the box. I'm just going to live with it until something new comes like the oneplus 7.
@SomeGadgetGuy5 жыл бұрын
Oh wow. That does sound broken. Maybe the issues your having with autofocus are messing up the manual focus measurements? Yikes. No way to get that examined or serviced at VZW? We might not get word of a new OnePlus for a couple months...

I've rocked almost every LG phone since the G2, and every V series phone so far. The V30 was a fantastic phone, but my only complaint was that the auto brightness at 0% would make the screen impossible to see. I had to manually adjust the brightness at night so I could see anything. With the V40 I don't have that problem anymore. What's interesting though is the auto brightness stops at 15% on the V40, so if the V30 only dimmed to 15%, it probably wouldn't have been an issue. The 5 cameras are cool (sort of gimmicky), but the telephoto lens doesn't serve a purpose for me. I've used the telephoto camera maybe once (with bad results). I have used the widescreen camera a ton since the V20 introduced it, so glad to still have that and see it get improved every generation. Battery life is fantastic for my use. In the few months since I got the V40, I don't remember ever having to charge mid-day. As an example, I've been using my V40 all morning on and off (between 8AM and 11AM) and I'm still at 90% battery. That's with 1 hour of screen usage and 2 hours of total usage. I usually make it a full day with about 30-40% left, which is the best I've seen on a phone yet from the LG series.

Does lowering the screen resolution down to 720p help with battery? I see the setting in there. Maybe ill try it.
@SomeGadgetGuy5 жыл бұрын
A little bit. 1080p seems to do nothing. I didn't find it was such a great savings to bother with though. Your mileage may vary.

Thanks for the long-term review. There's a lot to like in regards to the V40 but it's discouraging to hear once again how you can get real good pictures with their manual mode (I have a G6 so I'm very familiar with it). The reality is that the vast majority of people shopping for a cell phone are looking for something they can just use as a point and shoot camera and not have to start trying to see what the ISO and so on should be set to for best results. I'm not looking to single out LG on this as every manufacturer's auto mode camera has its faults (Samsung and their ongoing white balance issues) but it seems that when it comes to their software LG does less with more when it comes to the hardware they are putting on their phones.

Guess I am not such a power user, as the battery is never an issue. Yes the phone will always be in a case as the glass sux to hold on to. I like LG interface better then Samsung. Would have got a Oneplus hut it is not waterproof and my phones end up in the water a lot. Thanks for a good review.

What is the best music app for hifi audio playback on lg? Do you have a video discussing this?
@SomeGadgetGuy6 жыл бұрын
I don't have a separate video on that, but since I don't need around with eq or playlists very much, I've been ok using the stock LG music app. Basically as long as I can play flac and set up an on the go playlist I'm happy.

I honestly don't think anybody is going to miss the design portion of the review. I think we've ooohed our last ahhhh over that stuff. It would be nice if we came back to it when/if a company actually improves the usability of the product through design instead of just wowing us with where tech is. Apples' Face ID is wondrous tech to be sure, but it I just don't see why it's better than a fingerprint when its 'superior security' is debatable.
