The driver who hit and killed a mother and her baby on Bayshore Boulevard nearly three years ago will serve 24 years in prison. The judge said Cameron Herrin’s track record of excessive speeding contributed to his decision to give him 24 years.
After the sentencing hearing, the victims’ family says they got justice and they hope this moment will spark some change. They say it’s time for the city to stop street racing culture. They want to make sure no other family loses a loved one to a crash like that again.

What maniac will just keep going like nothing will happen if they run a peson over with their car? Life has priority above all else.

What's funny about this whole situation is that he could've did 6 years and gotten 15 years of probation like the other driver but he rejected it because his dad is well connected in Tampa both in the legal field and with law enforcement. He thought he was going to get away with it which is why he didn't take the plea deal. The extra 18 years was basically for wasting the court's time and it serves him right. It's not like he could dispute that he didn't kill those people due to gross negligence.

It’s good to see a judge who takes his job seriously. You can tell he carefully and thoughtfully weighed the options, the crime, the damage and out serious effort into serving justice and being fair a balanced and took the time to explain his decision in a way that was respectful to the family of the deceased as well as the defendant. He took now joy in handing down the sentence, he didn’t need to stroke his ego and be unnecessarily heavy handed. Sad case, I would hate to have to make decisions like this.

I had good driving fundamentals and knew how to corner and brake a vehicle at its limits. I also drove GoKarts on a regular basis so a lot of the driving skills transferred over from there. But, I had almost zero understanding for the danger and risk I was putting myself and others in. Take it for what it’s worth. They’ll be others here who can relate. Stay safe out there.

Agreed. And as for this kid’s punishment… Honestly I’m sometimes a racist guy, and not shallow (and I’m straight). I don’t feel sympathy for this Arab kid and idc about looks. W/ that said… a girl drunk driver only got *3 years* for killing 2 people. What this kid did had horrible consequences but it wasn’t intentional murder and he wasn’t drinking or doing drugs. 24 years isn’t even close to in line with the charges women would get in the same situation. So it’s unfair/sexist. I personally would’ve sentenced him to 10 to 12 years or something along those lines. Enough to make him never race a car again in his life, but will still allow him the chance to contribute to society when he’s out. 24 years wrecked this kid’s whole life. I can’t help but think the judge was jealous or angry about the kids looks, or maybe the judge thought “I’m not giving him a pass on his looks so I’ll give him a harsh punishment”. 10 to 12 years would’ve made him a mature and changed 30 year old when he gets out. Now, he won’t get out until he’s 42 years old and his entire life will be ruined. At age 42 it’s too late to learn a skill or start a career. To me, that might be justice, yes, for the victim, but I still don’t know if it’s the right decision for society as a whole. And it certainly will increase his likelihood of crime when he eventually gets out. If he got out at 30, he’d learn his lesson but wouldn’t have lost ALL hope- he would at least be able to learn a skill. Maybe construction, maybe accounting, maybe sales, maybe computer science. But at age 42, he has no choice but to continue a life of crime and delinquency. 42 is too late to start a life. At 42 the brain has pretty much stopped being able to learn new information or make new habits. This kid never intended to hurt anyone, 18 year old kid’s brains don’t fully understand consequences yet. Their brain isn’t fully formed yet, it’s biology. Again if he had intentionally killed someone, yes, lock him up forever and throw away the damn key. But this kid made a VERY Stupid/bad decision BUT he never intended to harm anyone. It probably didn’t even occur to him he would crash. He was a stupid kid who made a really stupid decision. I don’t even know the kid but I recommend he appeal it immediately, and also immediately get a better lawyer. If he has parents hopefully they get him a better lawyer.

Besides all your racism blah blah... I totally agree with you. Personally I think 5 years plus 20 years probation would be a good consequence. The probation to make sure he stays off drugs/alcohol. To make sure he stays on the right path and give him a chance to be a normal adult. I watched his moms testimony... He has PTSD and a lot of remorse. When I was18 I made a stupid mistake that cost my parents $119,000. I'm 36 now and can't imagine still paying the consequences today.

