The Scottish Government is planning a radical shake-up of our justice system. It includes the scrapping of the unique Not Proven verdict, and a reduction in the number of jurors in criminal trials from 15 to 12.
Perhaps the most contentious plan is to pilot the remova of jurors in trials of rape and attempted rape. It’s an attempt to lessen perceived bias and improve conviction rates, but many lawyers and some judges fear that trials without juries would be inherently unjust.
Scotland Tonight reporter Selena Jackson has been gauging opinions, including that of a rape survivor with first-hand experience of our justice system.
