Is, actually most accounts you can tell he is smarter just by his characteristics, he is extremely curious and doesn't really only seek to manipulate people while Johan only seeks one thing. (He is also emotionally smarter, yes while being calm and reserved is Johan's thing, that would not give him a more intimidating status unlike Holden and his very sadistic happy nature.) Seriously, research actually shows that sadistic happy people who always manage to be optimistic either seem like idiots to others or unstoppable forces of nature. (And Holden is no Idiot I'll just say that.)
