@geoffpoole4833 жыл бұрын
What if an innocent person is executed? Can't bring them back. The presence of the death penalty hasn't reduced America's high crime rate has it? If you're so keen on the death penalty you're no doubt prepared to execute a member of your own family if they were convicted of a capital crime? Most civilised countries have abolished the death penalty.
@billmatthews24633 жыл бұрын
@@geoffpoole483 Most civilized countries? That's open for discussion. Most Muslim countries think THEY'RE civilized. However, to address your first part, it IS unfortunate that sometimes an innocent person is executed. Even if they are falsely convicted and put in prison without being executed it is still unfortunate. But think about the opposite. Look at how many murderers are set free only to commit even more murders. There's a lot. Think of all the lives that would have been saved if the death penalty was carried out the first time they committed murder. To use your illustration, how would YOU feel if a close family member or friend were murdered? Then the murderer were set free on some technicality, or paroled?

@@xP0STx So "life without parole" doesn't actually mean that? I know that convicts sentenced to life get out, but that's because they're paroled.
@rorylapidus57724 жыл бұрын
@@charlesvan13 I know a gang member who killed a cop in Oceanside California when he was around 16. He was given life without the possibility of parole, and tried as an adult. However in 2010, (maybe before 2010), his case was being appealed because he was under 18 at the time of the offense. I think it had something to do with the state supreme court ruling that children couldn't be given life without the possibility of parole, or something to that effect. I lost touch with him and didn't follow his case but many times this type of thing happens where a person could be given a revised sentence due to state or federal supreme court rulings, or various law changes, or even cases where inmates are granted pardons. It's rare, but can happen. Also keep in mind many people who are given life sentences with the possibility of parole never get out. If family members of the victim(s) show up and give impact statements the defendant has a major long shot at being granted parole. It happens but not that commonly. Life sentences often are life sentences. One thing I have seen judges do is given multiple 100+ year sentences, so unless they are pardoned they will never be released. It is a more effective sentence in many states to keep people locked up forever.

It's actually simple the answer to your question, it costs more to execute somebody as it should. At the end of the day capital punishment is not the answer it does not bring the victim back, it's very core the capital punishment law is a hypocrisy as two wrongs do not make a right and the record of innocent people being executed is too great to be ignored one innocent life is with more than all of the guilty put together, when you complain about China executing people or Iran executing people if your own country is executing people you cannot speak people in Glass Houses should not throw stones. Your supermax prisons wear these monsters are locked down 24 hours a day there's a hell hole you would not want to be put into and the appropriate place to incarcerate these monsters for all time let them sit and stew in their own juices killing is too good for them.

You got that right. That judge was throwing volumes at this fool. And that's after consolidating a lot of counts. We could have been in for a very long session. This is something that a defense team has to be prepared for when they request a non-jury, bench, trial. I'm not sure, but I think that's what happened here. I mean, suspending the criminal's driver's license. Who else would have thought of that? On a life sentence? Guess he won't be able to drive a forklift through the prison gates without adding 10-20 years to his sentence.

Yeah, but now he won't be able to drive a car if he somehow manages to break out of prison and carjack someone. He'll remember that his license is suspended, and he'll be forced to bicycle-jack someone instead, which'll make it easier for police cars to catch up with him on the road! 😁👍

The purpose of all that is in the eventuality of one or more sentences being overturned on appeal. For example, if the life sentence is overturned on appeal, all the others (including that driving ban) will still apply.

Yes, they are literally "your judge." And they are entrusted with enormous power. They are basically untouchable at work, as long as they don't violate any of the rules. Of course, they get speeding tickets like everyone, though it's extremely rare that they commit major crimes. A judge who gets a DUI for example will no longer be a judge.
