This was the first Priest album I bought in early `79, I was 14 at the time. I love it, it`s my favourite Priest studio album to this day. I first went to see Priest on the Unleashed in Europe tour March 1980 with Maiden supporting. "Wow", I never realised that Beyond The Realms Of Death was an extra song on the cassette version of Unleashed. Regarding the trial, there`s a documentary on KZbin - Dream Deceivers - The Story Behind James Vance V Judas Priest, if anyone wants to take a look the boy who survived is interviewed in it. Great show & new series, looking forward to more classic album chats - all the best boys. 🤘🐑🎸

Great show as always guys. You make me wish I'd stayed in touch with my friends from school! Would be great if you could cover 'Let There Be Rock' the heaviest AC/DC album.

I bought the album months after the trial. At the time there was little to no Priest albums available, so I had to make do with an American import on cassette - no information about who produced the album, who wrote what and White Heat... and Savage were swapped. It's the first classic they produced in my opinion. In regards to the trial, around the time I heard the original Spooky Tooth of Better By You... Interesting time.

Interesting re the swapping of tracks - maybe a equalisation of run times per side of cassette? Thanks for sharing 🤘👍

Great show. Is a fantastic album, Exciter is one of the great metal tracks, though the Unleashed version is better than the studio. Love Beyond the Realms of Death as well, and in fact we did a cover of it, which you can hear on Spotify, Apple, KZbin music if you fancy ...

I don't know why people slag this album because of the production. I suppose it's because they're comparing it to modern metal production. I remember someone saying it sounded too "digital", which made me laugh. Priest used a lot phaser and flanging analog effects, as was quite common for the 70's. The guitar solos on this album are just ripping. Sure it could've been produced "heavier" like the following Priest albums, but it would ruin it for me. Definitely a stepping stone album for Priest and a major stepping stone for the metal genre.

Yeah you are right regarding production, they were pushing the limits on a shoestring budget. I think we tend to forget how limiting sound reproduction was in 1979 and the fact the songs on this album (yes I am old) are often played live with modern production techniques detracts from what is the genesis of the bands sound as represented here. A bit like being upset because there’s no HD photos of Queen Victoria.

Greetings from the UK-England/Britain....I remember buying this late1978-i would have been 17,it`s a great album but the production ruins it,it`s too limp/quiet/claustrophobic/flat...Apart from "Exciter" and the superb "Beyond The Realms of Death" it`s not an album i play very often, the cover of Spooky Tooth`s "Better By You,Better Than Me" was a big mistake as with a lot of cover songs they did.