The meaning of life is our relationship with God. These four steps are the key to getting a Divine Revelation directly from him. They are something you'd eventually do if you took God seriously enough to read the Bible, while implementing its teachings. They are, forgive your parents, break down before Jesus, ask for forgiveness, and read three books of the Bible. Step four requires the first book of each testament, and one you chose yourself. The order is actually important. The steps build on each other. Each one primes your soul for the next. To be forgiven we must forgive. Mathew 6: 14-15. That's why forgiving others has to come before asking for forgiveness. Jesus will not forgive you until you've at least done the bare minimum, our parents. They're supposed to be easiest to forgive, because they've fed, housed, loved us to some degree. Our problems with them are supposed to represent our problems with God. This is why the bare minimum to receive the revelation is our parents. You'll still have to forgive everyone though, but that comes much easier after meeting God. I'm extremely serious and very literal. I'm not talking about signs, nor feelings, nor prayer. It's an actual literal pulled out of your body direct one on one conversation, nothing you can miss. nor misinterpretae. The vast majority of christans never bother to do what God wants seriously, so most never get this revelation. To most outside church their Bible is a paper weight, or at best a virtue signal. Their religion is in what other people think about them, not their relationship with God. Please do those steps I mentioned, there really is a Divine Revelation waiting for all of us. There's extraordinarlly important information we all desperately need in this revelation, but those who get it are forbidden to share it. The Truth that Jesus Christ is Lord is written on every human heart. We all have that knowledge inside us, but we bury it under mountains of pain and anger. Those steps clear away that garbage inside you, letting God heal you, so that his words boom clearly inside your soul. The entire point of our existence here is to Trust God enough that we pay him this mustard seed of Faith, so his Grace can remove the stain sin has left on our souls. Everyone that does not get this Grace is not forgiven of any of their sins, even if they turned around and we're the best person from 25 to death. Without Grace those first sins are still counted against you, tying you to the devil's punishment. It's not about being a good person, It's about being forgiven for when you weren't. The Bible is Truth. Please do those steps and see for yourself. Please take your salvation seriously,

Destroying his life wont bring them back, but what kind of life do you deserve once you taken someone elses life away a mother and a baby that had its whole life ahead of it.. I know he didn't mean to kill anyone, but he did mean to speed and if you speed like that all the time with no regard for the law or other peoples safety, its only a matter of time before you kill a person.

@@mdstate829 Its punishment for something he did wrong yes, How did you come up with 10 years over 24. Why is 10 years a good punishment and 24 too much. By your logic he shouldnt serve time at all. Take his drivers license away and hope he learned a lesson. And if thats what you believe thats what you believe, that's your opinion about the prison system. But to me its not about learning a lesson, its about facing the consequences of your actions. 24 years is the mid range sentence. Me saying he deserves a long sentence is not the same as saying just kill him. Its an exaggeration you made because you want to make a point that 24 years is too extreme while 10 years is the somehow the magical number. Why is 10 enough punishment. I never said he deserves to spend his whole life in jail, but his crime was severe with severe consequences and so the punishment should be severe with severe consequences. And I get what you are saying whats the point of that, but to me what he did was really wrong. It would be different if he was driving the speed limit and she just walked out in front of him, then its an accident, then its not his fault and Id have sympathy heck even if he was speeding but it was only 10 over. I would feel bad for him. 108 is horrific. He is lucky to be alive himself. 24 years is extreme but what he did was extreme. When you take a life thats it. Its the worst thing you can do. Is he a continuous threat to society, hopefully not, but you cant just kill a person and go whoops my bad guys Ill take the bus now, sorry. And maybe its a bad system for punishment but until we come up with something better this is what we got.

Death penalty is too easy, if you kill a murdered you won't solve anything, but keeping him alive, putting him at hard work, harsh conditions, miserable life, would be like he is in hell which is much better option. The body of a murderer is also a prison, if you kill him is like releasing him from a prison, that's why I don't agree with you, but I can see why you would want that, a life for a life, but I would like for him to get life in prison, or at least 30 years, since he destroyed 2 lifes and ruined the fathers life. A ruined life for a ruined life. ( I know this is what happened in medieval times, but it was more effective if you ask me)
