If people aren’t aware of the story, McMahon was specifically told to ape Ezquerra’s style at first. But he soon went his own way. For me, he’s one of the very best Dredd artists. He has a great eye for composition and movement. Bolland is a fantastic draughtsman but McMahon Dredd always had a lot more energy.

How l miss the good ol days of yhe eighties John wagner, the late great ron smith brian bolland and mike McMahon. Nothing lasts forever but we have great dredd stories and artwork.

I have this and the Bolland book, and will also get the upcoming O’Neill volume. I also hope to see King Carlos, Cam Kennedy and Ron Smith books. And whilst not 2000ad, but the same publisher, Charleys War needs at least one Apex Edition! The artwork is still some of the greatest ever drawn IMHO

Stomm!! That is one gargantuan sized book. Still waiting for 2000AD to start publishing their works in true Omnibus format. I can only dream. Oh, and spotting that Fattie with a box of Otto Sump's FLABB ON! Brilliant.

The next Apex is Kev O’Neill, largely covering his ABC Warriors and Nemesis work. IIRC, a second McMahon is planned, with his gorgeous (and to my mind unsurpassed in that series) Slaine work. It’s hard to say which other Dredd artists should get an edition like this. The other major player in the early days was Ron Smith, who had a great take on the citizens and Dredd himself. How his pages would translate to an artist edition, though, I’ve no idea. Cam Kennedy also had a distinct and visually interesting take on the strip. From the classic era, maybe also Steve Dillon?

I hope Carlos gets a volume, plus Ron and Cam. I’d also pay dearly for a Charleys War book, feature in Battle around the same time as these artists were knocking it out of the park!

@@mymusic2515 oh good grief, yes. Carlos has to have one, ideally with other works like Strontium Dog. I wonder how much of his archive is still with the family though. (I know Kev Gad retrained a lot of his original pages.)

I love the grotesque art of Judge Dredd reminds me of old Games Workshop art. Is there ay way to collect that stuff in collected edition?

There's a lot of trades but the easiest to collect are the Complete Case Files. There's currently 41 volumes and they literally just collect every single Dredd 2000ad or Megazine appearance in order. They tend to contain complete story arcs within so you can just look up and figure out which ones you like with little need to read in order.

@@brianwilkowski9754 And if someone also wants the annual/special stories, they’re all in four volumes dubbed Restricted Files (although one or two of those are tricky to track down these days). You’d also need to add ‘America’ at some point, since that’s not in any of those and is very important to the overall Dreddworld storyline.

If you’re into interesting and varied comics from the same company, see if you can track down and take a look at Best of 2000 AD. That series mixes up a bunch of old and new 2000 AD strips, including a couple of Dredd ones in every trade. They are properly chunky editions. IIRC, #3 just landed, which includes one of my favourite ever 2000 AD series, Leviathan (folks set out on a massive ocean-going liner and end up seemingly lost in the mist for decades) and a truly classic Dredd, Graveyard Shift.

Cool book. Grew up as a 2000AD fan. Growing up in the UK it was my introduction to comics. He is pronounced McMan by the way. Just like Vince from WWE.

Everyone falls in love with Bolland's Dredd on first site, and for some, it arguably takes time to appreciate the less polished styles of the other GREAT Dredd artists. But make no mistake McMahon is just as vital and important as Bolland and Ezquerra when it comes to Dredd :-) x

I love the way McMahon stayed trued to himself over the years, updating his style often. I know his more recent Dredd is extremely divisive, but I think it’s great. So full of energy. Sure, it looks a bit strange - grotesque, even - not least when compared to more realistic artists. But I think it’s superb. I’m still happily convincing myself I don’t need this artist edition, and hoping the temptation will soon be removed permanently! (Seeing the book recently in Forbidden Planet did not help. Fortunately, I couldn’t carry it around all day.)

@@CraigGrannell Elephant in the room: Overall comics have never been mainstream despite brief commercial highs. I love the medium precisely because it is essentially niche and sometimes subversive. 2000AD developed my tastes to the extent that I am turned off by House styles and conformity. My point? There is more to life than the genre of superheroes....there is 2000AD 😁

@@SuperLaughHard Yep. I went in one day with my family and saw them in the sales section and the main featured area. Decided against buying one because money and also because I didn’t want to carry it around all day. And then I found myself in London two weeks later, with TCR being on my route home _and_ the diversion leaving me (just) enough time to catch my train. So I legged it to FP, found there was one remaining copy of the non-signed ones (at 50 quid) and carted it home. My resolve apparently lasted a fortnight, then. Not sure I need all of these. I love Kev’s art, for example, but I’m not bowled over by the selection of his first book. I admire Bolland but he’s not one of my favourites, and so I don’t regret missing out there. But McMahon Sláine will be a must-have, I think. (I do wonder, however, how much thirst there is for these volumes if FP was offloading them. Or perhaps it just bought too many after the Bolland one sold out in about five seconds.)

The colour pages are mostly from Annuals which in the 80's were hardcovers and the artists did their own colouring which is why those pages are coloured. Nice review, it's just a pity you butchered the pronunciation of McMahon's name throughout. McMahon was a grittier artist than Bolland or Gibbons which is probably why he didn't do any work for DC. Artists I'd love to see in this series would be Ron Smith, Carlos Ezquerra, Cam Kennedy, Steve Dillon, Henry Flint
