I had to sue my last landlord to get my security deposit. I won easily. Took me a year to collect it, but I was like a pitbull. I wasn't gonna let it go. He ignored me until he went to remortgage his house and there was a lien against him. Got my deposit plus interest then! He actually was an awesome landlord until it came to having to let go of that damn deposit.

Yeah Im sure that's exactly it. I used to rent out a spare room in my house and Id ask them to give me a seperate money order just for the deposit. So I wouldn't cash it until the very end (making sure there's not a exp date or anything) when it was time to return it or use it. Cause I knew that it was way too easy to spend it and then end up screwed when they'd move out

5,100 dollar security deposit???? And the landlord wanted to keep all of it mostly for things like a little dust here and there and grease in the oven? I can see why the co-plaintiffs didn't receive the full refund back due to burning a few small holes in the floor from the hookah, but that was about the extent of the damage done. Much of the other was the landlord trying to squeeze them for their money that didn't belong to him. He's a nightmare landlord.

When I was aprox 4 - 12 my single mom moved around a lot, and she was able to get all of her security deposits back (at least in large part). Our first landlords were lovely and even gifted my mom a carpet cleaner. We're in small-city/big-town Canada, so perhaps the difference is in location and building types?

I admit that $5,100 is a large security deposit, but a lot of residents don’t leave rental units in good shape. Pet deposits are not usually refundable. It should be called a “fee”. Judge Faith sides most of the time with the tenants.

He is a bad payer and very bad owner. He should know that the deposit is kept in an account until the departure of his tenants.
